Are naval battles supposed to be in slow motion?

Kent

Landlubber
Pretty much what I said in the subject line. All movement and actions in naval battles are extremely slow in comparison to when I am just sailing around. It's as though the game speed has been dialed back significantly. Is this right? It strikes me that it is not. Let me know what you think, and if it is a problem, what I might try to fix it. Thanks.

P.S. I realize this sounds like a 'technical problem' post, but as I'm not sure if it actually IS a tech prob, I chose to post here. Apologies in advance.

if you are having trouble with the speed, try lowering your resolution in the setup menu, or lowering the graphic details should also help.

Every other element of the game runs silky smooth with the settings where they are (scaled to about half -object and world detail). JUST naval battles are slow.

Tell me this. In your game, when you are sailing around and choose to attack a ship, does the overall movement speed decrease when you enter 'battle mode' compared to when you were just sailing around or does the battle play out at the exact same speed as normal sailing?

This happened to me alot until I turned of `Anti-Aliasing` on my graphics card. Took a hit in graphics, but it still looks good enough. Doing so, however, sped up my ship battler and duels considerably. Also sped up land fall related stuff as well (i.e. - treasure hunting, land battles, etc.).

Just because all other aspects of the game run fine doesn't mean naval battles will. Why don't you post your system specs.

Also what kind of slow motion do you mean? Slower turning and sailing then on the map is normal, especially if you didn't do any speed/movement upgrades to your ship like Cotton Sails.

Also shut down programs that are active on the background. (Virusscanners, Instant Messengers etc...)

Granted, one aspect of a game running smoothly doesn't indicate that every other aspect should. However, the naval battle portion of this game hardly seems as though it would put a significantly higher load on one's system. Come to think of it, it kind of reminds me of Star Control 2... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Admittedly my system is quite weak (only an AMD 1.6, GForce 2 64mb, 512 mb ram), but as I have said, everything except these naval battles runs at a very pleasing level. Maybe I'm oblivious to what is actually having to be processed by the computer for these battles. Maybe someone could enlighten me as to why the system load would be so much higher in these instances, or offer any other thoughts on this issue. Thanks again.

I am not a computer guy, but, I think the individual shots that come out of the cannons, the crew standing on deck waving flags, the water lapping on the ocean, the computer having to figure trajectories for each shot while visually rendering each type of shot fired, (chain, ball, grapeshot) the animation for the cannon ports opening and closing.

Thats what I think of just from looking at the game.. oh yea I forgot the bodies that go flying into the air and into the ocean when you connect, the cargo that gets knocked overside and my favorite, when a ship Explodes!!!

Well you have practicly the same PC as me. Exept that I have a good processor <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I have a;
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2,1 GHz
512 MB RAM
nVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440
(The GeForce MX is practicly the same as a GeForce2)

I run that game at;
1280x960
Object detail on high
Water detail on lowest (the game doesn't allow me to put it higher)
Advanced Lighting On
Shadows Off
Trilinear Filtering Off (If you shut it off it uses Bilinear instead, but you don't notice a difference in quality so untick it)

It's just that our graphiccards don't support DirextX 9.0, I was also quite surprised I lag sometimes well the game looks fairly simple to me. No big explosion effects etc... (in my instance very simple water) and still lagging <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />

I think there might be a also a bug involved, since most of my battles are fine, but sometimes they feel like in slow motion. I have an AthlonXP 2400, 1024 MB, and a Radeon 9800 pro.

My battles tend to be faster when I am not in sight of land. I think if you can switch to your chase cam view and see land anywhere on the horizon, you are gonna have some slow down - or if you fight two ships. Add both of those to the equation and things can get sluggish. When I get a sloop to sloop battle in deep blue water, it moves quite fast.

AMD 2.0 GHZ
1 GB RAM
ATI 9500 Pro 128 MB

Great! Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. It's relieving to know that someone else is aware of what I'm talking about. As long as I know it's chronic for many, I can relax and be confident that when I eventually upgrade, it should all be OK. You've been helpful. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I don't get it... I just googled out this problem and found this thread.

No issues per se in regular sailing, but ship to ship combat is horrible.

Barton 2500+ (1.8GHz)
512MB Corsair XMS
BFG GF 6800 OC

More tech details to follow if necessary, but my system is pretty current. Is there any way of fixing this problem?

Just wunder'n mate,are ye always attack'n enemy ships with wind in yer favor,if not,yer ship will move slow <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

The wind changes more in a ship battle, and if you use the chase view to play the game, and zoom in or out using the plus or minus key on the numeric pad, you will probably see, very little change in the ship battles.

Especially if you notice that the wind is changing all the time during the close up view of the ship battles, and zooming in will make it faster, and there ain't no engine on ye ship!

I think the game is meant to be played in chase view, and except perhaps, when just returning to port to the East, then use the other view, as you will get there faster in your real time!

And watch the sails of your ship when in Chase View mode, since that makes a difference along with the clouds to get there faster!
Nice straight lined sails -- sailing along instead of flapping against the wind!

And `zig-zag` for the best wind and sailing conditions, just like real sailing!

Hmm, and I thought the cannon balls travelling in slow motion was due to the fact I'm playing the game with a `P3-800mhz`.
But apparently this is not `CPU-related`; perhaps a memory leak during the combat sequences?
Even though my system technically doesn't meet minimum requirements, everything runs quite smoothly until the combat screen.
If I wasn't using a DX9 compliant 128mb FX5200 vidcard, and 512mb memory, no doubt things would be considerably slower...

No, there is definitely a serious issue at work.

On my craptop, which uses a 9700 Mobile chipset backed on a 1.5Ghz Centrino platform, I have no problems of this nature.

If it works on ya laptop, but not ya PC,
Then a serious issue it can not be.
Look to the driver of your graphics device,
Cuz anything but the latest does not suffice.
So head on offer to Nvidia.com
For the latest drivers are da bomb!

For what it's worth, I have a crap processor. 750 mgz, but I have 1.5 gig of ram and the game runs fine, no slow down anywhere except the occasional sword fight when TrendMicro decides to kick in without asking.

I'm amazed that a bios for a motherboard that has a 750 processor would allow 1.5G of RAM! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

If you did that on your own (tweaking the system), I have a laptop that is in desperate need of some HELP! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
