If you are asking about the PIRATES statistics, you will have a one time chance to increase ONE of them from a quest reward. Otherwise once you have chosen them, they are set for good.

If you are asking about your other skills, they all increase from use.

Good characters like it when you do 'good' things, like rescuing damsels in distress, helping the church and assisting your home country combat her enemies.

Evil characters like it when you do evil things, like killing innocents, sinking ships that belong to your own country and letting other pirates have their way with the damsels.

Something else that affects loyalty is making sure you pay your crew whenever you have a payday due.

That depends on the officer slot you put them in. If you put them into the Bosun position, then their authority stat and the related skills will be added to yours, if you put them in any other officer slot, then it won't have any effect.

If you don't have a letter of marque, then technically you don't have the right to attack enemy shipping. You would be acting as a wanton pirate. That is a bad thing.

Once you do have a letter of marque, that gives you the legal right to engage and capture or sink the enemy shipping of your country. Then it is a good thing.

<!--quoteo(post=323744:date=May 30 2009, 10:39 AM:name=Churruca)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Churruca @ May 30 2009, 10:39 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=323744"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->- How exactly can improve my nav skill, only sailing in the mainmap or also in combats?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Any time you sail, it adds at least slowly to the skill. You gain the least when sailing on the map, then you get the next better amount when sailing in combat on the sea instance and you gain the most experience for that skill by sailing in storms.

I can't answer that yet as I have just barely gotten my copy of the game, I'll have a better answer for you at a later date.

I've had a maximum of 6 ships in my squadron so far, you just need to have enough officers and men to capture the ships you've taken.

The trade license allows you to dock in cities belonging to enemy nations, as long as that nation does not hate you personally.

That really sucks, especially considering that officers can have vastly more points distributed between them. I saw a guy who had two 10s and only one 5, and nothing below that. I only get one 10, one 7, and the rest are 5s.
So what's the best way to distribute what little we have? I'm guessing talent should be a priority, since according to description it affects the rate of exp gain.

Thats really a good question. I'm figuring it depends on what you want to do, myself I usually drop my reaction down a bit and redistribute stuff until I have nothing less that a 5.

I've never had a stat at 10 yet, but I've always gone for a char that can take care of the works if necessary.

If you want a strong fighter for heavy weapons, you would increase Power and Reaction so you can carry more stuff and swing that weapon longer.

If you want someone that can hit and kill anything with 1 shot at 100 paces, increase your Talent and your Reaction I believe it is.

Etc, all depending on how you want your char to be.

I put 10 into talent for quick leveling and 7 into reaction for the energy (which doesn't really make sense, shouldn't that be tied to strength or endurance instead?). I'm just not really clear on what exactly the primary attributes affect and how. Do they only influence the skills' starting levels? Rate of skill increase? Or are they applied directly, ie a character with more strength deals more damage than a character with the same skill but lower strength?
From that follows the more fundamental question that I'd like answered, can I safely min-max? Drop attributes for skills provided by officers to minimum and focus on attributes useful for about the only thing that my character actually does, ie fighting?
I really like the levelling system (ripped directly from the Elder Scrolls series, btw), but it could do with some more explanation of what exactly is going on under the hood.

The starting Pirates Stats affect both the related skills initial starting level AND the rate at which they increase. At least that how I understand it.

I believe you would be safe min/maxing, as long as you do pick up officers that cover the other skills you lack in. But it would likely make things kind of tough until you find those correct supplemental officers.

Thanks for the nice answers Cap´n_Drow they solve my dubts or almost all.

Even doing good acts and having a letter of marque with my character im unable to rise up my officers loyalty and start to annoys me specially when im in open sea and capture a ship, if i want to capture it, is for sure the ship leaves the squadron and im sure is due to companion loyalty.
I have in my team Ian Stance and other main character a guy called Cornell or so they have pretty big authority perks i was wonder if that is the problem because is not normal to have the loyalty of all the officers to 0.

Should i fire those officers? so i think i can live without them they should be nice officers to my fleet but not yet im lvl 16 only and they are very usefull as officers, for now. Only have a schooner tricked to the bones the authority of Ian is 10 mines is only 3 i give to them some artifacts to get down his leadership skill and they are below mines but still the problems

and again Lot of thanks for your answers guys <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> .
