Beginner Questions

Ahoy thar!

This is my first post after having a mosey around on the site.

I've played POTC for a few hours and I'm still getting used to the controls and interface and the general way in which the game works (I'm not used to RPGs).

I know they've been done, but after some searching I'm still not having a great deal of luck on finding answers to some of the questions I have in mind (my fault I'm sure).

Okay, so 'ere we go:

1. How do you board enemy ships? - (I've done this once, by accident, and haven't been able to figure out how since)

2. What is the Build Mod?

3. Who(m) creates the Build Mod?

4. What does the Build Mod entail?

5. Does the build Mod make the game more complicated to get used to?

6. Should you complete the original game first? - Or should you install the Build Mod immediately

7. The Build Mod versions - 1- 13/14? - Are they different or progressive/add ons updates?
In other words do you go through them, or do you begin with the latest one?

8. Do you have to spend a long time running through jungles before you get to areas of interest? (Pirate taverns)

9. Does the build mod deal with changing character/ship skins or is information regarding that available elsewhere?

10. Is there a guide with simple tips or guidelines for playing that game to aid not missing fun/important parts of the game?

11. How long do you think dedicated fans of the game will be playing it?

12. On first viewing of the game, I can see it getting repetitive. Is this a silly prejudgment?

13. Is there a way of seeing the replies to posts on the forum without having to click on the reply links below?

14. Do you hate me now that I've asked too many questions that you don't feel like answering?

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Thank you,

paul.

1. Try to go sailing next to an enemy ship, if you are close enough a grapplehook icon apears in the screen, then you will have to push F3.
2. Build mod is a sort of unofficial add-on, it adds more ships (also more types) (really more), much more characters, it adds more locations (like cuba and hispaniola) more features, more weapons.
3. It is created by a lot of people, it is a community mod, everyone who makes mods (skinning modelling, programming) can submit their thing.
4. See 2 new content/features
5. You will have more to discover, but really hard? It is different from the stock game, so you will have to get used with it.
6. You can put the build mod up immediatly, the stock game quests still are in it (and you can go further after the mainquest, in stockgame the game is finished)
7. How higher the build mod version, how further developed it is. the latest one is Build 14 Alpha 7, only you need a seperate fix with it, otherwise it won't work.
8. On some islands, Hispaniola and Cuba are big islands so they have big jungles.
9. With the build mod you can choose different main characters and ships and your nation and starting place.
10. I have no idea
11. You can just save and stop, but you can also play hours and hours.
12. No, with the build there is much more to do.
13. I have no idea.
14. Yeah, I should have cut out your tong, shoot you, and shoot your tong, and trim that beard <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> No just kidding, It only took a long time to answer

Wow... I wasn't expecting anyone to exclusively answer them all. Thank you for taking the time, great answers (especially 2+9).

Just to add a few details to Thomas' excellent reply:

1. Initially at least, you need to get very close to the enemy and preferably match his course and speed. When conditions are right, as Thomas says, you get the icon and press F3. Improving your boarding skill and taking the relevant special abilities allows you to board from longer range at different courses and speeds. If you boarded an enemy ship by accident, what probably really happened is that he boarded you! Enemy captains also have skills and abilities, which means he may have been able to board you before you could board him.

6. Up to you, I suppose. You could play the original game first, then regard the Build Mod as a whole new game, sort of PotC 2.

11. I've been playing the original game for years. I hadn't found this forum, so I kept finding secondary quests by myself, meaning there always seemed to be something else to discover.

12. I suppose you might eventually find the combat repetitive, but there are lots of different quests to find.

13. Which browser are you using? In Firefox, I just scroll down to read replies. The "Reply" button is to write your own reply!

14. No. The ones I didn't answer are those where I have nothing to add. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
