thanks catalina for this link, it made me read 'cpt blood' once again and enjoyed it like hell:) but, i found out that there were three books about cpt blood - do you happen to know links to them also? it's a shame i've never read them - they've never been published here in poland - and i would like to correct this mistake as soon as possible:)
 
argh, i found out that those books are still under copyrights... broke my pirate heart, but thanks to your links i quickly recovered - sabatini seemed to like pirates and he wrote more books in this mood - just started 'the sea hawk'. i remember seeing movie - with eroll flynn afair - as a kid, prolly piece of good reading it will be:)

Wow. I'm so uncouth the only version I knew of this tale was the Errol Flynn movie.

As far as I know, the Sea Hawkmovie isn´t quite the same as the book, the book covering the barbary coast pirates of the mediterrean.
 
I am halfway through the book. It's great! Funny at times too... like when the Spanish captain yelled... "Valga me Dios!" he cried out, like a man in anguish. "Will you tell me also that you are Don Diego de Espinosa?"

Captain Blood was actually based on a real welsh surgeon from the 17th century. Not much is known about him however (but he did go to the Caribbean at one point in his life but it was probably under different circumstances. He may have been a privateer or served with one, though Rafael Sabinti's captain blood was entirely his character. His real name is unknown, but "blood" was a nickname given to him by friends (possibly because surgeans at the time frequently performed rather bloody amputations and loved leeching people) His actual surname has since been lost (as Rok Brassilianos was as well). His first name may have been Peter, but other accounts say William or John, two other common British names (I speak for Ireland as well as they were under British rule at the time). I have never actually read any Cap'n Blood adventures, but I think I may very well look for some as they look very entertaining. He is one of the lesser known pirates (such as Davy Jones) who were based on real people and romantisized in works of fiction and legend
