look how many ships are in this fleet!

why cant we have that many ships with us?

Just because there can be up to 32 ships at sea location while player fleet is restricted to only 4 ships - and that limit is hardcoded. Besides, those AI "fleets" aren't fleets but only separate friendly ships at nearby locators, I think.

Is that not multiple AI fleets ocurring at the same spot? Don't think I'd be want to be trifling with any of them...there's a lot of guns out there.

Do you have the courage and fortitude to follow orders and stay true in the face of danger and almost certain death?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
<i>Mr Cotton's Parrot...same question.</i>
Man I love that scene...

yea its one english convoy and if i can take out 4 manowars and 3 battleships of a french fleet, then i can take this out VERY easily <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

I've seen that. I joined in a 'battle at sea' between Holland and England. Each side have about 7 ships. I only had one sloop.

They spent a lot of time dancing around, and not much firing at each other. I think they were just all confused who were who, and didn't want to hit their own people, so they simply chose not to fire.

On occasion one would fire a volley...

Then I raise my jolly roger, and proceeded to scare the crap out of 8 ships immediately as they all surrendered to me. Man, I have GOT to find a good setting for that surrender chance <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Works nicely that little bit of scavenging. Though I usually aim to stay neutral and just pick off one side in the battle, depending on who looks more full of goodies. I usually let 'em engage each other first (they do eventually...though sometimes I have to initiate things) and thin out a bit so there's less chance of being hit by multiple broadsides then either wait until someone surrenders (and get their first, though this sometimes cost reputation) or hoist me skull n bones and dive on in. It's quite enjoyable just being a spectator to a huge naval battle.

What value are you using for the surrender multiplier then? Mine's - I think - the default '1' and I've not seen too many acts of cowardice by enemy ships.

I was having problems boarding surrenderd ships once the sea battle was over. I changed the surrender chance in InternalSettings.h and set SURR_GLOBAL_SCL to 0. Now no ships surrender and I get to board them all <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Its more realistic that way: Jolley Roger = No Quarter = No Surrender
And more fun too <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

A similar thing happened to me last night. There we were, our 3 frigates limping back to Oxbay after plundering a Crapaud patrol when a Dutch patrol instigated an engagement. Blimey! 12 or so 1st raters appeared from the gloom. I say gloom because visibility was poor, and I like to play the game without using the 'sail to' feature, thereby having to rely on ship indentification, odds for taking a prize(if room allows) makes the game more enjoyable for me. And adds an element of realism when deciding whether or not to engage.
Managed to escape easily enough with minimal losses. Shame we cant have as many in our fleet eh.

I entered a battle and it was Britian vs. France vs. Holland
so there were three fleets of around 8 ships each plus me!
I didnt really want to get into such a huge battle so I escaped but when I spawned I was in the middle surrounded by the fleets lol.
