Hey guys. I just started playing POTC and it's pretty cool. I've only played the vanilla version and haven't tried the mod yet. One of the things that really pisses me off is how when any battles start you are already right on top of eachother. With smaller ships it's not that big of a deal but with the big ships the battle is sometimes over in one or two broadsides.

Is there anyway to start the battles at a further distance through gameplay or modding? Is this something that Build 12 changes?

There are a lot of changes in the Builds, including new character skins, bigger & better ships, better selection of weapons & different options as to how you want to play.

That used to bug me too. I made a change for it that was incorporated in the latest modded version.

If you want to try changing it in the stock game, look in the file PROGRAMS/SEA_AI/AISea.c and find the line that says "case SAIL_TO_CHARACTER:". The next line should contain two numbers, 40 and 60. Change 40 to the minimum distance you want to appear next to the enemy ships, and change 60 to the amount of variation you want added to 40 to make a max distance. As it is, you end up 40-100 yards from the enemy (40+60). If you wanted to be 250-400 yards, you'd make the two numbers 250 and 150 (250+150 = 400). Make a copy of the file before you change it in case you mess something up.

I've been playing the latest version of the modded game, and I'll tell you that I could never go back to the original game. I can't even go back to the latest "stable" build, build 12.1 at this point.

Thanks for the reply. Do the mods specifically address the starting engagement range?

****EDIT

You replied at the same time I did. Thanks!!!

I think the starting engament range was changed, yes. I recall in one version, you were pretty far away from the enemy when the battle would start. I don't know anymore if that was Build 11 or Build 12 though... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
