A game looking like those funny Pirates battles?

Izu uzI

Landlubber
Hi guys!

I just finished Pirates! (everything done) as a Gouvernor with 116 rewards points and around 800000 bucks, and one of the greatest thing I liked to do was to invade cities. I simply invaded every ones of them, included the two only accessible by feet. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I got really addicted to those little battles between Pirates and guards, where we're waiting our turn to make some tactical moves and take down the enemy, even with a smaller army. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

So I was wondering if somebody simply knows a game just like this and only this part of Pirates. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Thanks in advance, and sorry if my english looks weird. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> matey! Nice job with the retirement!

I really like that part too, except there are 3 landlocked cities. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
And Sid Meier, the brain behind Pirates, has a couple of American Civil `War-themed` games around, such as Gettysburg and (I think) Antietam. However, those aren't really `turn-based`, everything moves at the same time.

I'm sure there are other `turn-based` war games out there though, and at least one member of this intelligent forum (aside from skull, too busy enjoying his rum to be of much help, sorry 'bout that one there, skull <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> ) can name you a game.

Hi Izu <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

This is probably already known to you but civilization (I, II or III) looks very much like the landbattles of Pirates.

Yeah. I enjoy the land battles, and it was pretty easy to understand how they work because I played so much Civ.

So, if you haven't played Civ 3 yet, I would say that's what you are looking for.

Thanks guys for your fast answers. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Yeah of course I know the Sid Meier's Civilization series! I played the third some years ago, and as weird as it could seem, I didn't keep a good feeling about it. Well, maybe I should give it another try, cause maybe I was too young to appreciate it like I could now...

In fact I'm a `Doom-Like` lover, I really dunno why I suddenly fall in love for such a game, lol <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Anyway, I'm gonna retry Civilization 3 right now, and I'll stay tunned about any other game than someone could mention here. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Thanks again!

Yes you're right, I forgot Puerto Principe. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Harrrr! did someone mention rum <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Some of us think better with a mug of rum in our paws and one sliding down our gullet... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Ahhhhem... More rum here, please! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" /> Thank you! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

Koei games used to make games like a `turn-base` war. that was way way back then <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> i havent played pirates yet, im reserving my energy for this game after i finish HL2 <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Well, I could name several, but I am afraid they might be, uh.. too much war oriented. I am not sure if its the turn based gaming you like or the little animations moving around the field. If you could clarify that particular detail I may be able to offer some on track suggestions.. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

(NOTE: The reason I ask this is, some of the War Games I play can take as much as 6 months to finish. I am more of an armchair General than a Pirate I am afraid.) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Sure I like the way armies are moving / fighting, but those animations aren't the main purpose I'm looking for. This is more the tactical part of it, the "`chess-like`" thing in fact. I mean, each unit got its pros and its cons, so you should place and use them in the proper way to win. I know Pirates! is probably very basic compared to most of the games based on this mechanic, but it's exactly what I'm looking for since Pirates's `Land-Battles` are way too simple for me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Anyway, as weird as it could seem, I almost dislike `Risk-Like` games.

I hope my needs are clear now, lol <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

There are a LOT of those `turn-based`" tactical/strategy games out there - they are built off of the old style way of wargaming on a board with dice (anyone here remember that besides me? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> LOL!) instead of electronically with a computer. What era are you hoping to play?

Always enjoyed de board game O' risk,spent many hours play'n that game,never tried de PC game version <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Well, the turn based game I am playing now.. and have been off and on since 1992 is Pacific War. It’s a classic turn based grand strategy game. Which means it has more substance than graphical `gee-whiz`? But, its a completely free download these days and updated to run on windows at;

<a href="http://www.matrixgames.com/Games/PacificWar/faq.asp" target="_blank">http://www.matrixgames.com/Games/PacificWar/faq.asp</a>

Another game you might want to look into, since it is current, just released on Jan 4 is:

<a href="http://www.paradoxplaza.com/heartsofiron2.asp" target="_blank">http://www.paradoxplaza.com/heartsofiron2.asp</a>

There are also many non `turn-based` games that are war oriented, I would call your attention to the Total War series, the most current being, Rome: Total War;

<a href="http://www.totalwar.com/" target="_blank">http://www.totalwar.com/</a>

Another great "war" game is reviewed here..This can be very challenging. Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots (this is an expansion to Rise of Nations)

<a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/riseofnationsthrone/index.html?q=" target="_blank">http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/riseof...e/index.html?q=</a>

If you like detailed resource management with your fighting, try this..
Stronghold, 4 years old, but still fun and can be very challenging reviewed here;

<a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/stronghold/index.html?q=stronghold" target="_blank">http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/strong...ml?q=stronghold</a>

I could go on for quite sometime being almost 40 and having gamed for 30 years. :p

I tried to give you a cross section of games, some are the opposite spectrum from the others. For example Pacific War, is all about substance and game play, while Rome: Total War, looks so good they even have a TV show on the history that uses the games engine to depict ancient battles.

Thank you GIJoe!!!

Yes I already played Rise Of Nations & Rome - Total War, I liked both of them quiet well. Stronghold sounds familiar to my ears, but I think I didn't try it yet. I'm gonna try the two other ones you mentioned, Pacific War (so old, I guess I will find it on an Abandon Games site easily), and Hearts Of Iron 2.

The link I posted up in that last post is the ACTUAL company link for the game Pacifc War. The maker of the game has made it a free download, It is not abandonware. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hearts of Iron 2 is Very New. As a matter of fact, there has just been a patch released to balance some stuff. You can find patch around that website posted above if you purchase the game <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Have fun, with Pacific War, please know it can be daunting, but do not give up. Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned <b>RISK</b> the classic strategy tabletop wargame, invented by the Parker brothers in 1959 and it's still going strong.

I actually bought an up to date version last week. On Firday night (just gone) I went around to a friends house, and 3 of us played RISK with a few beers. The game lasted over 5 hours (we played world conquest RISK).
It's a nice slow paced, thinking game, that's not to heavy on the technicalities. It's easy to learn and as I said earlier, it's great with friends and a few beers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

There are computer versions of RISK available. If you look on the net, you'll find free versions or the superior 'pay4' versions.

Actually, a couple of peopel DID mention Risk :p

One said he `dis-likes` it (original poster)

The other said he likes it, but has yet to play the computer version.

Shoot, for that matter, we could even include the original Battle Chess or one of the many `follow-ups`. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Those animations were great for their day. Added new meaning to, Queen takes bishop. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

And actually again, yes I said I dislike Risk, but I was only speaking about the computer version! (<a href="http://pc.ign.com/objects/013/013205.html" target="_blank">Risk 2</a>)

Of course I like the `old-style` Risk tabletop wargame, with couple of friends and beers...!

The computer version got a bad AI and needs some more polish. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Anyway, it could be funny in multiplayer mode, but that's not what I'm looking for. But there is a demo available to download, you should make your own opinion by trying it.

My bad...

I only read the initial post and then the following 9 replies before I decided to post <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Still, <b>RISK</b> (the tabletop game) is a great game aint it?
