Calico Jack Rackham

Walter Kennedy

Bandit Of Barbados
Storm Modder
John Rackham Alias Calico Jack started his pirate career sailing with the feared Charles Vane who fled Providence and attacked a naval ship following the arrival of Woodes Rogers who came to give Royal Pardons to any pyrate that surrendered. Jack's Career rised when Vane refused to attack a large French Frigate, though Vane didnt want to attack it Jack did, stating it was probally filled with plenty of riches and stores to make them very powerful, Vane objected and they fled. Soon after this Rackham held a council Of war to take a vote to vote Vane out, 15 stood loyal to vane while the rest with Jack. Jack gave Vane a small sloop with his share of goods, ammunitions, equpiment, guns, spare rope and food and drink. After this they departed and Jack in his vessel plundered many fishing vessels and local merchantman, mostly sloops, schooners etc. To which after they went ashore at a Bahama Island and cleaned their sloop and took a vessel filled with Theives bound for Newgate, But when a english man o war was spotted he left the cargo of theives and hastly took the stores and liqour and sailed away before the Man O war reached him.

Calico Jack and his comrades the sailed to Cuba abd spent christmas ashore, wenching, drinking as log as they had any rum and celebrated, carouzed and once more cleaned their sloop. Though they reached the Bahamas again- Jack took the pardon and for a while settled until he met one lass- Anne Bonney a said to be attractive and young girl who fled N. Carolina with her husband. Jack fell head over heels with Bonney and could not stand a life without her, Bonney fell in love with them too and in time they were engaged but Anne's old husband found out of this news and reported Bonney to Woodes Rogers who threatend to have her flogged for Adultery, Seeing the only easy way out was to turn pirate Bonney, Jack and 11 men fled Providence.

The William was her name- a sloop of 4 guns and greatily equiped with food and spare equipment, and a small canoe as a tnder to carry out supplies or goods from shore or from the boat. Calico Jack and Bonney and 11 friends stole this small 12 ton sloop with the design of going on account. Though Bonney was soon Preganant with Jack's child, Jack wanting her and his child to be safe at a time of this, he and Bonney went to his good cuban family and left her in the care of them until her child was born and she was up and about. When she was Jack sent for her and they pursued their designs.

Calico Jack and bonney took several prizes- a merchant schooner laden with fish and other cargo, several fishing vessels, a sloop with english goods and small coastal river shallops and sloops with goods and liqour. Soon they came upon a dutch schooner where they found Mary Read- dressed as a man weilding a sword not willing to surrender her life.

Let me tell you a bit about Mary Read- she was born to a poor mother who had hoped for a boy so she could persuade her rich mother to help care for her child. When Mary was born as seen a girl she was devestated fearing she could not afford her education, a home or food she dressed Mary up as a boy and fooled her grandmother into providing money for Mary's care. Mary tired of this life she decided to become a soldier and acted every bit like one until she came upon a young man who Mary fell in love with. They shared the same tent so it was easy for Mary to show her breasts to the young man there by exposing her secret. Having found out this The Young man fell in love with her and in time they married- they opened up a tavern and things were looking great. That was until her husband died of illness- leaving Mary to close up the tavern and go back to sea dressed as a man.

After agreeing to join- Mary proved to be a excellent sailor, fighter and all-in-all a good pirate. So much as Anne fell in love with Mary: believing her to be a man, when Mary found out of this she quickly exposed herself leaving Anne dissapointed but with a new friend. Jack was too let into the secret to avoid anymore confusion.
They took more coastal vessels, fishing vessels and merchantman taking money, fish, regular cargo, clothing, weapons, shot etc.

These pirates proved to be excellent pirates- unstoppable really until after anchoring at the west point of Jamaica after heavy drinking- a large heavily armed sloop with I think 100 men spotted the pirates and went after them- Jack was not afraid at first and when The Captain Jonathon Barnet demanded to know who they were, where they came from and if they were pirates- Jack answered with a shot from his swivel gun and yelled " John Rackham- From Cuba!" After this he endeavored to flee until Barnet's sloop took out Jack's Boom therefore disabling his sloop. Jack seeing this accepted his fate and hid and drank below decks. Anne and Mary fought till they couldnt fight anymore- swearing excessvly, firing their pistols and killing. Though they were overpowered and soon prisoner.

The pirates were now prisoners in Jamaica awaiting a trial the executed Prisoners were:

John Rackham, captain
George Fetcherson, master
Richard Corner, quartermaster
John Davis
John Howell
Patrick Carty
Thomas Earl
James Dobbin
Noah Hartwood

All were executed after standing trial under Judge Nicholas Laws of Jamaica. Anne and Mary escaped the noose by claiming to be preganant- when it was announced true- Laws cancelled the execution until their children were safetly born- Unfortunaley Mary died while giving birth- most likely fever. What happend to Anne is a huge mystery there is no more documents about what happend to or her child. It is believed by many historians since Anne's father was a succesful and rich and powerful man he left N. Caroliana and paid the officials greately to set her free.

Notes: Jack Rackham was never reported to be cruel- even on a jamaican bartender: Hosea Tisdale in which Rackham sent Hosea on a merchantman bound for his home. Rackham was given his nickname due to him wearing colorful flashy calico coat and clothing. When rackhsm was sentenced to death he asked for only one thing to see Anne- his wish was granted but he did not get the kind of love he thought he would instead of I love you, or we'll always be together- Anne replied: " Had you fought like a man, you neednt hanged like a dog". Barbossa uses Calico Jack's skull and swords in POTC 3.
