Blacksmith mod

NB: For more on this, there's the--shoot, which thread is it?--where I think Cat and I and maybe someone else too (sorry if I forgot you, whoever you are : ) were discussing multiple/more complex inventory systems.

Daggers vs. Swords, Nathan.

no worries, if/when you like. it was only an idea <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Oh yeah, and about the idea of limiting weapon sales to 'smiths... it kind of makes sense, and I do think it's a little odd to get every sort of item at a shop (I might like to see medicines taken out and sold instead in an apothocary), but I didn't plan on giving every single island a blacksmith. Oxbay was going to go without, to keep the English from doubling up and keep the player from levelling up to a perfect sword at the beginning of the game. Oxbay could still have a smith, I suppose, but his abilities could be limited. RobC and I talked about this, that each blacksmith would have different degrees of skill in gun/sword repair. The Spanish would be great with swords but poorer with guns, for instance. Can the graphical interface reflect this, or is it a single set of code applied to all smiths? And not having tried it yet I have to ask, does it repair guns too?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

yes, it repairs guns. currently it gives you the option to upgrade to good, fine or excellent level and charges you ([the selling price of the one you want] minus [the buying price of the one you've got]), but that is all completely changeable.

it's a single interface applied to all smiths, but it'd be really easy add in customisation for each individual smith. and on those islands with no smith, it'd be easy for the shopkeeper to have both swords and weapons.

This is shaping up into a really great mod, I am truly looking forward to using it in the game! EXCELLENT WORK!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Will it be possible to keep the blades for the black smith and guns for a gunsmith as they are too different jobs, and there are so many unlocked houses and buildings on these islands that it really wouldn't matter about splitting them into two different jobs.

Also I think I mentioned this before, but by using I assume similar code to that of the Greatzen items, is it possible to take a jewel or a, a different metal to your swordsmith and get him to either add the jewel to your sword and this maybe give it a different effect, like the different items affect your skill levels this would affect the way in which your sword works.
Or if you find a particular types of metal you can take them too the swordsmith and dependant on the amount of metal or type you can get particular swords made with an added ability, e.g. a metal that allows for a sharper blade will equal more damage ability, a metal that allows for a stronger blade will equal added blocking capability and a metal that is lighter allows quicker swordplay therefore a greater ability to pierce through blocks, of course you could wait until you have all three metals and take them all to the swordsmith and he can make you a fine mighty sword using an alloy of all three metals. You can decide what it could look like as well the stats of the sword dont neccisarily have to fit that of a particular looking sword. Also dependant on the quality of the metal used I think you should only be able to sharpen your sword a limited ammount of times, otherwise you will end up with no sword, obviously this would be a large number but it makes for more realism. Also the amount to which the sharpening could go is relavant to the quality of metal. You could also buy different types of material, twine leather e.t.c. for the handle of the sword allowing a more comfortable and stronger grip on the sword and therefore rizing your attack block and pierce ability fractionally again. This is what I've always wanted to be able to see in the swordsmith. Another Idea would be that you could buy your own (I think they're called this.) Oil stones which allow your too sharpen your sword yourself, or slow the rate at which you have to go back to a swordsmith and get it sharpened. I also think only particular looking types of sword should be available at different swordsmiths, e.g. the rapiers at French Island, the Tizona at Spanish Island, etc, the sabers at English Islands, The cutlass type ones at the Pirates Island, the standard saber everywhere. Make a particular styles of blades for each nation.

Now for the gunsmith, I think maybe we need some different more varying guns to start with, e.g. I haven't seen any muskets yet, or a blunderbus. Again the metal can be applied to this a stronger metal means stronger barrel, which means better grade gun powder or greater amount of gunpowder charge used, (I'll get to this in a minute) Therefore increased damage caused by the bullet. You could also increase the accuracy of the gun by using better quality metal as well, and as with the sword the more use the less accurate it gets and to help slow this down or prevent you can buy gun cleaning kits. A crappy cleaning kit only slows the rate at which the gun looses its ability and decent kit stops it altogether, as good care for a gun will stop its decay from gun powder pitting the barrel. Also you should be able to have to buy gunpowder for you gun in its little bottles inits actual sizes for the gun and it lowers your recharge rate but because there is more small bottles to carry, it equals less amount of times before you buy more gun powder, or you buy a large cask of gunpowder which means you get more shots out of your gunpowder because its less equipment to carry but more space in the one container, but slower recharge rate as you have to gauge the amount poured into you gun. You could also buy varying quality of powder for the gun worked on a percentage of the guns ability, e.g. crappy powder will be say 80 % of your guns ability, standard powder would be 100 & of your guns ability, expensive powder would be 110% of your guns ability and best powder would be 120% of your guns ability. Also the crappier the powder the quicker the gun will need repairing or cleaning. You should also be able to buy musket balls, again at varying quality and numbers in different size pouches to add more varyity and be able to buy just a few if thats all you can afford. Again the balls differing quality can be worked on a percentage of the guns ability, cheap balls = 50% of the guns ability (as they would be soft and irregular shaped not fitting the bore very well and therefore fly awful and the softness would decrease the damage done) mediocre balls 75% of the ability(fitting the bore better slightly harder metal increase accuracy and impact damage) Standard Balls 100% of guns ability (again fits better in barrel) Expensive Balls, 115% of guns ability and Best Balls 130% of gus ability.

