Fixed Capture Colonies: Invisible Female Governor

The_Hussar

Landlubber
Hello! I am playing New Horizons mod Build 14 3.5 as Jean de la Croix and I took a quest from the governor of Saint Pierre to sink a 6th rate pirate ship. I read in the Wiki it should be between Guadalupe and Martinique but I fail to find it, may be an year passed since I received the quest. When I speak the governor I have the option to decline the quest but it says that it is English ship I failed to capture. ( I am privateer in French service). Also I can't get any quests from other French governors. Is there some time limit I had to capture/sink the ship?

Also I have a quest to sink a 16 gun Dutch ship Gauda around Cuba. Is this a main quest? And any time limit? I saw that ship a few months ago but I was too weak to successfully accomplish the mission so I withdraw. I haven't seen it since.

I know Jean de la Croix is little developed character but I don't wish to start over. I also like the NICE hat :D
And why in the residence when the niece of the governor is present, in Point a Pitre, Hispaniola, I have to speak to her instead of the governor himself? And what are the perks of marrying the governor's niece?

In the shipyard there is a tab called apperiance. I chose a Cursed caravel and my humble ship got 100 k hull points, 52 cannons, ect. The crew disappeared from the animation on the sea and never came back even if I changed the ship. To be honest it felt like cheating to have such a ship so early in the game ( I had a 7th rate ship back then). I guess this was already reported long ago but I found it strange.
Thanks in advance!

Governors routinely offer quests to hunt enemy ships, either pirate or belonging to an enemy nation. The ship will be somewhere in the vicinity of the island where you receive the quest. I believe that if you leave the island, the ship may disappear so you can not complete the quest, so you'll need to load a savegame from when you were at Martinique.

I think a time limit might have been added to these quests so that they expire if you have not completed them. That way, if you left the island and ruined the quest, you will be able to get another one some time later. This may be why you later got the quest to attack the Dutch ship near Cuba. Again, this is likely to be a routine quest from a governor and not part of a main quest. These ship-hunting quests are supposed to provide an opponent which is challenging but not too difficult based on your skill level and ship. What sort of ship are you sailing?

Point a Pitre is on Guadeloupe. Hire a new navigator. ;) Port au Prince is the town on Hispaniola and that's not the governor's niece, she's the lady governor! The man sitting at the desk is a naval officer who may have a specific job for you... Later on, when you're more famous, governors will indeed introduce you to their daughters or nieces. Marrying one can add a little to your fame but otherwise does nothing significant, apart from preventing any other governor from introducing his female relative.

The "Appearance" tab in the shipyard should normally only allow you to choose a similar ship to yours with a different colour scheme. If it's allowing you to trade a regular caravel for a cursed caravel then there's definitely something wrong.

My navigator may got too much rum on his hands, I have to cut down rations !

So if I tell the governor I cannot complete the quest, I might get another one after some time?
I got the quest for the Dutch ship near Cuba may be before the one given by the governor and in the quest book it doesn't tell who gave me this quest. So tha's why I thought it could be a main quest. At the time I saw the Dutch ship I had the default 7th rate ship my character had at the beginning but there were another 2 stronger ships so I had to withdraw. Now I have Heavy East Indiamen and Spanish War Galleon.
How many quests I have to complete for a governor to unlock "Landing party" perk?
Now I have the reputation of "Hero" and indeed the governor of Point Pitre was talking about his daughter after we finish talking about business but my character had nothing to say. So the appereance of the governor quests are random?
I don't think I had even a caravel when I got the Cursed caravel, just the default 7th rate ship my character had at the beginning. Very strange indeed!

Thanks fot yer patience!

I'm not sure how the timeout function works. Generally I take a ship-hunting quest, leave port, and use the "Sail-to" icon to go straight to one of the ships near the island. If there's nothing hostile near me then I try again to "Sail-to" another ship. If there's something hostile there then I attack it; if that happens to be the target ship then the quest is complete, otherwise keep trying until I do find the target. It has to be around somewhere...

The target should be matched to your ship and ability, but random ships which are nothing to do with the quest can also be generated around the island regardless of your capability. It's just bad luck if one or two of them happen to be near the target, which is probably what happened to you. If you're now using a Heavy East Indiaman and Spanish War Galleon, expect the targets of ship-hunting quests to be bigger as well, but it does mean any random additional ships should be easier to deal with.

