Build 12 leaders - who are they?

CatalinaThePirate

Unholy Terror,
Storm Modder
Hi all... I wanted to discuss this because it came up in the CVS thread. Who exactly IS in charge of Build 12, if we can call it "in charge"?

So far, this whole Build has been run "by committee", basically, whoever has had a mod, made it themselves or with their team, and we're hoping to collect them up into a Build we can release with cohesive code so it WORKS in PotC...

It was pointed out to me again, although I still have a little difficulty with the concept, that I have become a "big guy" around here... Oh heck, now I was just trying to help people. But it was also pointed out that THAT is the way to build a community - and a community is what we have developed here! And that, hopefully, is a GOOD THING. I can run with that concept! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I'm not suggesting I - or any ONE person - be put in charge of Build 12. I'm not qualified enough, I think, to be in charge. BUT... With help from all of you, I know we can get this thing done and done WELL, release it and be proud of our achievement. (Knute Rockney, where's the Gipper?) (haha!)

So I'd like to suggest - as has been suggested by others - that we still operate as a committee... Some of us are stronger in some areas than others, so we can work together and get the job done right.

IMHO, there are a few of us who are driving this bus - me, Kieron, Sirus_Darke, DCHaley, iamthejarha, and NathanKell. Screwface too, if he is interested and has the time... AND I think we have someone else who might also be pitching in (I hope), and that's Mad Jack... I'm hoping to hear he will be able to help us with an installer...

Is there anyone else who "wants in" on this? Have I missed anyone who feels qualified to fiddle about in the code and bring this project to release?

This is NOT deciding what mods get in, IMO, we should get as many in as we can (but that's only my opinion and it's not decided yet) - this is the list of the fools ...err... the CODERS <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> who will help get Build 12 to the release point once we hit our deadline and stop accepting mods for this build.

Of course, now, this may all be a lot of "hot air" (can we have hot air on a computer forum?) - maybe uncharged electrons or something - heh... Anyhow, I'd like some input here. What do you think? What should we do? Does anyone have other ideas? Let's hear 'em. Nothing I've said is set in stone - it's up for discussion.

Tell everyone what you'd like to see here, and we'll go from there. THANKS! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

For what it's worth I strongly recommend having one or more people be in charge of quality control. The reasoning here is that while CVS makes it very convenient for a group of people to edit one codebase, it also makes everybody highly dependent on their peers - if one person checks something in that doesn't work, everybody suffers from it. Now I'm not saying that anybody here does shoddy work, quite the contrary things are great, so maybe this isn't an issue at all. I've just found that it's very useful to have a procedure for determining what goes in and what doesn't - and that could be a project leader(s), or as simple as a vote count in the community. Just have something written down, is all. As projects tend to grow they tend to need more management as more and more developers start bumping into each other. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

As for my position, I'm just the sysadmin here. I will give write access to whomever the community tells me to. I guess you could think of me as the ghost in the shell. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Sounds great! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I feel like I've been invited to sit at the `grown-up`'s table for Thanksgiving. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

It sound good to me... but me as a bus driver on B12? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I'm certainly not a driver, I'm more like the fat kid at the back that shouts out instults to the driver <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

All that can I do at the moment is spend a few minutes or an hour as and when I can trying to see if I can work out how some of the code works.

go `ca-at`! go `ca-at`! go! go! go `ca-at`! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />

I would be interested to bring my help in this project and i have some free time to do that. I hope only that some knowledge that I have of the POTC code will be enough to do that.

Thank you for invitation Cat <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Wonderful, Screwface! That would be great!

Our POOLED knowledge makes us stronger... This is good.

David makes the point that there should be someone who is quality control - preferably someone `well-versed` in the code and who can debug quickly... I think that's a very good suggestion. Does anyone wish to snatch up this job (in his greedy little coding fingers)? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Quite frankly I think the strongest attributes I can bring to this table are organization and encouragement - I am *not* a coder by any means, and while I might help with some of this code in my own feeble way, I truly feel like I *should* take a backseat to the "real coders" here...

Sirus, I'm sitting next to you on the bus, and we can both shout insults at the bus driver... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

First, I'm honored by your including me, especially after my prolonged absence.

But I do want to make clear that while I'd like to be _part_ of things, I can only be a relatively minor part.

I would also like to make a plug for _non_ coders to be intimately associated with trying to get build(s) ready for release (let alone dealing with the build(s) in general!)
Different perspectives are vital, and I'm certainly always surprised (and often ashamed too) how much I (as a coder) overlook. So JMV, it has to be _more_ than coders {and you certainly fit the bill here IMO. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> When you get your housing stuff settled, of course.}

And, especially in terms of getting a pack ready for release, one truly vital area is documentation.
Documentation that _anyone_ who tries to use the mod can understand.
I don't get out of the POTC area much, so I don't get to read many other posters' articles. But I'm sure we have a number of talented writers here (though writing docs is a good bit different from writing "normal" stuff of course) and I hope some would be interested.
Sirus_Darke (though you've already been drafted anyway. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> )
Fred Bob? (ISTR the gunboat install explanation was both funny _and_ very informative)
Sir Christopher? (Ditto a number of his explanations)
Others?

Sailor Al contributed wonderfully in that regard; he's rather busy ATM I believe but if he'd be willing that'd be great.

Those are good suggestions, Nathan, and you are soooo right, we DO need some writers to put together a good readme - something entertaining that people will actually READ instead of ignore.

I would love to see Sailor Al contribute to this (more than he has with his excellent suggestions and assistance to those of us actively modding now). <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

And about YOU being included on that list? Heck... We need someone with *experience* here, someone who's been involved in past build releases... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Make no mistake, you belong, and it is WE who should be honored if you would spend even a few moments in assistance... Even if it's only SUGGESTIONS, Nathan, you're GOOD... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2up" border="0" alt="thumbs1.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />
Thank you.
I'll still feel very honored being part of this though. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Are we okay with this list? It doesn't mean we can't add more as time goes on, but we're going to be concerned with who gets access to the CVS server.

We have:

Screwface
NathanKell
CatalinaThePirate
Kieron
Sirus_Darke
iamthejarha
dchaley

And I'm going to PM Sir Christopher, Mad Jack, Fred Bob, and Sailor Al, to see if they are interested in joining in this venture.

Anyone else want in, or out? Any further suggestions? What about CouchCaptainCharles? And no one has heard from Scheffnow or Mehrunes yet?
