CCC's SWAK & Stormy Start mod

CatalinaThePirate

Unholy Terror,
Storm Modder
<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> WhooHOOO! A new mod to play! Everyone with Build 12 is invited to try Couchcaptain Charles's SWAK & Story Start mod!<!--QuoteBegin-Couchcaptain Charles+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Couchcaptain Charles)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin--><b>For a change and a challenge: The Stormy Start Mod
--------------------------------------------------------------</b>

Tired of starting the game at always the same place, of always listening to
Malcolm's prattling, of always buying a spyglass and selling leather for a
start? Not to mention seeing the French invasion for the umpteenth time.
Well, I was, so I made this mod so that every start of the game will be a
fresh challenge under different conditions.

Stormy Start adds an OPTION to Malcolm's initial dialog: you can cut him
short and order to leave Oxbay port right away. As there is supposed to be
storm raging which you have to ride out you will be driven to some desolate
and possibly hostile beach with a possibly damaged ship and crew. As
compensation you will have an (always changing) inventory of weapons and
gadgets, and a cargo of contraband goods. Smugglers and highwaymen may help
you out of your dilemma.

<b>The Special Weapon Assembling Kit
------------------------------------------</b>
featuring "The Big Beautiful Blunderbuss" model by Duke Suraknar and several
ideas, weaponmodels and pictures by Alan Smithee.

The " Special Weapon Assembling Kit" contains not only several new weapons
with unique new functions, like grenades, stunbombs, poisoned blades,
`knock-out`-bags etc. It also makes it easy for everybody to assemble his own
special weapons by combining features from a given set.

<b>--------------Installation--------------</b>
Please keep in mind that this mod is a private amateur venture, and
therefore there is just not enough manpower to test it to perfection. So do
make a back up of your old files first. Easiest way would be to make a copy
of the entire "Pirates of the Caribbeanprogram" folder.

After that unzip the "SWAK&StormyStart.zip" file into the "Pirates of the
Caribbean" folder. A "SWAK_readme.txt" file with elaborate documentation
will be copied into the "Pirates of the Caribbean" folder as well.

This mod is based on PotC Build12 and contains a few bugfixes for that. Most
features should work in older savegames after reinitialization (press "I")

This is on the PiratesAhoy FTP -

<a href="ftp://files%40piratesahoy%2Enet@ftp.piratesahoy.net/SWAKnStormyStart/" target="_blank">ftp://files%40piratesahoy%2Enet@ftp.pirat...AKnStormyStart/</a>

If it asks you for a password, it is <span style='color:red'>piratesahoy</span> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Take the .zip file - also take the ReadMe so you will have the instructions on how to install (also posted above). <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I've played this while testing, and it's a lot of fun - you should enjoy it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Stormy Start is just what I need <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Awesome! I've been playing something else for some weeks... maybe it is time to go Pirating again <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Ok, where does all this stuff need to go?? Im not used to this kind of thing. Any help would be great. I think there must be more that needs to be done then just unzipping into the game directory...

Hi <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Great news <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" /> , have a beer <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> . I Just finished the game and you will make me play it all over again this weekend (starting today evening... my wife will have me shot... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> ).

Cap'n McNil, check the ReadMe's to find out what to do. You simply unzip it and copy and paste over the regular game files. Copy and save (elsewhere) your PROGRAM file first - just in case you wish to reset your game back to where it was before installing the SWAK/SS...

<b>I, however, have found a couple of weird things wrong with this mod</b> - I'm not sure if it was just ME or whatever, but it does odd things to `re-write` your game starting point in BuildSettings.h file - I want to know if this is intentional - it seems to alter the settings in the ModHelper, which overwrites the BS.h file. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Also, when you try to talk to Malcolm, you have to scroll down with the arrows, but cannot talk using your spacebar. You HAVE to click your mouse to talk. Very awkward and you can't remap... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

Also, I found that sometimes I could not leave the tutorial cabin, even after I told Malcolm to shut up and let's sail. We did not go anywhere...

