attack friendly force?

Hi, can i attack friendly ships? or colonies? im currently friendly with all nations, but for example if i want to capture a french frigate, it seems i cant do so. i switched to battle view, fired loads of bullets to the ship, they still remain friendly, making it not possible to cripple. i wonderif this is same to capturing colonies... is there any way to mass relations with a nation? thanks
 
Actually, thats exactly what you should be able to do. Usually, just going to deck level, and firing off a volley or two on a friendly immediately turns them hostile to you. You may want to do it by pulling right up next to them and fire it off from basically point blank range.

You need to have them in range, target so you get the grey or green cross and fire. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
This will change them to hostile. Firing while the targeting cross is yellow has no effect.
