Greetings mateys <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> .....are there any modeling tool for POTC that is free? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Well, Zozogh has been experimenting with Milkshape, but I dunno... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

Milkshape's also only free for a trial period, but it's much less expensive than the "big" tools such as Maya, Max or lightwave.

<a href="http://www.blender3d.org/" target="_blank">http://www.blender3d.org/</a>

I'm absolutely new to 3d modeling & have found this to be a very powerful tool.

...& very easy to learn <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

That looks like a cool program, GreyDog, thanks for the tip! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Can you export from Blender to a format (maybe VRML?) that can be then used by PotC? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Aye Cat, It will work with a dozen or so formats including vrml1.0, vrml 2.0 (export only) & obj. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Fantastic! I need to take a serious look at this - Never could make heads or tails out of Maya... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Never really took the time, tho. And with Inez's Tool, if we can export to VRML, we can use Inez's tool to convert to .gm and we're on the way! GREAT FIND!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Actually, Inez's tool exports vrml 2.0 ...I have not found a program besides her tool & I believe 3Ds Max, that will import it. I've had to export .obj out of the GM viewer for use in Blender.

Just to show how easy it is to learn ..

I just started learning modeling around the end of Jan.

cool... can you use it in freespace?? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> That's great, GreyDog! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Is that for a specific game?

This could really be the solution to all our problems! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Sofus...

Hmm...I'll have to check that out <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Its about 4300 polys smoothed ...should probably be less set solid. Would that work in the game?

Cat...

Thanks <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

No, its just a learning project. I still need to add the engine & cockpit & then I'll learn how to UV map with it.

Inez..

I'm afraid it doesn't solve <i>all</i> of our problems. The GM viewer spits out less than perfect .obj's that require some work. Not so much with ships but the towns come out really screwy & require much work. (havn't tried characters yet) If someone (wink, wink) could figure out how to get cleaner models to import into it, that would solve many more or our problems <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I tested it on characters (Hawk) & it imported the .obj fairly well!

not sure if it carried over tex info tho...
