Any modelers using Maya?

I have a .mb file which is a Maya Binary file format. It's a Brig. I'd like to change it to .gm so I can test it in PotC. Can we do that?

I hope so. This is a ship that Grumblepunk made (he isn't around anymore) and I'd like to get it into the game if possible. It's a really nice one - I have it because I was going to paint it up - and have worked on it a bit but I can't test it because it's not in a format I can use.

Inez, does your Tool work for this format, or do we need to save it as something else?

I actually HAVE Maya (just not installed) and if I can use it to save as a format we can work with in Inez's Tool, hopefully we can add this new Brig into the game!

Help, please? I don't know a THING about modeling (haven't had the time to learn).

Thanks!

The tool cannot read mb format. But Maya should be able to export to VRML (or 3ds, or obj, which can then with other programs be converted to VRML).

Aye, but therein lies the rub. I cannot export to anything resembling VRML or OBJ or 3DS, and I can't seem to find any plugins to help me with that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

I can't quite figure out what to do. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

Is it the PLE you have? That can't indeed export anything useful. If not, what *can* you export? I think Alan has found some way to export VRML from Maya.
Besides there are the Plugins to export gm directly from Maya (must be a link in the Wiki).

I have the regular Maya Unlimited 4.5 and could never get the Akella plugins to work on it.

I can export in .mb (maya binary), .ma (maya ascii), or .mov (move).

Part of the problem is that this is a very outdated program. If anyone had any plugins for 4.5, they are long gone.

Alan may indeed have found a way to make this work. I look forward to his return so he may shed some light on this subject. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Thanks, Inez. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hi Catalina,

if you put your .mb file somewhere I can download it,
then I can try with my maya at home to convert it to .gm.
I have succeeded before doing so, but can not promise I will
succeed before I see the model.

Trebutor

Thank you, Trebutor, I hope this works - good luck with it!

Sure hope you can do something with it, thatou would be great! I really appreciate your help! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

OK. I will have a try at it tomorrow (as I do not work this friday)
cross your fingers.

What I can tell you from now:

Usually ships comes in more than one .gm file. We should have one file
for the hull and others for the masts. We also need the tga files for the
textures. I can try to split the model in hull and masts when writing the
gm files and use default game textures.

Trebutor

I noticed that when looking at the model in Maya - Grumblepunk did a nice job but it IS all one piece.

I do have some skinwork done on it (GP made an image map) but it's not finished. Here's what I have:

<a href="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/gp_Brig_01.tga" target="_blank">gp_Brig_01.tga</a>

He had a specific color scheme in mind - mostly black and white.

I also altered the deck skin a little but for testing I'm sure you could use the usual one from PotC.

If it turns out to be too much trouble, please don't worry about it. It's not really that important... I just thought people would like it, and it has bothered me that I never got the skin done for it.

Well, first step was easy:

I organised the geometry in hull, masts and reys, removed double sided
triangles (choose the correct side to be textured) and saved to gm format.

What is missing: locators for rigs, ropes and masts.
You can put them inside maya following Duke Suraknar and Verruckt wiki
page. But I guess it's even more easy to do it with Inez's Tool.
I, alas, have no more spare time to do it today.

In the file you will find the .mb file updated and all the .gm
files without locators. I didn't include the tga and tga.tx files to have a
small enough archive. But you will of course need : gp_Brig_01.tga and gp_Brig_deck_06.tga (the default deck file) and the corresponding .tx files.

WOW, thanks, Trebutor! This is great, maybe I'll finally get this into the game! Your help is MUCH appreciated! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ty" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />

Have an ale (or two or three...)! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" />

Thanks again... I'm not as good at this as I'd like to be - one day I will take the time to learn, but as you say, "no more spare time"! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Thanks again! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" /> You are a gem! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Well, I would really like to see this ship in game !
If you have some trouble with the locators, tell me,
I will try to find some more spare time.

Good luck and thanks for the ale <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