And... I could not sail my ship when in the overhead ocean view... Only thing I could do was go back to sea level, and then get clobbered and sunk by the French because I found myself in the Oxbay harbor with a 2% hull!!!!!!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> Now I know it's supposed to be a challenge, but HEY!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I want to know if it's just me, or if you others are having the same problems... I thought maybe it was some problem from a mod I am working on, but I copied over a clean set of Program files to install over, and the same thing happened. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I've uninstalled. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

That must be the Init_PC file which wasn't in the test version that worked so well for you. It is based on my Euro edition, so it may not work with the US version <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Cat, sorry that I have to trouble you again, after you already posted the download for me. But could you try if it works if you replace my Controlsinit_pc.c with your old one ?

And if it works, could you mail me YOUR init_pc so that I can check what is different?

Thanks a lot, and sorry for all the trouble <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> It didn't work. I was stuck in the tutorial deck cabin. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

It seemed to fix the spacebar dialog problem, tho! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I'm still not sure if it's just me - I *think* that my clean install of PotC is clean... But not certain... Someone else should check this to see if it happens to them, too. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

<edit> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> Meant to ask you, CCC, about that note in your readme concerning your upcoming boarding party mod... Can your custom crew be a group, too? Nathan and I were talking about that - you can designate certain groups (military, pirates, women, all skellies, or custom skins...) to be your boarding party... </edit>

CCC, I really appreciate this kind of teaching all the time. JACK RACKHAM teacher, when not studying POTC file & functions.

Thanks, Jack, I am only always trying to lure more people into PotC modding <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> I hope I do not come across as the smartass Mr Knowall.

Which I am of course not, as this example of a bungled publication shows <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Cat, it is certainly not only you but only me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> I have found the problem of being stuck in the cabin, a piece of testmod i haven't removed <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> . So i only need an unmodded `US-compatible` controlsinit_pc ....

Group of boarder models can certainly be done, just a question of how long and complicated you want to make the code.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Hi guys <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

I just finished some PotC working installations:

a) PotC Original version
B) PotC Build12 clean installation
c) A folder PotC Mods with all working mods posted on the PiratesAhoy FTP
d) PotC Build12 + Pieter Boelen's PotcMods.zip + A_S New Residences + Petro's WarGalleon mod
e) Potc with A&M Addon

I have the intention to use a, b and c for backup reasons, and d and e just to play.

My question is the following:

If I want to `test-play` a new mod like CCC's SWAK & Stormy Start Mod shall I use a replica of installation b or d? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Hummm, well CCC's new mod may not be compatible (it may overwrite) with other mods... Best to either install on a clean B12, or wait until we get them all integrated for a B12 upgrade (to B12.2!).

<b>CCC, </b>I've been testing your new version of the SWAK/SS, and am finding a couple of things still troublesome...

1.) You get unarmed enemies when you board ships. To kill any unarmed people gives you a severe hit on your reputation - but killing these guys off is the only way to complete the boarding, as you will not advance to the next level until all the enemy of the first level are dead. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

2.) I'm getting intermittent CTD's with no error logs. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I can probably give you a compile.log and a system.log but no error.log file generates. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Not sure this will help. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Let me know.

Have tested two starts (Conceicao and Douwesen), which went fine. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Will test more as I find the time later on tonight. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Problem, I have extrcted the .zip in the game repertory, but when i start the game that crasch, a windows which says "anormal programm termination"

I have the build 12. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />

Zozogh, under the download link you get a first version of this mod which is obvoiusly rather buggy <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> So I recommend that you don't use it until further notice, sorry.

Maybe the routine for equiping random NPCs get's confused if it tries to equip a SWAK weapon without Scheffnow's bladequality attribute? Though we had the problem of NPCs without weapons before as well, but FAIK never during boarding.
I'll try to change the definition of the SWAK blades so that they are not being used for NPC equipment

Wow! That is some great mod. Not quite without it's bugs still, unfortunately, but really good fun. Some things I noticed:
1) I can't talk using spacebar anymore; I now have to use the mouse button (I didn't even know that was possible. WAS that even possible?)
2) I ALWAYS end up in the Conceicao blacksmith when using the stormy start option
3) I seem to have trouble getting the blunderbus to fire. It doesn't always work, though I did get it to work some once
4) The intro movies don't play anymore
(I have what I believe to be a European UbiSoft version of PotC)

That is what I found and can remember. Hope this might help getting rid of the bugs. This truly is a mod worth adding to the game! [SHOCK]
<span style='color:red'>Edit:</span> Thought I'd also say how much fun I find the new weapons. They truly add a lot to the experience of the game; especially when playing as untrustworthy lad. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />
