Seriously though, I can completely understand that you can only work in the weekend: most of us, me included, have the same limitation.
And we've been known to wait for years for mods to be released, for example the Period Flags mod.
That has been over a year in the making and only now is getting close to being finished.

As long as the mods are released, I can wait. Though we've had it in the past that people were working on the coolest things,
but then they left without releasing what they did do, even if it wasn't finished. That's quite unfortunate, of course.

Even an unfinished mod is worthwhile, since somebody else can finish it later. Similar to what Hook's been doing with Maturin's Weather Mod:
Maturin made a massive improvement to the weather system but never managed to finish it, but thanks to Hook, it is now all fixed up.
Ehm... apart from occasionally the wave height in storms, that is... But it's definitly better than it used to be! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Okay then. I was just a bit afraid that what with me throwing all the ideas around people might expect me to have them ready on a weeks notice <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Also, in regards to the wave height, just yesterday evening I was sailing through a suspiciously calm twister <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And another thing: I haven't really found the time to do much directsailing yet, but it seemed to me that since you're technically never leaving the island region, even if you're very far away, you'll never get the heigher "open sea" waves. Can the weather mod not take distance into account when updating the weather on the hour? Or does the smaller wave height only apply to actually being ON the island, and I just got unlucky with the weather?

Throwing ideas around is easy; making them happen is another story altogether.
I actually found a Build 13 wishlist of mine that also included the general idea for this mod, along with some others that haven't yet been made,
such as the proposed changes to the officers system. I do like how, even if it takes years, eventually we do tend to manage to do what we imagined. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Apparently the wave height is limited around islands,
which is weird because I don't remember any low-wave storms before the Realistic Weather Mod was made.
As far as I'm concerned, the wave height doesn't really need to be limited around islands anyway. As long as it's limited if you're ON the island.
Which, at the moment, is NOT working well enough, because there's some locations, such as Guadeloupe port and the new plantation outside town,
where the waves can splash through the ground on places where it's really not supposed to. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

Which is why the waves are limited around islands. If I can figure out how to get waves larger than 0.5 when you're logged into an island, I'll do it. For "normal" port locations the waves are just about right.

I'll look to see why the waves aren't larger during a storm. That part of the code really isn't finished yet. For example, you don't get storm music. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I think I need a clarification <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

We have three possible location types where you can see the ocean:
1) You're on an island, for example standing at the port
2) You're on the sea around an island, where the cities are replaced by miniatures
3) You're on open sea

For 1, the waves indeed have to be small otherwise they spill over everything. But for 2 and 3 you should get high waves. I don't really think anyone cares if the waves in case 2 spill over some of the miniature cities. Or are cases 2 and 3 "hardlocked" together to the same max wave height?

Cases 1 and 2 have the same wave height limit. Case 3 has no limit at all, and you can get grotesquely large waves out there.

Note: I was in 2 storms tonight. One had low waves, the other had higher waves. I think we're going to have to artificially set the wave height without regard to the winds during a storm.

Hook

For case 2 and 3 I don't mind big wave but I don't want my ship to be swallow by it. I'm sailing a ship not a submarine.

Well, that doesn't make sense at all, seeing as they are totally different situations. I wouldn't actually mind so much if it wasn't for directsail. That mode kinda suffers from that.

They're the same situation, actually. In one case you're on a ship, the other you're on the dock. The water is handled the same way in both.

I've got a couple of ideas but I haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Oh. I thought in one case the sea environment got loaded and in the other not. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

And the city you see from sea is not the same you see from dock. So, the game may treat them the same, but really it shouldn't. I guess that's locked away in the engine then?

<!--quoteo(post=315262:date=Apr 23 2009, 01:36 AM:name=Hook)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Hook @ Apr 23 2009, 01:36 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=315262"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->If I can figure out how to get waves larger than 0.5 when you're logged into an island, I'll do it. Where is the limit set anyway? I'm pretty sure the original game didn't care if you were sailing at sea or around an island.

I agree with Erwin Lindemann: as long as you're sailing in 3D sailing mode, there doesn't need to be an artificial limit and wave height can depend on wind strength.
On the other hand, when you're walking ashore, wave height <i>should</i> be limited.
Additionally, how about adding an additional attribute that can be added to locations to set the maximum wave height REALLY low?
That could then be used for, say, the new Guadeloupe plantation and some of the AoP/CoAS port locations.

The wave height limit is in the game engine. If it were accessable to us, I'd have changed it already.

The original game had the same waves we do, basically. You wouldn't see high waves unless you'd logged into open sea instead of an island.

As for the broken locations where waves of 0.5 are higher than the land...

We can put some limits on it if you're on shore. Would be even better if we fixed the land location so we didn't have the problem. Same with some of the ship deck models where the waves wash over the deck. If the land locations are as ugly as some of those ship decks...

As always, I am totally late and therefore offtopic related to the current discussion - so sorry for this!

But regarding the rum/water contraband discussion, historical facts could solve this one - I did not see "grogg" mentioned anywhere.
I know, most of you already know it, but grogg = water + ale. Considered healthy, at sea and land - even by the church.
Especially due to heat conditions, water would quickly rotten - ale killed the bacterias in the water. Rum could still be used to boost the morale, but would not be a neccesary good.

Easy for me to mention, I know, as mplementing it is something different.

Already got a better fix for contraband rum. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to buy it, you'll just have to pay contraband prices.

Greetings!

Sorry about my distance in the past weeks, but my old brother (not blood brother, but still) was shot in Bolivia ^^ and DIA.
To cut it short, the USA gov. thinks right, yes, they were framed.
I know him long time, he went home to help his family only.

If this "statement" is disliked by anyone, I encourage the admins to remove it, and sorry about the inconvenience.
Just to make clear, why I disappeared. Had to take care about his family, friends here. (Hungary)
Was a good man, happy man, and this is the way we remember to him <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

At the coming week im going to continue the work on the career mod,
im also very interested in the weather/waves discussion

Keep up the good work <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Good winds, and godspeed!
