Ah, okay, thanks. I understand now. What level should I be? I am at 3 now. I guess I'll settle for capping and selling them. Anyway, ever since I found the officer in the tavern, things have been going well. With him as a companion on raids, I don't even have to shoot the cannons. Just board and take over. The key is obviously strength in numbers. I have a sloop now with 80+ men and that officer. I already got god of death as my first perk. Once I get the musket volley, what will I have to do to get it to function? It says something about appointing an officer with the same skill.

Commanding ships depends on your "Navigation" skill not "rank".

CoAS manual:
Class 1: requires 95
Class 2: 80
Class 3: 65
Class 4: 40
Class 5: 25
Class 6: 1

How do you increase navigation skill? And why do all of my PERSONAL skills drop when I command it? Does my character lose muscle mass when in charge of the ship?

whats your officers work on your ship???
if its not gunner than musketvolly is automaticly fired as you board a ship <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
if you have an officer on gunner he needs the ability <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

I have him as canoneer when shooting, but switch him to fighter (companion) just before boarding so I have an extra man. One more thing. I got the god of death perk as a prerequisite to musket volley. Does that mean if I have an officer at the god of death listed position, and that officer lacks the perk himself, then I do not get the benefits? So I should at all costs avoid having unskilled officers in charge of personal perk positions?

Also when hirering officers look on their personal skills if they got mulitasking = cover 2 positions , in due time they will progress nicely in the secondary role

Navigation increases when you are in battle. Somebody has also said that sailing through storm increases it rapidly. Oh, if you have navigator hired your both navigation skill will increase.
Second question I can't asnswer that's just the way it is.
Muscle mass? Do you mean weight limit? I just tested this and weight wasn't affected.

Hire a good navigator. I did and now life is great.

Well, I'll see if I can find a storm. I have 300k so I can afford the repairs. One more thing. I have an officer that can be assigned to multiple positions at once. Is this normal? Oh, and I just uncovered my first treasure chest. Where can I sell that stuff?

Yes, he has the multitasking skill. Very useful, IMO.