This is just my input and what I would love to see in the game as this would add the best realism effect to it.

There is also one more thing that I think should be added to the game, when a ship surrenders to you or you board it succesfully the Captain should hand over his sword as they did, therefore it would be a decent one and you can't sell it as it is kept in your cabin or chest so you can see how many you collect.

I understand this would be a lot of work but it would be well worth the effort, what does everyone else think?

sounds great !!!!!!!!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

absolutely, but since it's more work and effort, probably not before build 12... (catalina's cracking the whip you see <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> )

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->...is it possible to take a jewel or a, a different metal to your swordsmith and get him to either add the jewel to your sword and this maybe give it a different effect...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

yep this is possible, but it would have to come with a whole overhaul of the way weaponry is handled in the game (see nathan's ideas on that).

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--> I also think only particular looking types of sword should be available at different swordsmiths, e.g. the rapiers at French Island, the Tizona at Spanish Island, etc, the sabers at English Islands, The cutlass type ones at the Pirates Island, the standard saber everywhere. i wholly agree. and ooh there could be little flags on the interface! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> (if you haven't noticed, i love flags <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" /> )

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Now for the gunsmith, I think maybe we need some different more varying guns to start with, e.g. I haven't seen any muskets yet, or a blunderbus.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

adding guns/blades has been made easy in the build - you just have to add your new graphics (currently a few graphics for each weapon, for different quality levels) and add a line in items_init.c. add away <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Again the metal can be applied to this a stronger metal means stronger barrel, which means better grade gun powder or greater amount of gunpowder charge used, ...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

again, this could all be possible with nk's proposed revamp of the inventory. the problem is that at the minute, if you want to have a gun with slightly different stats, you need to add a whole new item to the game. nk proposes having gun items with modifiable stats.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Also you should be able to have to buy gunpowder for you gun in its little bottles inits actual sizes for the gun and it lowers your recharge rate but because there is more small bottles to carry, it equals less amount of times before you buy more gun powder, or you buy a large cask of gunpowder which means you get more shots out of your gunpowder because its less equipment to carry but more space in the one container, but slower recharge rate as you have to gauge the amount poured into you gun ...

it's a good idea, and certainly realistic... but a computer game is always a balance between realism and playability. the player shouldn't have to read a manual on gun reloading beforfe they play the game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" /> i think the gunpowder stuff may be complicating stuff a bit too much.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->There is also one more thing that I think should be added to the game, when a ship surrenders to you or you board it succesfully the Captain should hand over his sword as they did, therefore it would be a decent one and you can't sell it as it is kept in your cabin or chest so you can see how many you collect.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

i believe the russian update included an 'ear collector' and an 'anchor collector,' a 'sword collector' shouldn't be too hard to implement...

For the gun powder reloading thing i didnt mean you as the player controller would have to gauge the amount poured in, its just in real life you would so therefore extend the time of reloading by a second or two, where as the small powder bottles cut it down by a second or two LOL perhaps i didnt make it clear enough.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> "ear collector" ??? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

I think this surrendering his sword thing might be handled quite neatly by an `in-game` movie. ?

I didn't mean to be the one "cracking the whip" <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" /> but there are a lot of people out there itchy to have all these new mods for their games... I did not mean to "take over" but it was a job that needed to be done and nobody else seemed willing to step up and do it... So here I am... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Yep and ye either keep em on your wall in your Cabin if that can be made possible, or in your chest and maybe a blurb comes up underneath em when you read about them like in your inventory, e.g. this was Captain David Leanders Sword from the ship Black Bird or what ever. Maybe you can use em too but not sell em as they are your prizes to remind you of what ships ye been a takin. Ears mite be gud too, you cud av the choice either kill him and when you do keep his ear for ye jar, if not be humane and nick his sword and keep that then kill em hhehehehehe uhum i mean ransom him. Do you think we cud nick his gun as well?

So cat what mods are forth coming in build 12 then?

Will read all this good stuff later, am running out the door.
But quick response re: itemmaker.
That's real simple: use code similar to GetNewCharacter or whatever func I wrote for reinit'ing characters, but make new item; and then add item.skill.whatever
BUT no new picture, just new text.
(and then on next reinit, clean "unused" `made-items` to make new slots in array).

Rico, it might be nice if when you make that kind of comment that you also give the link to the thread, otherwise people might think you're being deliberately abusive. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

No, we're discussing swords like for the BLACKSMITH mod... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

I were talking about both in the post before and swords which were the bit Cat was talkin about.

And you're right I was a little offended by the comment but still I just chose not to respond to it and waited until someone else said summit not to worry enough, Im not hacked off enough to get arsey but really is there any need for language that bad on a public forum where some people may be quite young on here?

Cat I've got me cannons workin proper now do ye want em for the B12 i just got some tweaks to do!

Re: image. No, I mean a new image of a sword with a jewel in it; you can of course pick for the newly created sword any image you like that's _already in the game_, just you can't create a new one _from inside the game_.

BTW the above applies _only_ to the speculation about a mod that would allow you to, for lack of a better word enchant, your swords.

It does _not_ apply to the current Blacksmith mod.
