This game was developed by a russian firm "akella", who previously did Sea Dogs game. This was supposed to be Sea Dogs 2, but Disney saw the opportunity to stamp its label on it, so they bought out the project, slapped a bit of potc movie content into it (not much), and the thing was released as PotC. It was released a few years ago, it was simplistic and full of bugs, but most of the structure was written in an open C-like script language. This opened vast possibilities for fixing original games shortcomings and bugs (and introducing new ones hehe). Overall, the game has been greatly improved by modders as of now. Needless to say, this is all about the PC version. While there is an xbox version, nobodyt here cares much about it.

Features... well, you walk around islands in a 1st or 3rd person, interacting with people, doing quests, doing logistics (your ship maintenance, trading goods, buying/selling your and your officers weapons and such. Think Morrowind here (though not as deep). Sea battles are also in a 3d world, you can aim guns manually or rely on your gunner officer to shoot. The graphics is VERY good indeed, especially the sea. In between sailing around islands and walking on land, you sail on a top-down view map, with other ships around you. You can engage those ships, upon which you are switched back to the 3d sailing mode. There is a "main quest", a fairly involved story that takes you all around the archipelago (a simplified version of the Caribbean region). It involves a lot of sea battles, a lot of land action and sometimes requires a bit of thinking (though not much). There is a completely fair possibility to ignore the main quest and just live the life of a captain in the Caribbean, be it merchant sailing, privateering or downright piracy. Think Morrowind again. By the way, Bethesda had its part in this too.

The current "potc build mod" is a compilation of many mods. The main (and only) integrator for all these is Pieter Boelen, a member of this very forum as well. While the appropriateness of his desire to include as many mods as there are in existence is debatable, one can't deny he is doing a very good job on that. Many mods have on/off switches in this compilation, so if one doesn't like a particular one (for example the realistic cannon aiming, which makes sea battles much harder), one can always turn it off.

The current stable and playable version of the Build Mod is 12.1 There is a Build 13 in the works and nearing completion, but there is still a considerable number of bugs in that, and the game balance is completely screwed. This is work in progress, and, with luck, it will be polished fairly soon.

Right now we are having problems (temporarily) with hosting the mods, so you might have some trouble downloading them. If you have a stable connection (the one that can stay on consistently for 24 hours at least), contact me via ICQ (see my number in the signature) and I will transfer the needed files directly.

Welcome to the forums, redCorsair! I hope you will enjoy PotC when you get it to work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The link to Build 12.1 IS working at the moment. I fixed that yesterday. I am going to upload a couple of mirrors as well, so that we should not get these troubles again any time soon.
