An Idea

Call me crazy but I just thought I'd put it out there. How feasible would it be to create some kind of fog around the Cursed Pearl? Something like the cannon fog but always lingering around the ship. Watch the scene from first film when the pearl is chasing the interceptor, it gives you a real good look. I think that would be awesome, but then... Maybe I am crazy!? Bah!

Yeah I like the idea!
I remember, the effect gives a very strong impression of something mysterious and bad about this ship, giving it a special entrance!
Also, the french ship blasting its cannons from out of nowhere in the fog in "Master and Commander" gives the same effect.

Maybe the gunsmoke could be used from that particular mod? As usual, I am of course speaking of something I know absolutely nothing about <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

wouldn't that be highly inconvenient? i can see almost nothing with the smoke we already have! i really like the idea though, as far as the impression is concerned.

Morgan I couldn't agree more about it being terribly inconvenient. That’s why I was suggesting gun smoke opposed to the environmental fog that’s everywhere and really annoying. Seriously the scene from the film shows the scope of the encompassing fog. Its really not all that oppressive just enough so that you would **** upon seeing its approach. But yes... as mentioned above this is something I know nothing about, doesn't mean I wouldn't try though! If I had the time... maybe soon, I can always be hopeful.

The problem with gunsmoke is that the more gunsmoke "particles" there are, the lower the framerate. If you would add so much smoke, it could seriously harm the smoothness of the game. However, we'll not know how badly this applies until somebody tries.

Ah yes the Acheron. That was a cool scene and another good example. However... yes... tricky... Eh another mod you say? Specifically for Master and Commander? Is this in addition to the Jack and the surprise models cause if so I'm all ears.

Yeah that had occured to me... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> If only another alternative presented itself... I'm racking my - Nobody move! I dropped me brain...

Sorry couldn't resist.

I don't suppose then that the environmental fog could say, be toned down a bit. Shrunken to a certain radius around the ship. It seems to run fine for being EVERYWHERE. But then it not being designed for that, it would most likely end quite abruptly rather than fade out.

how about a small fog-bank like environmental foginstead of gunsmoke? that kind of fog doesn't really seem to have that much effect on gamespeed at all.

I was thinking that... I don't suppose anyone would know what program to use in order to tweak that? And just as importantly any places its referenced, I wouldn't want any lose ends. Then again I'd try and duplicate it, I don't want to replace and therefore override the fog. I just don't know where to start, I'm gonna poke around till I find it but any help would be appreciated.

I think the environmental fog is either everywhere or nowhere. Personally I hate that fog. If there's fog, I can't see a thing but apparently the computer enemy can see just fine. I'm thinking something should be done about that so that the enemy can't aim as well in fog as in normal visibility or something lke that. As far as the Black Pearl is concerned: The cannon smoke idea sounds the most realistic. If somebody can makes fog particle effects be generated from a ship with an interval but without firing your cannons, then we're halfway there. It might be possible.

well not to dis potc but as far as graphics goes it isn't that demanding of a game. i mean i'm runnning it with an old radeon card and i can multitask between it and halflife 2 with no problem. so as far as lag goes... unless your running an old mac or some other pre historic thing then the added smoke shouldn't hurt the speed too much or at least i wouldn't think anyways.

I think it's more an issue of which graphics card "GPU" and how much graphics ram one has.

My old rig was a Pentium 4 (no hyperthread) 2.66 GHz.
With 128 MB vid ram on a GeForce 6800 GT it lagged with the Surprise and LuggerVML in the same scene with larger fleets of stock ships. (ten or more ships)

he's got a point (petros) i still think we should go ahead with the smoke though. that would give the cursed pearl a real creppy feeling to it.

well, my computer sucks in just about every area, except the keyboard. i think my post count proves that.

Keyboard likes you ..or vice versa. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Actually my computer is not such a good thing either but i at least got Pentium 3 1.7 ghz and about 700 of ram but graphics card... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> ATI RADEON 9000 WITH 32MB RAM!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> *PEW! and another monitor is smashed to pieces*

Time to upgrade. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Smoke for the Pearl would be nice. Somebody needs to work on it though. You might want to start with checking out the cannon graphics code, where you can see how the particles are generated. Search in the PROGRAM folder for "SHIPHIT_PARTICLES".
