Build 14 Alpha Work in Progress

Pieter Boelen

Storm Modder
Hearts of Oak Donator
Today I started work on the Build 14 Alpha version that will be the modpack that will include the new mods not in Build 13. Perhaps some of the mods will make their way into a Build 13 update, but mostly this will go into Build 14. This thread will be the place to discuss the progress on the Build 14 Alpha modpack.

One small request: I would like to keep the discussion in this thread to-the-point, so please don't go posting random ideas for new mods. If you post something, you have to be SURE that it actually IS possible. Or at least that there is a chance that it is possible. Also: Requests like "new quests" and "new locations" don't really help. To quote Captain Barbossa: "We've heard that one. Anything else?"

As far as the current work on the Build 14 Alpha modpack goes: I haven't had much luck so far. Today I made the new package and I thought the code was OK, but when I put it on top of Build 13, the game wouldn't run anymore and it wouldn't even give me an error.log file or any other log file to point me in the right direction as to why it's not working. This means that I won't be able to release the pack today, as I had wanted to do, but it'll have to wait until next weekend at the earliest. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

<b>Stuff that will be included in the first Build 14 Alpha version:</b>
- Retextured Greenford in Spanish style for Santo Domingo (by Swindler)
- Free walk on ship mod (by Pirate_KK)
- Proper tutorial cabin mod (By Pirate_KK)
- Realistic health items (by Duncan; added by Pieter Boelen)
- Realistic Ship Purchase (original idea by Duncan; mod made by Pieter Boelen)
- Tavern gamble game (by Maximus)

And some other stuff I have forgotten at the moment. I am NOT including Maximus' hire enemy captain as companion mod, just in case I mess up in adding that mod. I have asked Maximus to put all his finished mods together in one Build 13 compatible package so they can be tested.

Wow! That is quite an ambitious release you are planning Pieter! I know there was also a new quest to be put in made by Bartholomew, has that been completed? Perhaps he could comment on his progress. It did sound like an excellent quest! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

It's on the FTP, but I haven't started on putting it in yet. Currently I'm just trying to get my Post Build 13 pack that I have had on my HD for quite a while to work properly. After I released that, I can try to work on adding more mods still.

It's working better than it did previously: The game at least starts now. But when I start a new game, I keep having a black screen. Error.log says:
RUNTIME ERROR - file: interface\character.c; line: 449
missed attribute: shipberthing

I have now tried to install Pirate_KK's free walk on ship folders straight on top of Build 13 and that actually does work. However, it resets the game version to a version before the Build 13 final release, so it excludes a lot of fixes and some other stuff. So I am going to try to put all Build 13 content back in and see if I can keep the game from crashing while doing so. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Good news: I got it to work. The reason why it wasn't working was because I removed some superfluous code from seadogs.c but removed the wrong }. I rectified that now and it works! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Ehm. That is to say: The game starts and runs. It is not exactly bugfree though. My merge still isn't 100% in proper working order. But at least it runs. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Don't worry. I'll release something including that mod this weekend.

The first Build 14 Alpha version is now released and available from the new <a href="http://pieter.piratesahoy.org/b14_alpha.htm" target="_blank">Build 14 Alpha</a> page on my website. On this page you will also find installation instructions and the feature list. This modpack does work, but it is NOT guaranteed to work properly. Actually, I guarantee that it DOESN't work properly. That is why it needs to be tested and bugfixed.

In any case: I hope you will enjoy this modpack. I reckon it contains quite a lot of nice new features to occupy you people this week. Please post comments in this thread. Bug reports and bug fixes can best be posted on the <a href="http://swankyplace.com/potcbugs" target="_blank">Bug Tracker</a>.

Just to let you know: I will be leaving later today and I won't return until Friday because of a training for school. So best wishes to you all and have fun with the Build 14 Alpha this week. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

i'll wait until this version is made stable. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> as long as it doesn't take another two years! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

This version does work properly. I have not encountered any bad bugs so far. But I haven't tested it thoroughly either. But I expect you don't have HD space to install it anyway. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

i have 739 MB free at the moment, so i don't think that's a problem. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> besides, i can free the space up after installing anyway. unless this version includes build 13. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

ok, i've looked at the guide, and i can install it by the looks of it. the added features sound great! naturally, i'll report any bugs i find here.

It seemed that there were several problems with the original Build 14 Alpha version, so thanks to Jonathan Aldridge, CouchcaptainCharles and several other people, I have now been able to compile an update containing a whole bunch of fixes that should make the game work much better.

<a href="http://www.s31clan.com/pietersmods/b14_alpha2_update.zip" target="_blank">Download</a> (5,44 MB)
To install: Simply put it on top of your current Build 14 Alpha version.

HA! already had it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> but still, are there new fixes added since 9 december? as that is the latest update that i have.

The file I just posted contains ALL recent fixes, including CCC's ones, Jonathan Aldridge's ones and several others. The BuildingSet should also be in proper working order again. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I updated my website; now both the full update Build 14 Alpha 2 and the update for it are available.

Why do I get the feeling that Build 13 has been orphaned?

build 14 was released to quick i guess. build 14 alpha should have been named build 13.1. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> the name build 13 is now basically useless.

I'm still with it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

What do you want me to do about it? In some time I will make an update for Build 13 including all latest fixes from the Build 14 Alpha version. I can't call the Build 14 Alpha "Build 13.1", because it's not stable. My original intent was to add all Build 14 Alpha mods that are CONFIRMED stable in an update for Build 13 for those people who want to have a stable game. That way there'd be two game versions:
1) Build 13 + Updates: This is the stable game version, but with the updates it does include all new features that are confirmed working.
2) Build 14 Alpha: This contains just about all new stuff, whether it is stable or not. This is meant exclusively for testing.

The problem with that idea is that no new features have, so far, been confirmed working. Probably because the game testers aren't focusing on confirming mods to be working. So that way new features will not be added to Build 13 updates. Bugfixes will be added to a Build 13 in some time, but it depends on when I have time to make one. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
