Brought back wonderful memories

As the subject says, I bought the dvd version of the game yesterday and was up until 03:00 <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

I for one reckon SM did an excellent job, didn't change to much and the game is a classic and well all I can say is "Arggghhhh!!!!, shiver me timbers"!

Cheers all <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Did you all know this?

Pirates as I remember it first came out on the C64 (now where going back eh?) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I remember going to Adelaide and paying $79.00 back then and then the wife losing the plot because my old C64 was using the portable tv and I was hooked like a fish with a big worm <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Now to really take you back, the game was on the big plastic floppy drives, sorry cannot remember the name, mabye you can help me out, but you used to be able to use both sides of the disk. Again many months were lost in my quest to save my family and capture the silver train (never did manage to complete game even back then) I think from memory it was 1989 I first bought Pirates (I am not sure, bad eh <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> ) but I remember I bought Apache Gunship around the same time. Oh the memories.

I actually kept the map when I sold the C64 as I loved the detail even back then and funny enough, just last night it was excellent to see my 14 year old son get quite excited about wanting to play Pirates. I know I am rambling on but I reckon with out a doubt SM made some excellent classic games and I have owned them all at one stage.

Drink up lads, here's to "Ho Ho Ho and a bottle of rum"!

"Avast ya swabs, Arggghhh!"!

Cheers all <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Last night I pulled out the old "Pirates" for the C64 from 87'. Hardcover booktype box, manual, floppy disk, and map. There's another floppy with all my saved games on it. I suppose both disks have demagnatized by now. Anyway it was a nice trip down memory land. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Ah 1987, I thought I bought Pirates in 89, oh well must of been 87, (see what working in mental health does for you <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" /> )

Cheers

I didn't buy Pirates! at all. I was young and careless, and pirating didn't give me bad counscious, like it does now. However, I bought the original `amiga-version` a couple of years ago, when I came over it - although that wouldn't help Sid Meier much.

I originally tried Pirates! on the C64. My friend had an original, and it was very well protected, so I couldn't copy it. As a replacement, I played Piracy on the Caribbean, I think. But when I got myself an amiga, I copied the `amiga-version`, and I think that's the best version of the old games. It got both the best graphics (even cleaner than in Pirates! Gold on the PC, IMO) and the best sound. This was in 89/90, and played it regularly ever since. There are a lot of games I love that prevents me from leaving the `Amiga-scene` totally, like Lotus II, SWOS, Pirates!, Kick Off 2, Civilization, Colonization, Monkey Island 1 and 2 (excellent sound on the `amiga-version` contra the PC version). And I hate `midi-music`, and emulating an amiga is something that can't be done properly imo. The amiga have a distinct feel that cannot be emulated, it won't work to have my PC pretend it's an amiga.

Anyway, `on-topic`; Sid Meier's Pirates! is a wonderful remake and exactly what I wanted. I'm glad they didn't put too much new stuff in it, and that they kept most of the old things. It has a few flaws, but it's still a quality game and will keep me entertained for years to come, just like the original. I'll probably go back to the original once in a while for that nostalgic feeling, but this remake is all I dreamed for should I want to play a more modern game with classic gameplay. Probably the best remake ever, can't think of many really great remakes. Metal Gear Solid - The Twin Snakes was a very decent remake, but it still lacked some of the things from the original - like the music. It was changed somehow. And the voice of the ninja was very different too. These two remakes are my ideas of what a remake should be.

Now, we'll probably see Sid Meier doing another Pirates! within a couple of years, or maybe an expansion pack or two - to bring the game into the modern gaming world, where the genres are even more blurred out. Every game today tries to tie in a lot of genres, and while most games fail miserably, a lot of them are rather enjoying too.

well said dude

you were spot on 100% correct, I feel same way about this game, SM did well, mind you still can't get that dancing <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

Have you ever tried Amiga emulation? WinUAE and WinFellow work amazingly well, I've been playing Pirates! through WinFellow for years and it plays perfectly, sound, graphics, everthing is as I remembered on the Amiga.

Back OT, I agree with everything said, SMP is a remarkable remake of a classic that is sucking up hours of my time in the same manner as the original did. Just one more ship to attack before bedtime... okay just one more buried treasure before bed... okay just one more dance with the babe so I can get the leather vest before bed...

My tree is sitting half decorated, I haven't done any Christmas shopping this week, all I've done is sail the high seas since buying this game.

Yeah, I know, but I didn't mean as in the technical aspect. I just can't play emulators, it doesn't give me the right feel. If I want to play a game, I want to play it on the original console. I feel like I'm missing something unless I'm playing with a real amiga joystick, starting the game from a real amiga and such. You can't emulate that feel. It's like Coca Cola, you can get a lot of good alternatives, but it's never the same as the real thing.

There is a <b>real Amiga joystick</b>??!? You learn something new every day! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Anyway, I have a digital joystick that was connected to my Amiga somewhere in the attic. You can buy it at a reasonable price. And BTW, I also have some bottles of 12 year old Coke ( I <u>really</u> have, I collected some). Name your price! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

hehe, yeah, thanks but I have amiga joysticks already. Among them are the WICO Bathandle, zipstik and Maverick II. All three excellent amiga joysticks. The amiga shared the same controller ports as Sega Megadrive, C64 and Atari too, so at that time you bought a joystick that fits all. Unlike today.

And the 12 year old Coke? No thanks, I'm not a collector, I'm a consumer, of these drinks.

Hey, you <b>can</b> consume them! And afterwards, ye'll look like this: <img src="http://www.astroalley.com/emoticons/pirateXxP.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

The big floppies from my memory were 5 1/4, but the ones you describe may be even earlier. I do remember playing Pirates! Gold when Sid mad the remake. Think I played that on my 386 with the 40 Meg HD. Remember having to play games in DOS because Windows 3.1 sucked so badly.
That was fun.

Thought I might even have the receipt from that lifechanging day in time. There I was, standing in Toys R Us, looking at one of many game boxes on display there. Best looking box there, called Pirates. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Drooling over the gameplay discription on the back of the box, well I could go on like most of us here. The title page of the manual says "First Edition 1987" and "copywrite 1987" in another spot. It could of been 88 by then. I didn't have a C64 and pondered for many months before that day when I bought it and something called a diskdrive ( my Vic 20 just needed a tape player <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> ) just for Pirates. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
