Check out <a href="http://www.taleworlds.com/index.html" target="_blank">Mount and Blade</a>, there is even a <a href="http://www.mbrepository.com/modules/PDdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=7&lid=598" target="_blank">Pirates of Calradia</a> Mod so you can sail the seas of the world, playing as a sailor/pirate!

MB is fun. Although the lack of a central story line or goal can be a be a let down. I've been playing since the early .8XX versions. I look forward to trying out 1.03 when I get the chance.

I like it quite a bit. For a general freeform type game, its pretty damned good. And I always figured your general storyline was based on the selections you made during char creation.

Excellent game - play it regularly. But with every update it runs slower and slower on my ageing machine. That's not a complaint though, it's come a long way since its early days.

I am not sure that the Piratey mod is supported for the current version of the game though - although I have not checked for a while.

Slowness has become a problem with it on my machine as well <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> . I'm glad they never stuck a central story in it.

The Pirate mod hasn't been updated since version .903, which was back at the start of the year. The mod seems to have been abandoned. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

And, in response to Morgan's mention of my activities on their forum, yes, I like driving the mods over there nuts. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> They irritated me one too many times, so now they get it back. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

That's why I've stuck with .903 for now - I still get most of the mods, and I haven't played each of them enough to consider upgrading to 1.003 and losing them. I've been playing Expanded Gameplay for ages now, and finally lost my 223 day-old character out of carelessness. The possibility of death has to be the WORST feature of that mod. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

M&B is a great game. I've been at it only since .903 and have been nagged at quite a bit by the wyfe about it. Due to life, I haven't been able to give 1.003 a true look beyond an hour or two. Just checked the site, looks like 1.010 is out now.

It's supposed to be loaded with bugs, and I've heard there'll be a fix out soon. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> You might want to hold off a bit and see if they release another update. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I've been playing since .751 - found it by way of the IGF's yearly indie game awards.
