Way back when, in the legendary forum for Cutthroats: Terror on the High Seas, several guys began making references to Pirates! using a standard abbreviation:

Pirates! Gold was, logically:
>>>P!G<<<
It seemed to make sense at the time.
This abbreviation became the standard. I have even seen it in published game magazines. I thoroughly believe it all started on that hugely successful forum for that marginally successful game. But I think I have a better abbreviation....
You see, it's a real pain in the butt to shift and then reach your finger all the way up to that exclamation point to type "!". Abbreviations are supposed to make for easier typing. What if, instead, we started a revolution and abbreviated Sid Meier's Pirates! as:
>>>SMP<<<
If anyone ever wanted to distinguish between the original Pirates!, Pirates! Gold and the new Pirates!, they could simply do it this way:
>>>SMP, SMPG, SMP2<<<
Otherwise, a simple little SMP would be understood as the NEW Pirates! Readers might have to use good judgement in very rare circumstances, but most of the time the context of the post/article would make the version clear to everyone.

The best part is when writing about Pirates! Gold no one will mistakenly think you are expressing your views on pigs. Flawless in every respect! So, if everyone is in agreement, feel free to begin using the new system.
