Build 14 Alpha 8

Pieter Boelen

It's been a long time since the last real Alpha, but I am pleased to announce that Build 14 Alpha 8 is finished and available for download.
As per usual, there's a fair amount of bugs in there, but hopefully the amazing new features make up for that.
Personally I even found this version to be pretty playable.
I made sure this would be an easy install so that anyone would be able to test this one. Enjoy! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

There have been so many additions in this latest update that we haven't been able to keep up with them all.
Eventually there will be a full feature list for Build 14, but for now you'll have to do with this:
An incomplete feature list showing the main additions since Build 14 Alpha 7.

The unrealistic island and town names from the original game are finally a thing of the past.
All stock game islands and towns have been renamed to existing islands and towns.
Additionally there is four new islands and four new towns.

[attachment=1959:Screenshot2.jpg]

To help you get used to this, below is a full list of all the changes.
Original names are between [ these things ] . <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

<b>Island:</b> Jamaica [Redmond]
<b>Town:</b> Port Royale [Redmond]

<b>Island:</b> Barbados [Oxbay]
<b>Town 1:</b> Speightstown [Oxbay]
<b>Town 2:</b> Bridgetown [Greenford]

<b>Island:</b> Bonaire [Douwesen]
<b>Town:</b> Kralendijk [Douwesen]

<b>Island:</b> Martinique [Falaise de Fleur]
<b>Town:</b> Saint Pierre [Falaise de Fleur]

<b>Island:</b> Granada [Conceicao]
<b>Town:</b> São Jorge [Conceicao]

<b>Island:</b> Nevis [Quebradas Costillas]
<b>Town 1:</b> Charlestown [NEW!]
<b>Town 2:</b> Pirate Settlement [Quebradas Costillas]

<b>Island:</b> Cozumel [Khael Roa]

<b>Island:</b> Aruba [NEW!]
<b>Town:</b> Oranjestad [NEW!]

<b>Island:</b> Curacao [NEW!]
<b>Town:</b> Willemstad [NEW!]

<b>Island:</b> Eleuthera [NEW!]
<b>Town:</b> Governor's Harbour [NEW!]

<b>Island:</b> Isla de Muerte [NEW!]
<i>Can only be found if you have Jack Sparrow's compass.
However, there is currently no ingame way to get it.
This island will be used during the CotBP quest, which is pretty much finished, but not included here</i>

For those people who prefer the old names, this mod can be turned off in the Advanced Options menu (see below).

<!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><i><b>Capture Colonies</b></i><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
<i><b>By:</b> Pirate_KK</i>
It has been requested ever since the stock game and FINALLY it is possible!
After fighting a fort, you will now fight the town as well.
Once the fight is over, you will have a talk with the govenor about the surrender of the town.
In this talk you can ransom the town for a lot of gold,
but you can also give the town to another nation or even take it for yourself.

If you take the town for yourself, you must assign an officer as governor and one as fort commander.
By clicking on the town name in the Capture Colony interface, you can even rename the town.
Your own soldiers will appear in the town and will defend you.
You can even get tax income from the towns you own.

This mod works, but the personal soldier and governor dialogs are unfinished.
Also there is hardly any colony management as of yet.

<!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><i><b>Selectable Storylines</b></i><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
<i><b>By:</b> Pirate_KK</i>
The "Selectable Storylines" interface replaces the "Choose Character" interface from Build 13.
This interface allows you to choose from various <i>all new</i> main quests, all set in different time periods!
[attachment=1962:Screenshot5.jpg]

The "Selectable Storylines" interface does give you less freedom in customizing your character than the Build 13 interface did.
However, a "Customize Character" interface will be made for Build 14 giving you the choice to tweak your character to your liking.
Right now the following storylines are available:

<b>Standard Storyline</b> by <i>Akella</i>
This is the original main quest from the stock game, pretty much as it was before.
However, a whole bunch of interesting side quests have been added by <i>Bartolomeu o Portugues</i>.
Work on this quest is finished.

<b>Bartolomeu o Portugues</b> by <i>Bartolomeu o Portugues</i>
This main quest follows the story of famous pirate Bartolomeu o Portugues.
Work on this quest is finished.

