A few questions

First, kudos to the people who have kept mod'ing this game and keeping it alive for us pirate fans. Nice Job.

I haven't played since around last november or something like that and now I'm playing with the Build 14-6 installed (can't get Build 14-7 to work) and I have a few questions that I'm not sure were answered the last time I asked a while back...

1. Smugglers on some islands don't exist even though the trade book says that island has contraband it wants. Somene said trying the trick where I ask the crew to come ashore with me and it triggers a lot of npc's to spawn and one of them SOMEWHERE will be a smuggler. I've tried this in the past and I tried it again and no luck. Colonies like St.John's have a lot of contraband they want but I can't find a smuggler on the island. Anyone know where or if these newer islands have smugglers?

2. Is it true that after a while the other nations learn to recognize your ship so raising a false flag stops working after a while and that replacing the ships in your fleet is the only way to throw them off until they learn to recognize your ship again? Someone told me this a while back and it seemed to work. I have the problem where after a while of smuggling in goods to a colony the navy eventually just fires on me know matter what flag I raise. This plan of replacing the ships sounds like a logical idea.

3. Build 14 and its new xp and stats... I'm a bit confused on this. In the older builds when you gained a level you would distribute your abilities and you skills and now it seems that you can only distribute ability points and that skills are % based now. How do I gain xp in areas like leadership, commerce, luck etc and now to I get these skills up in levels?

4. Buying pirate ships. I created my player to be a pirate and when I'm in the pirate town on Quebradas it says I can't buy certain ships from the shipyard becuase they are pirate designs. How do I go about purchasing these ships?

5. Radar is missing. When in battle my radar is missing so I don't know which way the wind is blowing or how long before my cannons are ready to fire again. I have it set to realistic sailing like I always do and the new looking radar and i have the on screen thing checked too. Is it just gone or is it a bug?

Thanks.

1: for as far as i know, smugglers excist on all islands. they're always in the tavern in my experience. or do you mean the beach?

2: if your reputation with that nation is low enough or you're famous enough with a nation hostile to the nation that YOU are hostile with you'll be recognized all the same. that should be it. a message should appear in the top left when you enter an island if you're recognized.

3: leadership and luck: quests (of any kind) and talking to people) same for luck, except that you can also gain luck through tavern games. (be sure to check out blackjack and poker)

cannon skill: firing and hitting a target.

accuracy: shooting your pistol (i personally think that this should also increase when fireing cannons)

melee: fighting

defence: getting hit

commerce: trading/escort missions and trading.

repair: generally repairing, even in shipyards.

sailing: mainly storms, but defeating enemy ships as well.

boarding: defeating enemy ships by boarding.

4: i'm not sure, but i think that you have to join the pirates by talking to the QC leader. be sure to have a high enough notiority. (see this is the relations menu) and as this question is bound to pop up: to get your relation with the pirates positive, choose 'hoist flag' (the jolly roger) when at sea when pirate ships are near. any other nation will become hostile to you when you do this. if you leave the 3D sea, your old flag is re-selected.

5: buy a compass and equip it. in fact, it would be a good idea to buy all navigational instruments and equip them.

thanks. This helps alot. I found the thing about the compas while looking at one of the buildsettings files. Now I just need to find a place to buy a compas lol.

To clarify question 1 though, I go to the taverns of the newer towns and there isn't a smuggler in some of them. The original towns all seem to have a smuggler though. Well back to pillaging.. thanks again

santiago does have one, for as far as i've seen. i'll check if you're right.

a store would be your best bet. note: a cheap compass doesn't show any land or ships. a regular compass does.

Let me see if I understand your stement about pirate reputation. If I'm sailing along and see pirates i need to go to my character screen and under relations hoist the J.R.? So if I'm sailing from island to island on the overhead ocean view and see a pirate ship and i'm NOT flying the jolly roger should i enage them and THEN hoist the flag so they know I'm a pirate? Normally when sailing around I fly the jolly roger unless I'm trying to sneak into a port. If I'm already flying the jolly roger should I "enage" the pirates i find on the overhead sea map so they see my Jolly Roger is hoisted? Also what about if I see pirtaes engaged in a battle, does it help my rep with them If I join the battle to help them? I normally always do since the more ships the better.

So far in my games I'm can't get my pirate rep up at all.

the pirate flag in the relations menu and the jolly roger are two different flags. you need to select 'hoist flag' in the mini-menu where you can select ammo, abilities and other things. hoist flag should be at the end of that list.

important: if your ship catches fire, press c to execute a firedrill. all hands will be ordered to douse the fire, the sails will be furled, and the cannons jettisoned to avoid them exploding. yes, they DO explode if you keep the fire untended. in fact, if the fire keeps on going long enough, it will reach the powder room and your ship will explode. i've seen it happen twice with my enemies. c is also the hotkey for using a potion.

I forgot about that hoist the jolly roger thing in the mini menu. thanks.

The second thing is actually pretty funny I didn't realize the cannons could explode, that really cool. I remember back when i used to play sea dogs and ships would catch fire then explode with a message about the powder room, I always thought it was pretty cool

i had a really spectacular case with that once. a pinnace of war was on fire, and apparantly it was a really big fire, as cannons kept exploding all over the place. while it was sinking due to the heavy damage, the powder room exploded as well.

1. Apparently them smugglers STILL haven't been added. They should be added. If only we had somebody to do it. Most likely, it isn't even that hard to do.

2. Other nations indeed do learn to recognize you, but this is based on your fame. I don't think changing your ship has anything to do with that, but I agree that WOULD be a good idea. But only if you change all ships in your fleet. I think you should submit that suggestion to Pirate_KK.

3. I know I wrote up a list of that, but now I cannot find it and I don't have the time to refind it nor to rewrite it. Ask Pirate_KK or somebody else.

4. You don't just need to be a pirate; you need to be a PIRATE. A well-known pirate, that is. You need to increase your fame. If you don't play as a pirate, you need a certain fame to be able to join the pirates. If you are a pirate, you need the same amount of fame.

5. It is gone because now you need to have a compass equipped for the compass display to appear. You can buy compasses from the merchants. If you don't like this mod, turn ONSEA_COMPASS to 1 in BuildSettings.h. In Alpha 7 it has been made so that you always see your cannon status even if you have no compass.

What kind of fame are we talking about, good or bad if I always play as a pirate? To increase pirate fame do i basically need to be as bad as bad can be while not offending pirates? I'm still an unknown freeboter/nuetral. I'm hoping to be terror of the high seas soon.

I don't worry about fame with the nations as I'm always stealing from them. I do rescue maidens from the rape gangs in the jungle and i give money to beggers from time to time and the churches when i can. But overall I just like being a scallywag

eh... terror of the high seas is BAD. really bad. you really don't want that to happen, although it does make things more interesting, as you can only buy goods at pirate islands with such a bad reputation.

what pieter means is your notiority, which i already explained to you. your notiority is at the moment 'unknown freebooter'. i already told you how to increase it. you need to have a notiority of 'pirate' to join the pirates. being with the pirates doesn't have any benefits though.
