British Royal nave colours and other things...

Ah, very nice, Sigma! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Thank you for sharing!

Try Inez's character import tool for your ships - I haven't been able to play with it yet (been really busy), but it should work nicely AND give you locators too...

Let us know how it goes!

hmm. . . seems Inez's tool is optimized for characters. . . I can convert ships back and forth, but so far not with their locators intact. . . (I have a Barque on my HD with locators for a human. . . wonder what that would look like ingame. . . <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> )

I'm probably doing something wrong. . . hehe, I'm an artist, not a programmer. . . <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Now with out being to much of a pain would it possible to also enlarge the surprise to make her into one of her larger partner vessels as well, like the HMS Diana a 36 or 38 gun frigate, by adding gun ports to a slightly larger model.

If only i knew how to use 3ds max i have it but dont know how to use it!

The frigates in potc are slightly over powered for standard frigates they are more like a heavier frigate.

Thought I'd just point out that in the M&C models the picture of the Surprise has atleast one gun port that I can see in her forcastle forward of her foremast, enless this was a later addition to her.

Okies according to this website which seems pretty believable as the site has used Admiralty drawings to figure this out....

She was equipped with 12 32 pdr carronades on her quarter deck and forecastle. (with the apparant capability of installing 6 more if you look at the gund ports) and 2 9 pdr long gun chasers in the forecastle.

So far that makes 14 guns (possible configuration of 20)

Then her main gun deck carries 22 12 pdr guns (with capacity to carry 2 more)

So in total actual capacity is a massive 36 guns which is incredible for a ship of her size but the ability to carry 44 which is astounding for a ship of her size although this would most likely slow her sailing ability.

Just though I'd let you all in on this bit of info.

here is the web addy.

number of 'guns' in this period refers only to the number of guns carried, not including carronades, and not including anything additional that the captain might have added.

My model is made form the Admiralty drawings made immediately after her capture from the French by the UK (when she was called L'unite). I haven't included carronades because POTC doesn't allow for more than one type of gun on a single ship.

As for M&C's 'Surprise', while they went for broke in the conversion, Surprise is a 28 gun ship, and Rose (the ship who 'played' her in the movie) is a 24; and also there are fairly significant differences between the two beyond that. . . (take, for example, the unique shape of the headrails and cutwater on my model. . . what you see there is very French and even more specific to L'Unite. . . it just screams 'surprise', and while they tried to give Rose that look for the movie. . . well, apparently it was a more difficult mod than they were willing to do. . .)

As for trying to "enlarge the surprise to make her into one of her larger partner vessels as well, like the HMS Diana a 36 or 38 gun frigate, by adding gun ports to a slightly larger model"

Why do that when I've already made a number of other ships from their own plans? Why have different sizes of one ship?

I've made a 38 on the plans of Boadicea, a 44 on Venus, a Sloop of War and `Brig-of` War, a topsail schooner privateer on Lynx, a 100 gun SOL on Tre Heirarchov, a 74 on Superb, and a number of Merchants. . .

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> Drooooool... More different ships, that's WONDERFUL!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I'm sorry that Inez's utility doesn't seem to work for ships - I was under the impression that it would handle both types of imports, but like I said, I haven't had the time to check it out...

However... Maybe there is a coder here who can help with that. These ships are soooooo great - we need to get them into the game... All your hard work canNOT go to waste! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

about locators on ships - and i'm no modeller, so i may be wrong - i didn't think we needed inez's tool to get them to work in the game. i thought the problem with getting crew to appear on the decks was the 'walk' files, which you would need (unfortunately) to edit manually - they're the files that tell the crew where they can and can't walk on the deck and on the rigging. apparently it's possible but `time-consuming`. however, if you're prepared to do without visible crew on board the ship, it's fine, i think?

I've done HMS Surprise (that's from the original plans).

I've also done a whole bunch of others. They're even in Maya and ready to import (minus locators, obviously).[/quote]

Woot! I can barely wait to get my grubby little piratical hands on those! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Ah I didn't realise about the other ships kewl... can we see some pics?

Right I didn't realise what your plans were based on I thought it was the one after her over haul sorry bout that kewl... Is there any chance you could allow for a mod to have her post over haul as well as original original plans?

regards,

Cap'n Cornish.

P.S. Which of those new ships of yours are British? and what other nations are what for each vessel?

Mmmmmmmmm at last brand new vessels and a 74! Is the Superb like the Renown?

I'm sorry, but I just gotta say this is frustrating...here we have someone with these amazing models but can't get them `in-game`, and we know there are others around who know how to but aren't sharing this knowledge. This bother anyone else? I sure as hell know it bothers me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Sorry for the anger, I'm just a little heated...I'm usually pretty congenial <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />

Don't worry, Kaiser, we'll get it handled... A lot of the folks who know this stuff (the modelers) are away on vacation at the moment, so we're hoping they'll be back soon to give us answers to this...

Please keep me updated on this! I would like to know when this will be available. Could someone please PM me when it is?

Hey, muddmonkey, good to see you back. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I figured they were on vacation...thought I put it in my post but musta left it out <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />

I Just read this and am very pleased with the developments. Even if the locator problem can't be solved for some time, the hard part is certainly making the ships. Keep up the great work Sigma.

I was on vacation too for 2 months. . . <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

We're all guilty of something. . . (in my case, it's dereliction of duty <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> )

@surprise/L'Unite. . . I missed your bit about the gunport. . . actually, yes, I omitted that gunport on purpose, because the gun I would have put there was not a carronade, (and thus not on a recoil slide) and so it would have interfered with the foremast bitts (not enough room).

I also took a number of other liberties; all of them to make her into a POTC game model, and suitable to represent many different ships (rather than just one). Rest assured that the final version is very suitable for POTC.

As for which ones are British and which ones are other nations',

you may know that at this time, it was common practise in all navies to use other navies' captured ships. . . I expect that all these can be retextured a number of times for variety's sake, but in terms of shape, all ships of the Napoleonic period were pretty much the same. (Except the shallow `Dutch-built` buggers). . .

but as for the actual origins of the ships I've made. . .

<img src="http://www.sonoranoise.com/wil/74.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Superb, 74: British built, drafted by Slade, based on the plans of the captured French 'Pompee'. I've taken liberties with this one, to make it more generic.

<img src="http://www.sonoranoise.com/wil/44.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Venus, 40: Swedish, one of the first ever class of 'heavy' 40 gun frigates. (these predate the American heavies) This ship just looks cool. She is ornately carved, and looks more Spanish than anything else.

<img src="http://www.sonoranoise.com/wil/100.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Tre Heirarchov, 100: Russian 1st rate. looks like a generic 1st rate.

<img src="http://www.sonoranoise.com/wil/38.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Boadicea, 38: British. A pretty standard British 18 pounder 'heavy'.

the rest of them are all along these sort of lines. one is American (the little topsail schooner 'Lynx',) and the rest are British. They all look enough like their archetypes that any navy could use them, especially with retexes.

Topsail schooner? Where?
{I'm a schooner man. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> }

Very nice ships, btw. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> {But you darn well should already know that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> }

AFAIK the locators are for putting the models and the rigging together, whereas the walk files are for where poeple go.

My tool in the latest version can import and export locators.

SIGMA6 , the character locators you got on the ship model that's my fault, I was working so much with characters I forgot anything else exists. But they CAN be truned off. And in order to get the ship locators right you have to save them to a file BEFORE exporting to VRML, and read them back in before reimporting to gm.

I'm willing to help with this if necessary.
