about sidestepping/strafing

it looks to me, as if sidestepping works the way it does now, because there are no animations for the sidestep, and no collision checking routines while sidestepping. or something.

so suddenly an idea struck me:
lets assume you press the "left sidestep" key.
the player character then turns to the left by 90° and the camera rotates around the player to the right by 90° and you just use the normal "walk forward" routines.

when you press sidestep and forward you just do it with 45°.

viable?
or is sidestep INTENDED to give you the option of stepping out of bounds?
(and look jerky while doing it)

i think in part it became a useful feature(a bit like using 'the void' in the rpg Daggerfall) that could help you if you ever got stuck in/on something? an unitended side effect? to be honest i hardly ever use it, but its good to know its there if i do get stuck in something.

oh boy, PotC goes surrealistic. being able to step through objects is absolutely a nessesary qualification for a pirate <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

Didn't you know? All pirates are able to walk through walls. It's because they didn't realize they can't. **grins**

Kind of like the cat named Pixel in Heinlein's 'The Cat who could walk through walls'.

thank god that you don't fall through floors! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> that should be an interesting situation with a staircase! which button do you use for it anyway?

A or D will get you side-stepping. Looks kind of funny, since there is no animation. You just stand there and magically move sideways one way or the other. But it definitely has its occasional uses. **grins**

Not in all cases. When using Beatrice, and maybe Devlin too, they have sidestep animations, although they can still walk thru walls. I actually like going thru walls. It can sometimes make long journeys short.

so you could actually get through that fenced-off area in oxbay and falaise the fleur? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> i'm gonna see what happens if i try it on a slope. maybe i'll step into the air, and after the sidestep, fall to the ground. that could be interesting. you could access all kinds of places!

ooooooh, i'm gonna try that immediatly! what if you would sidestep again? would you end up above the sea after a while?

afaik you stay at the "height" you stepped out of the terrain

There are some locations however where somehow you get a hight change.
This happens in the drainage ditch areas of Redmond.

BTW, if you combine side step with "change Y value" code executed in the console.c, then you can get to some interesting places.

The background for 50Grey1 was actually taken from the 2nd floor balcony to the left of the Gov. mansion on IM.

yes, i've read about that. where else have you been?

Top of the church bell towers in Redmond and FdF and the waterfall in Douwesen quickly come to mind.

woo! base-jumping. eh, how did you get down? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

Just side stepped off. The nice thing is that you don't take damage.

i wonder if you could side-step across the sea onto your ship? oooooh the possibilities! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

Yes and no.
You can side step from the dock to you're ship or any other ship in port, but you can't stand anywhere.
You are only floating in air.

okay, i know that stepping out of bounds has its uses, but my point, originally, was...
is there any way or intention of making it.... more ... normal...

am i the only person that wants to have the option of playing with sidesteps, without the need of taking care of bounds?

you know, for me it kills immersion, if i walk through a wall.
and it seems it had been added for playing purposes rather than debugging/screenshot helping.

Try making the side step very small, and the time delay larger between steps so it will be less likely that you over-shoot and go through the wall.

i think it's way to much fun to remove. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
