A SOLUTION TO CRASHING PROBLEMS!

No, I am not going to tell you craps like closing your background programs or upgrading your video card, I am telling you a solution that works for me.

It might work for you too.

This is what you can do: turn the WORLD and OBJECT details ALL THE WAY UP, and run the game.

If it still crashes, try turning ALL the graphic options to their maximum, and run the game.

Again, if it still crashes, try different combination of WORLD and OBJECTS graphic levels, and run the game.

PLZ tell me if my method works for you or not, I am always happy to see that I've helped someone. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I tried that before and it does work...for awhile. The crashes still happens. The only cure for the crashes that i know that works 100% for me was when i reverted my video card driver to an older version. i use an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro so im not sure whether it will work on other 3d cards or not. But give it a try.

NobleJms, this solution has been talked about on a couple of other threads and seems to work for a number of people. I wish I knew why this seemed to alleviate crashing, doesn't make much sense to me at this point. Come to think of it, I wish this solution worked for me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Unfortunately, there seems to be a deeper issue for a certain subset of users, presumably using Mobile RADEON cards...although that has yet to be determined. Just out of curiosity, what video card were you initially having this trouble with?

this solution only works fork people with intel graphics cards <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

NobleJms, why did you make 2 threads? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Amazingly, the tip by NobleJms worked for me! I have an Intel graphics card and the Pirates game was crashing after less than 5 minutes of playing. When I turned the object and world detail up as high as it would go, the crashes stopped and I could finally play the game! THANKS!

(Now if I could just get my character to appear "`non-metallic`"....)

Yarr, I have a dell d500 (Centrino 1.3 512MB RAM) which has an intel extreme graphics 2 (82852/82855 GM/GME) card. I'm pretty confident this card doesn't support hardware T&L (Intel says so).

I experienced the crash phenomenon too, but tried this suggestion which fixed the crashing problem.

I played last night for about 6 hours without a crash. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Of course the game is now rather jerky at times, but generally very playable.

Another issue is that occasionally a model's texture will fail to load and that model will render as a gold reflection object. (the models for the player character and the `sign-up` officer for the dutch pretty much never load)

All in all not perfect, but I have been able to play and am quite enjoying it. I have also experienced some joy turning down certain graphics options.

Yarr, give it a try, your mileage may vary.

Seems to have worked for me. Only 1 crash in about `3-4` hours of play total (3 different sessions). 5600fx Nvidia card. Before that I couldn't play for more than 5 minutes. I only turned up the world and objects to max. Left the rez at 1024 x 768. ***Thank You!***

Does it work also with intel graphic card with shared memory????

I have an Intel card in a Dell PC and I have struggled with the crashing issues as well as the metallic characters (more like playing Terminator 4: The Pirates Era). Has anybody a solution to this or is this something that has been otherwise acknowledged as a known issue that we could reasonably expect a patch for in the not too distant future? Alternatively, any suggestion for what cards work well with SMP?http://forum.piratesahoy.net/images/smiles/bookish.gif

I've tried this solution, it helps to a degree. Before I changed my video preferences it crashed at sea right after I chose the country to work for, now it crashes at sea when I reach a certain distance form the port.

I chose England as my country and when I started sailing towards Santiago, as soon as I reach the end of the coastline it closes/crashes without any warning.

The Graphics card I'm using is an "S3 Graphics ProSavage" I've tried upgrading it's drivers but each time I do I get some message about it not being able to support `MS-DOS` or something.

NEWSFLASH!! After reading suggestions for several days and trying all the combinations of ideas, I have found one that permanently works. It seems fairly obvious, but is an unfortunate fix.

I downgraded my video drivers for my GeForce FX5600 from the latest leaked Forceware 75.90 to the official 71.81 release. No dice. Still crashing no matter starting in safe mode, altering settings, etc.

I downgraded WAAAAY back, as one post suggested, to version 61.77 and voila! Everything worked! I could choose any setting and any resolution and it's rock stable.

So obviously there is some conflict between any of the card makers' latest driver implementations and how this game uses them. Clearly, a problem with the game, not the drivers, because the latest drivers work great on all my other games.

PS. The obvious drawback is that the older driver has problems with new games like Star Wars Nights of the Replublic 2, etc., so beware when rolling back. You may want to switch back and forth between your drivers when playing different games. Suck!

Aye, rkorkie! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Fred Bob backed off his driver tew v65.73 and got him success wid an nVidia Quadro FX 500! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> A later version had caused "crashes" in de dance sequences! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> Fred Bob be sayin' "crashes" cause sometimes de game disappeared but had only minimized tew de Task Bar! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Update: I've been trying newer drivers than 61.77. I'm up to 67.66 and it is pretty stable. I even noticed some visual improvements like boat reflection in the water.

I'll keep trying newer drivers until the crashes start to happen again.

Moral of the story: depending on which Nvidia card you have, you will likely find stability with older drivers. Just start working your way backwards. You can pretty much find all the drivers you need on 3dguru.com. Hope that helps!

How about we don't? And instead demand a patch from Firaxis that addresses these issues?

I paid $55 for this game, why the hell should I have to rollback my video drivers to accomodate this game, when that should be Firaxis' job. If everything works fine with every other game on my computer, I have a right to expect Pirates should work as well. There is no excuse.

help

ok but how to turn the settings when you cant get in the game?
I got Intel 82852/82855 graphics controller that dont support T&L
So what Im supposed to do?
please help
I realy want to play this game as I once loved the old "Pirates!"

I understand what both of you guys are saying, however, given that you are not in a position to make demands from Firaxis, it's probably best not to play the victim. There are some suggestions to get around your problem, and if you don't want to do it, then that is up to you. If your video card is not on the supported list, then the onus is on you to know that before buying the game. With the advances in video cards and video games, manufacturers are not obliged to make games that are all things to everyone. Hope you understand (don't mean to sound tough, just realistic).

Good point thar, rkorkie! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Sooner or later (prolly later <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> ) a patch might appear dat heps some o' de video issues! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> But in de meantime (like right now <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> ) we gotta work wid what we got! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Aye mates, thar be to many variables pending on yer computer specs te blame it all on de Game.Rule O' thumb wid Nvidia drivers are designed fer de card ye have.IE 56.+ fer 5600 + cards,61.+ 6600+ cards,so ye take yer chances on wether they werk wid yer game or not.I'd be use'n 66.93 on a GF3 Tutanium500 card for both POTC and SMP at 1600 x 1200 resoluton with success <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