I believe "Landing Party" is unlocked based on your rank. You earn relation points, which lead to promotions, by sinking or capturing enemy ships. These don't have to be involved in governors' quests, you can simply cruise around the high seas looking for enemy ships to attack. (There's a quicker way to unlock that and all other perks. Edit the file "InternalSettings.h", find the line '#define ALLOW_LOCKED_PERKS 1', replace the '1' with a '0', never have to worry about locked perks again, or at least not until you install the next update. Editing that file is about the first thing I do whenever I install an update or newer version, which is why I'm probably the wrong person to ask about how to unlock perks. xD)

First the governor will say that his niece (or daughter) will join you when you've finished business. If she doesn't appear, you may need to talk to the governor some more, or leave and go back into the residence. When she appears you can talk to her.

I see! Well, since I am Lieutenant de Vaisseau it seems there's a long way to gain the rank of Chevalier. But there are still many other things to do as well. Thank you, gentlemen!
P.S.: One last question - does Jean de la Croix have any main quests included in the current build? I haven't seen any in the wiki page. And if yes, how to access them?

He doesn't have one. Only the start is made.
For Beta 4 he has be removed as questline and his start is being used in freeplay now in some cases.

If it is the governor of Martinique, then either it is a random Ship Hunting for a Governor | PiratesAhoy! quest that you could get from ANY governor OR it is the Sink the Pirate Corvette | PiratesAhoy! sidequest.
It does not matter so much which of the two it is; either of them would be sailing around the island of Martinique.

When I speak the governor I have the option to decline the quest but it says that it is English ship I failed to capture. ( I am privateer in French service). Also I can't get any quests from other French governors. Is there some time limit I had to capture/sink the ship?
I cannot remember which of my changes are and aren't included in the Beta 3.5 WIP, so I am answering based on the latest status in the Beta 4 WIP:
Mod Release - Build 14 Beta 4 Internal WIP For Testing | PiratesAhoy!

For the normal "Ship Hunting for a Governor" quests, if you decline, then you should be able to get a new one after 3 days. If you fail to complete it, then the quest also expires after 7 days.
I am taking these numbers from memory; cannot remember the specifics right now. The main point is: These do expire and you can get new ones later.

Also I have a quest to sink a 16 gun Dutch ship Gauda around Cuba. Is this a main quest? And any time limit? I saw that ship a few months ago but I was too weak to successfully accomplish the mission so I withdraw. I haven't seen it since.
That sounds like the Sinking The Vogelstruijs | PiratesAhoy! sidequest. That used to be part of the unfinished "Jean de la Croix" main quest, but is now a sidequest available in all storylines.

And why in the residence when the niece of the governor is present, in Point a Pitre, Hispaniola, I have to speak to her instead of the governor himself?
As mentioned by others here, the lady IS the governor. The gentleman in the chair is just temporarily there to provide the "Sinking the Vogelstruys" sidequest.
In the latest Beta 4 versions, he disappears once that quest is completes. And during the quest, his dialog also points you to Ms. de Colville as being the actual governor.

He just isn't a true gentleman since he occupies her chair. (Also, female models like that governor cannot actually sit properly in the game, which is why she likes walking around.)

How many quests I have to complete for a governor to unlock "Landing party" perk?
You don't need to do any quests, but you DO need to get a Letter of Marque and get promoted a few times.
Quests can give you "relation points", but it is often quicker to just attack some random enemies at sea instead as @Grey Roger suggests.

P.S.: One last question - does Jean de la Croix have any main quests included in the current build? I haven't seen any in the wiki page. And if yes, how to access them?
What @Levis said. This is why he's now included as a selectable character for the new Free Play storyline.

I don't think so. Partly because it's "Sinking the Vogelstruijs", not "Sinking the Gauda". ;) And partly because you don't sink the Vogelstruijs in the usual way... But there's an easy way to be sure.
@The_Hussar , did you receive this quest from the man sitting at the desk in Port au Prince town hall or from someone else? The man at the desk is Contre-Amiral Beauregard and he's the one who will give you this specific quest. Anyone else is a regular governor who will give you routine ship-hunting quests.

I am not absolutely sure but I think I got this quest from Port au Prince.
When using the first person aiming mode for firearms, are the target supposed to jump after being hit? It's quite amusing, especially when they are sitting.

