A question

chosen man

Landlubber
If, while sailng in glorious 3d, I sail in no particular direction away from the nearest island will I encounter any ships, you know if I sail in real time so to speak? I understand that ship encounters are portrayed on the world map and its up to me if I go ahead and engage, but If I sail for long enough, time-shift or not, is there the chance of an encounter in the 3d map?

thanks in advance

No. Apart from ships generated close to islands when leaving port or coming in from Map Mode, you won't encounter any other ships if you set out to sea in Sea Mode, no matter how far away you sail from the island. Encounters out to sea are generated whilst in Map Mode.

Hope this helps.

I thought as much. It occured to me the other night to pose the question to you guys. Thanks for the quick reply. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

No worries, matey.

It's a nice thought, to be able to sail out to sea in real time and encounter sails on the horizon, but the game engine doesn't handle it that way.

There was a thread a few months ago where someone (Captain Dan from Hungary) tried to sail to an Island in 3D. His findings were interesting:

It might answer a few more questions.

I once tried to sail between two fairly close islands (Redmond and Hispaniola?) without going to the world map. I knew about how long I'd have to sail, so I just sailed in real time for about 5 hours of game time, or one hour real time.

About the time I expected to see the new island, I saw the *bottom* of the island in the water, but nothing above it. I encountered no ships along the way, of course. When I went to the world map, I was right next to the new island, and immediately got the "Land ho!" message.

The game thought I was still in the general location of the old island, as I could still see it for a long time and could still get ranges with the spyglass. There was *something* where the new island was supposed to be, but it wasn't a complete island. Once I'd gone to the world map, it updated, with my correct position, and I was at the new island when I left the world map.

It would be nice if the game would generate random encounters in a situation like this, or switch locations when you're closer to another island. I don't know if it's possible to make the game do this. Five hours of game time beats several days on the world map. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
