32 gun frigate WIP

Ahoy, mateys!

Bava´s 3D shipyard proudly presents the Boston, a 26 ( <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> ) gun frigate, built in the 1740s in New England. The model is based on historical draughts and I give my best to recreate her as accurate as possible, but I already had to make some changes due to "aesthetic" reasons and due to my rather limited modeling capabilities (its my first serious project).

This post will be updated regularly, so you can keep track of the progress without reading the whole thread.

Current polycount is 29400 tris.

(the cannons are just placeholders)

Oh, and I´m searching for a new name for the ship, Boston sounds a bit ... well, boring. Something with a greek touch would be nice (e.g. Achille, Archilles, The Corinthian etc.), so if you have a good suggestion, please let me know.

Thread moved. Nice work! As for the triangulation: To solve that, you should apply smoothing groups.

A real beuy she is. No doubt will replace the surprise as my flagship <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Thanks, guys <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

@Pieter: already tried smoothing groups , and it does indeed look <i>much</i> better but I have no idea how well it´d work with
the storm engine. I wanted to give the stern an complete overhaul anyway, so I hope the next version will be more "triangulation compatible". Failing that, I´ll convert some the faces into triangles manually.
But thanks for the suggestion <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

My to do list for the next weeks:

-redo the stern
-finish the cabin
-model the liveboat
-add anchors, some ropes, steering wheel and other details
-finally start working on my "change that" list (3 pages and still growing *sigh*)

Regards,
Bava

The Storm engine supports smoothing groups just fine, I can assure you. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

&%%&!!! A round stern. Why does my ship happen to have a round stern ... ARGGGGGH

Anyway, I completly redid the lower part of the hull, I hope its a bit better now (with smoothing groups this time)

<img src="http://img34.picoodle.com/img/img34/4/2/1/f_tuckm_525e83d.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

what da ya fink , mateys? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ninja" border="0" alt="ph34r.gif" />

nice, very NICE!! i love that ship.. I just hope that the canons will work, (it's a new model) i don't know if the game wil know where the cannons are.. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

hope it wil work !

I think you should take OR kazeites cannons OR stock cannons, so that you don't get too much polygons with too detailed cannons.

PS

VERY VERY NICE frigate, that is how a frigate should be.

Ah! Looks much better with the smoothing groups! Nicely done!
To Chris: Making the cannons fire properly just requires some locator editing. It's a lot of work, but doable and not too complicated.

could this turn into a contest between bava and chris as to who can make the best ship? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

I added a separate mesh and ran a script so that the decks don´t have intersecting faces with the hull.

how did you make the rail that thick?? sory i ask but just want to know a bit more.. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

//and how do i make the nurbs to polys?

No prop, matey. I simply duplicated the hull and then bridged the two pieces. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And I have <i>absolutely</i> no idea how to convert NURBS into a mesh in 3D Max, sorry.

Time for a little update again, finally finished the stern, its still a WIP, though. But before I´ll continue working on it , I want to hear your opinion, mateys. Shape ok? Any ideas on how it could be improved? Tell me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<!--QuoteBegin-Chris Roupé+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Chris Roupé)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->do you know how to, in blender?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Yup, ALT +C in option mode IIRC, but it looks like you already solved your problem <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<!--QuoteBegin-Merciless Mark+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Merciless Mark)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->hope your going to use proper cannon models and not the default PoTC crap cannons<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I have no idea which cannons I´m going to use, but I´ll probably try to make one myself.

<!--QuoteBegin-Pieter Boelen+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Pieter Boelen)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Ah! Looks much better with the smoothing groups! Nicely done!<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Thanks <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />. Good to know the storm engine supports smoothing groups, I´d be in deep trouble otherwise. ^^

Bava