I unlocked the landing party perk, got Grand Turk for myself; San Juan and Port Royale for France. Viva la Roi!
Except for getting money and the ability to change the governor and fort commander can I do something else witht he town? It would be really nice establish my own kingdom, handle diplomacy and manage the foreign and domestic affairs of the state. I guess it's not included in the game but it would be a nice addition in the game engine permits. Or may be I am just used to play Mount & Blade Warband too much :cheeky

Also, is it possible to completely eradicate a faction if you conquer its whole lands?

We based that on the stock game "shotgun mode" cheat and made it into a fully developed game feature.
But since it is an engine thing, we don't have as much control over it as we'd really need.
The jumping isn't quite intentional on our part, but there is also nothing we can do about it. And it IS funny, so I don't mind.

You can gain income from taxes, but that it as far as colony management goes right now.
I would definitely like to see those features you decribe in the game as well, but I don't see it happening soon.
That is one for our Build 15 wishlist, I reckon: Build 15 Brainstorming | PiratesAhoy!

Also, is it possible to completely eradicate a faction if you conquer its whole lands?
Their ships would still remain at sea. But that isn't so odd, since they could be coming from Europe, after all. :cheeky

Thank you! I am sorry if this goes too far as the main problem is solved but I got a quest from a Spanish admiral in San Juan after I conquered the city about his lost son. So according to the information I went to Port Royale and after I conquered it I went to the tavern to seek further information about the lad and I was told he was gone for some days but he used to met the governor's daughter and I was to seek her in the jungles for a meeting. Now here's the problem: does this quest fails since there is a new French governor ( an invisible lady governor sitting in a chair)?
Poor Henry Morgan lost his city :dfiddle

Does he disappear from the game in this case?

I think, based on a quick look through "quests_side.c", that the daughter will appear. You don't need to talk to the governor, you need to go into the jungle and talk to the daughter directly - she's placed there by the quest code and does not require the governor to introduce her. But I suspect that neither the girl nor her escort will know that the town is now under new management because the quest code doesn't allow for the player conquering Port Royal first. Other side quests may be less forgiving, so I suggest holding off conquering everything until you've done them. ;)

New French governor where? And an invisible lady? You have more details? Sounds like some very strange things happened there.
I do remember female governors don't work well when assigned through Capture Colonies.
At some point I tried to make a fix for that, but it didn't quite work just yet.

So I can't take Port Royal for myself? I will load an old save to see that! I already gave the city to the French.

This happened just after I took Port Royal. The chair where the governor should sit was empty but when you face it, an icon of a lady appears, you can talk to her and she is a governor. I have to see if she will be changed by the Government later on...

Yes, you can. But don't be surprised if it messes up quests that make use of Port Royal.
But by all means, please do try! Otherwise we'll never find out. :cheeky

Did you take the city for yourself and assign a lady governor or did you give the town to another nation and that resulted in a lady governor?
Do you have a savegame?

I gave the city to the French. I am not at home at the moment but tomorrow I will attach a save - I am not sure if I have it but I can replay it. Well, I like challenging the game, its options and opportunities.

You should be able to take Port Royale, or any other town for that matter, for yourself or your choice of nation. Taking it for yourself will cost you two officers - you'll appoint one of them as the governor and the other as the fort commander, and once you've made the appointments you can't get them back or replace them with anyone else. The same problem still applies, though. Any quest which relies on the colony being owned by its original nation may fail, or at least do something odd, if you've captured it and handed it to someone else, including yourself. (On one occasion I captured Port au Prince on behalf of Britain, then did the "Angelique Moulin's father" side quest. The French officer who is the villain of that story was easy to spot, being the only Frenchman in a fort full of British soldiers. xD)

Here is the save as promised. It appears it was in San Juan, not Port Royal but the invisible lady governor is still there. Enjoy the bug riddle :wp

That save was made with Build 14 Beta 3.4, which by now is really quite old.
That version still made use of pre-defined governor characters and indeed the French option for Puerto Rico is a female one.
We found quite a while ago that assigning female governors doesn't seem to work, so I fixed it so that should never happen anymore unless it is a the player who does it.
But that fix was made after the Beta 3.4 release.

So the issue here has already been fixed in all recent Beta 4 WIP versions.

That being said, I do recall a very much related issue has not yet been fixed.
I made a separate issue for that one here: Confirmed Bug - Capture Colonies: Assigning Female Governor | PiratesAhoy!
