Solved Can't change crew uniform

Eskhol

Sailor Apprentice
Hello,

First I would like to thank you for your great work on this game, it makes me want to play it over and over again even 13 years after its release, and it keeps getting better. You guys are awesome!:cheers

My question is:
I just started a new game on free play as Beatrice Devlin and after a while I bought a Letter or Marque from Britain. I read on an older post that if you buy one, your crew will automatically change the uniform to the nation's specific but it didn't. Do I have to do something else? Or does this only work if you are in the navy and not a privateer?

Thank you :)

Your crew is here the people on your ship not your officers.
Are these also not changing?

Yes, by crew I mean the crew on my ship, not my officers. When boarding or just going around the ship, they still have the normal clothes.

Hi Eskhol,

The uniforms for privateer sailors were removed, Here is the thread discussing and deciding this : Included in Build - Distinguish between different playstyles | PiratesAhoy! (it is also part of the build 14 beta 3.5 internal wip changelog)

It must have been an older thread you found, but your guess is correct--you need to actually be in the navy for uniforms to change, privateer won't work.

Good luck with your campaign! :)

Hi Tingyun,

Oh that's a shame, it makes sense though.

The post I read was from 2014 so it was pretty old.

Thanks for the help to both of you! :)

Glad to help! Stop by and discuss how your campaign is going from time to time, it would be fun to hear about what you are discovering and how the game is going! :)

Sure! For now I'm just a normal English captain doing missions here and there and looking for more powerful French/Spanish ships to steal :pirates

Last encounter was with a French scratch patrol with 3 1st rate (one of them was the Soleil Royal, which I really want to capture) and some other big ships plus a storm and some good old lighting on my ship! I don't even know how I got out of there alive, I couldn't see anything, just the explosions when they were shooting at me. I was lucky enough to have my mast still in one piece, otherwise I would be shark food now.
My ship is a Kreyser Class Frigate and one of my officers has a Heavy East Indiaman. I'm also looking for a Centaure 3rd rate ship of the line to capture, I love that ship!

What about you? Are you playing a main quest or free play? :)

Interesting! Definitely looking forward to more updates, sounds like an exciting campaign.

My own is decidely less interesting so far. You see, I am very new to the game, just discovered it actually. And I have no knowledge of sailing. So I decided to start as a freeplay castaway, which would allow me to sort of ease into the game by focussing on land stuff while I learn how things work, and then tackle the sailing aspects once I have a handle on the other aspects of the game. Land stuff is mostly familiar to me because of playing other RPGS, so it seemed sensible to learn the game first in a familiar enviorment.

My current castaway campaign began on barbados, and I spent several days huntings bandits and natives in the jungle, always at night (and plenty of monkeys too), and sleeping the days away in the tavern. Mostly solo, with a good quatermaster I hired to help me fetch a good price for the loot and left in town, and then later a tiny bit of hunting with some officers I hired to get them a couple of levels. I killed several hundred bandits in the jungle alone, and some more in the barbados cave and spreightown dungeon, and lately have been assaulting the crypts under the maltese abbey. Had saved about 150,000 gold towards my first ship from the jungle hunting (decided not to keep the gold from the maltese abbey, since it is calibrated to be unfairly much, so I only count the jungle gold), and got some nice weapons from the crypts. I'm going back to the crypts one last time to find the remaining buried treasure today, and then I'll cash out my loan shark accounts and buy my first ship.

Do you have any recommendations on what kind of ship I should purchase? The shipyards on barbados seem to primarily have a mix of luggers, barks, and sloops, 8th and 7th rate mostly. I definitally want to keep it small for my first ship, and most of all would like to get something easy to handle, very fast, and not too powerful. My budget is anything under 200,000 I would say, but I wouldn't mind buying a cheap ship like a lugger to learn at first to learn with. I'd like to experience all aspects of the game, including having a smaller ship, though maybe a bark or sloop would be that anyway. ;)

What are your thoughts on those options for my first learner ship? I was intending to pick the one with the highest top speed, so I can run away safely, but maybe there are more things that I should consider like rigging style? Not sure if that is a big difference for sloops, barks, luggers?

Also, do you think the upgrades are worth paying for? Any other advice for someone just about to set out to sea? I know the controls from practicing in my starting Dinghy lifeboat, but my knowledge is limited to what button turns the ship. :)

Oh but that's now, when I started the game it was very different!

The beginning was very slow as combat is difficult and you can't go and kill everyone so I did a lot of missions (trader missions and escorting). After a while I bought a new ship to transport a lot of cargo because I found a good trading route from Hispaniola to Martinique I think. I loaded the entire ship full of gold and sold everything, including the ship at Martinique. Got myself around 500k after all the missions and the trading. Then I bought a Letter of Marque from Britain and stared sinking Spanish and French ships or capturing them.

I should also go to the islands more and explore!

Do you have any recommendations on what kind of ship I should purchase?

It depends on what your playing style is. I usually go with the ones that have a lot of crew and are fast. Some sloops are good so I suggest one of those, just compare them and see what is best for you. You should keep in mind the speed all the time when you're small because sometimes you will have to run from pirates or other nations and need a fast ship.
I usually don't buy ships but capture them instead but when you're starting it's very difficult to capture an enemy ship. Maybe try and capture something smaller when you have a another ship and use it as cargo hauler. When in combat just order him to sail away and you can do all the combat. Trading is an easy way of earning a ton of money.

If you actually want to try and capture another ship, try and break their sails as much as you can and stay behind them so they can't broadside you till they are very slow, then grape shot them a lot to kill their crew (maybe they will even surrender), then board them. You should have a fast and agile ship to do this.

Upgrades are great, the hull upgrade even let's you install bigger canons but for such small ships I don't think they're worth it.