<b>Blaze Devlin</b> by <i>Short Jack Gold</i>
In this quest you will search for your long-lost sister and a grand treasure.
Several colourful characters will help you on your quest.
These characters are based on members of our esteemed modding team.
The beginning of this quest has been made, but this is still far from being finished.

[attachment=1960:Screenshot3.jpg]

<b>Devlin Opera</b> by <i>Short Jack Gold</i>
This quest is basically the same as the Blaze Devlin quest,
except now you play Beatrice and you're in search of your long-lost brother.
The beginning of this quest has been made, but this is still far from being finished.
It is less complete than the Blaze Devlin quest.

<b>Horatio Hornblower</b> by <i>Short Jack Gold</i>
In this quest you can join the British Royal Navy as a midshipman.
Right now only the beginning scenes have been made.

<b>The Legend of Jack Sparrow</b> by <i>Short Jack Gold</i>
This quest allows you to play the early days of Jack Sparrow.
Right now only the beginning is included.
However a big part of it is finished, including the complete Curse of the Black Pearl film quest.
This has not yet been added though.

<b>Master and Commander</b> by <i>Pieter Boelen</i>
This is merely a test-quest made by me for quickly testing Eleuthera.
I needed this for developing the United States of America in the game.
See below for more information.

<!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><i><b>Periods</b></i><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
<i><b>By:</b> Pirate_KK, Thomas the Terror and Pieter Boelen</i>
Depending on the starting year of the selected storyline, the game will be set in a different time period.
There will be different ships sailing the seas depending on the time period.
Also the look of the nations' soldier models will change depending on the time period.
The United States of America even appear in the last two periods.

Additionally each nation uses it's own specific ships. Some ships are used by all nations, but each nation has a preference for certain types.
Also ships that obviously belong to a certain nation are not used by other nations.

We have the following periods available:
<b>Early Explorers</b>:1500 till 1599
<b>The Spanish Main:</b> 1600 till 1679
<b>Golden Age of Piracy:</b> 1680 till 1739
<b>Colonial Powers:</b> 1740 till 1769
<b>Revolutions:</b> 1770 till 1789
<b>The Corsican:</b> 1790 till 1820

Right now the relations between the nations are the same in each period, but for the next version we will have realistic relations set up.

In the last two periods, the United States of America take over the island of Eleuthera.

[attachment=1963:Screenshot6.jpg] [attachment=1964:Screenshot7.jpg]

Also US ships will appear on the worldmap and you will find US soldiers and navy officers in Eleuthera port.
The US are at war with England.

<i><b>By:</b> Thomas the Terror, Pirate_KK, Kazeite, Seb, Captain Patrick, Sir Christopher Mings, SuperDurnius, yo ho ho and damski62</i>
As per usual, dozens of new character and ship models have been added.
Amongst the ships are the HMS Interceptor as well as a lot of nation-specific ones.
For the characters there are now several sets of soldier skins for the various nations and time periods, as well as navy officer skins for some of the nations.
Additionally there are special skins for character in the Bartolomeu o Portugues main quest.
And several of the modders in the Devlin quests also have their own unique model.

[attachment=1961:Screenshot4.jpg] [attachment=1965:Screenshot8.jpg]

As far as location-work is concerned, the towns on the new islands now all look different from the stock game towns.
All towns are reskinned and some towns even have had their model changed.

Ahoy Pieter!
I have a question and an observation:
Does this latest Alpha have the option of playing as your own character in a plot-free game or is one locked into one of the quests? (Stupid question, I know, but just checking.)
Also... I noticed that the Master and Commander quest is the one being used to expose players to the American Revolution. Since Hornblower and Aubrey are actually of the same time period, I would keep one of them (or make both an option for the same time period if its possible). Once we get the USA working, I think it would be interesting to expose the player to the Revolution <i>as</i> an American fighting the British. It would be a more challenging quest, as the odds are extremely lopsided and the American player wouldn't have any large ships or numbers of ships at their disposal. This would also showcase our addition of the Americans to a greater extent... and besides, there are quests for the British, Spanish, French... why not include the USA instead of simply "adding a new enemy and more ships to sink"?

