Black Screen

I have installed the build mod 13 full, and when i start up the shortcut, then go through to creating a new game, i create the game, and then it shows a loading screen. Then it goes onto a black screen and says the relations with the other factions. It then just stays on this screen. Pressing F2 works as normal as does F1, but then nothing happens when i go back onto the game. Help me please...

just your video card i guess. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> don't know if this helps, but you could try setting the graphics quality lower. in the configurations in the windows start menu. did the game work properly before you installed the build?

ok...then something has gone wrong. i haven't seen this happen before. did you follow the instructions that came with it? (just trying to eliminate the obvious things here)

Yep, i followed the instructions to the dot. Installed in program files/potc/potc mod

That's a weird path to install to. Make sure you install Build 13 FULL (over 300 MB file) to your original PotC installation folder and run RunMe.bat afterwards. Installing Build 12.1 BEFORE this might work better, so you could try that.

Yep, it worked. And i have 13/3, just dunno how to install it yet

copy the files in the update to the PotC main directory (make sure that you place them in the right place!) and overwrite when asked. this should replace the files that need to be replaced with the new ones that contain the changes.

Do i have to restart the game for the changes to happen?

yes, due to new features that have been added. pressing F12 after you have started the new game might solve some possible issues as well. but i don't that that would be nessesary.

F12? That's the console. I suppose you mean F11 Reinitialize. This is done during the starting of a new game though and it is not required to it manually afterwards again.

I guess this would be a technical question. I have been reading through these threads and must admit that I'm rather green on the subject of "builds" to games such as POTC. I just bought the game a few weeks ago on ebay and so haven't played it yet. I'm replaying Sea Dogs right now since I never finished it though I bought that one back when it was released. I was constantly having problems with that game in the beginning with red blocks over some of the graphics and I went on to a Sea Dog forum and they were helpful and it turned out just getting a new video card cured all those problems. So far it seems pretty bug free with the 1.06 patch.
I'm wondering though, I've heard that POTC is very buggy, should that be played first with the builds (which I'm guessing are just program extensions written by others) since I've read there aren't any patches for POTC except for the Russian version, and which build is the most stable that's out there now?

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Old Salt,
Play the org. Game first before you try the Mods!
The game's not too bad in it's org. form. Than install
Mod 13 and update 3. It still has Bugs, but it's not bad!
After that have a go at 14/6. again it's not that stable
but playable! There is always this forum to help out,
when thing go wrong! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

you should indeed play the stock game first to get the hang of how to play it. if you try the build straight away it could prove to be a little bit too difficult.

If you play the original unmodded game first, that would give you a better appreciation of all the work the modders have done, so I can recommend doing that. The original game is quite playable, but a bit buggy on occasion and there's not much interesting things to do apart from playing the main quest. Build 12.1 greatly enhances the game: It fixes many bugs and introduces many new features to make the game much more worthwhile. Build 13 again improves the game over Build 12.1: Even more features and quite playable as well. It isn't 100% bug-free, but I don't think it's worse than any of the previous versions. Build 14 Alpha 6 adds yet more worthwhile features, but the Alpha is not an "official" ready-to-play version yet, because we're still working on it. It IS playable, but there are a bunch of weird bugs in there. So in short:

Original game: Bit buggy and becomes boring quickly
Build 12.1: More features, less bugs
Build 13 + Update 3: Even more features
Build 14 Alpha 6: Yet more features, but MORE bugs as well. Still in testing phase.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Pieter,
.........The Mefisto Quest works well in the org. game!!!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Thanks for the quick responses everyone. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> I'll follow that advice and play the original game first. I've never played a game that was modded so I'm looking forward to it. Its great to see that older games like this one are rejuvinated this way. I guess you could do just about anything, add new characters, new ships or new quests through the builds. if the bugs in the original or the builds just amount to the game freezing up every once in a while, you can deal with that just by saving it often I guess.
Once again, thanks for the info and am glad to have found this forum dedicated to pirate games. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
