Canon Type

A random question, more out of curiosity than anything. I was just woundering which canon type you used and why.

I tend to buy canon's rather than culverin's because i would rather have the power of the shot as a pose to the range on my side, also it takes less time to reload the canon's and the shot types weigh less than those for the culverin's. While on small ships i like to have the range on my side because that way i can hit and run or as most often is the case be hitting whilst on the run, but in ships from class 4 upwards i only use canon's.

So like the question states which canon type do you use and why?

Always cannon here. Firepower and reload speed is what counts for me.
I barely hit anything at medium to long range anyways, so what's the point extending the range even more...

Exactly. I prefer to fire at point blank range anyway, so cannons all the way for me as well.

If you want to get even more specific I usually prefer 24lb cannons, it seems to be the best tradeoff for dmg, range, and reload speed.

You want to board them, not sink them from afar -> fast few buckshots and board -> cannons.

Though there is something to be said for a light range increase for the buckshots that allow you to hit without the danger of being grappled too soon.

I prefer cannons. Culverines are useless. 100m don't justify the weight, the long reloading time and the weaker damage of those things. All my ships have cannons and the Manowar even has the 42lb monsters.

i use culverines for fast small to medium ships but for larger ones cannon is best.but i do hope someone can make a mod that can allow us to install cannons or one side and culverines on the other.... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

EDIT: btw does anybody know how to get 46 lbs cannons?same with the ones on morgan's frigate?

46lb? Do they exist? I know that the Manowar can use the 42lb cannons and some forts seem to have 48lb cannons (Ouch!).

i've only seen the 46 lbs once when in a mission with morgan to attack belize.i looked up his ship when he joined me and i saw his frigate has 46 lbs.got me puzzled too that would be a fine improvement on my MoW ^^ if ever it does exist

Sticking to cannons, since Culverins are a waste.

One question though, on multi-decked ships (man-of-war) can we specify/arm different gun weights per deck?

It would be nice for immersion purposes, and practicality also as you don't want a top heavy gun deck.

Going to guess that isn't the case but it doesn't hurt asking

You guessed correctly. The game's ship physics couldn't really handle that anyway, it's not really possible to capsize a ship at all or anything. Hopefully the next installment will be more detailed and realistic in this respect.

confirming your guess. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> you can only equip 1 type of cannon/culverine

Bummer!

Oh well, can't say I was surprised lol

Coming from PotBS, I think I'll stay at 36lbs for my man-o-war when I get one.

I owned a 2nd rate over there, 24lb main deck, 18lb second deck, 14lb top deck.

She was a beauty!

I have to start doing some retexturing. PotBS models and textures got me spoiled, the ones in this game hurt my eyes now lol

Well I never expected to be able to mount different guns on different decks, but I was hoping I could mount different types on different sides. Like culverines in the front and back, for extra range when chasing ships, and cannons on the sides for maximum firepower in a close up battle.
Oh well.

maybe they can make a mod which allows it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I believe that is something we will eventually be able to mod in.

And love both gun types depending on what I'm trying to do, but usually use cannon since they seem to have plenty of range anyhow.

Cap'n Drow

i usually use culverines before for the range but when i tried cannons even in small fast ships like the blue bird i liked it more, the fast reloading and getting up close and personal to give them ships a taste of my broad side makes it a lot more exciting and realistic too.

Canons, the bigger the better! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

Always for cannons, the range difference between the same caliber cannons and culverines is not justified, and cannons reload faster with more punch... and the 32lbs for my Wadog or Arabella, get close and discharge both broadsides and you can sink class 2 vessels if you achieve some critics, awesome punch adn sometime too devastating.