Good Idea A War with the British V American and the plot-free game guseing some thing like Sid Masters Pirates where you make a character and TimePeriod Nationalaty

Actually, since most quests aren't finished yet, you'll need to find something else to do anyway. You're as free to do as you wish as you ever were.
The Hornblower quest only has an opening scene and after that you're free to do as you please. The Master and Commander quest doesn't even have that and allows you to do what you want right from the beginning.
We did lose the "Choose Character" interface (not voluntary, I assure you!) for the time being, so you will need to select one of the pre-defined quests. However it's really easy to change your starting model and ship manually in the code. Eventually there will be a new interface for tweaking your character.

When you select that quest, you look like Jack Aubrey and you command the HMS Surprise and you start out straight on USA Eleuthera. The sole purpose in me adding this "quest" was so that I could quickly have a look at Eleuthera in American times.

That is provided that somebody actually starts work on a REAL Master and Commander quest. Setting both in the same time period is also a possibility.

Right now we're just working on getting the USA working properly in the game code-wise, but once that's tackled, we need to move on to the next step: actually giving them a purpose. This would mean actually using them in some quests, adding some special USA-only things on Eleuthera and perhaps even a US main quest. As far as quests are concerned, everything is possible. Somebody just has to make it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

BTW: What do you mean by "quests for the British, Spanish, French"? Most quests are decidedly British-oriented. The sole exception is the Portuguese Bartolomeu o Portugues quest. It would be great if there would be more variety in the available quests so that each nation would at least get a quest to it's own. But this all depends on what the quest-writers actually want to work on. For now, I'd be more than happy if we got the Jack Sparrow quest finished. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Well, here's an idea for the next big project once B14A8 is finished... we give each nation a specific quest.
Each time period's theme matches a nation, so I'd try to make each period's quest match the national theme. The exception would be The Corsican, as that time period is known as the RN's climax. The French quest could be played during the Seven Years War in "Colonial Powers".
There would be an issue of making a quest for every nation. For example:
Early Explorers: Portugese quest.
The Spanish Main: Spanish quest.
Golden Age of Piracy: Pirate quest.
Colonial Powers: French quest.
Revolutions: American quest.
The Corsican: British quest.
Where's Holland's quest? This could be solved by adding multiple quests to a single period in the future. A VOC quest perhaps? That could showcase the <i>Amsterdam</i> and make Captain Pieter Boelen a major character... *wink* We could also add quests that would allow players to choose from either side of the war; what if someone wanted to play as the British and put "those rebellious colonials" back in line or what if someone wanted to fight the British for their beloved Emperor Bonaparte?

I think that one of the biggest advantages of being an American would be the quality of ships and offcers. While other ships are good, American-built vessels could have that extra edge over other nation's vessels that gives the USA a purpose. Afterall... that was one of the largest concerns of other world powers once America stepped onto the world stage. Our superfrigates were almost unbeatable, especially due to the heart and soul of our crews and officers. Figures such as John Paul Jones and Stephen Decatur were some of the boldest and most daring officers of the age, and when given a well-built ship... that made quite a problem for America's enemies. So, I would make American ship's stats better than other nations and would give American characters higher reputations, more skill points, and more expierence. They need to be some of the best sailors, navigators, and leaders around... (and though Americans were often more accurate gunners, I'd let the British have better gunnery skills because they could reload so quickly.) The downside of high quality is a higher price. The American Treasury certainly felt the difference in their wallet after paying for the six frigates. So I'd make American ships and officers cost the players more money.

Although America and Britain were not at war for some thirty years after the Revolution, I'd keep England as America's enemy for both periods for the War of 1812's sake. I'd also add France as an enemy in The Corsican to simulate the Quasi War. This could test how well a player can adjust to another nation becoming a threat. Pirates would also change from ally to enemy after Revolutions because one of the biggest reasons the USA founded its Navy was the problem with the Barbary Pirates.

So does this sound like a good goal for B14A9?

Pesonally i dislike limiting sides to certain era's, that would be limiting ones freedom of choice even more now that we for the time being unfortunatley have lost the character customization.(Personally i preferr the custom character freedom over the quest selections really)

What i would really want to see is a non-linear setup a la Pirates of the burning sea, with missions that you can take.

Indeed... I prefer non-linear gameplay too.
But I would still suggest making multiple quests so everyone's happy in addition to bringing back the customizable character option.

There should be some king of sandbox or free mode where you choose what nation you want to be with, what period, etc where the only quests you do is hunting pirate, merchant, etc. Off course this is just an idea
