and hope every one who didnt or not yet, will finish that quest after read this.. :mm

some said at balcon of resident
some said at random ship
and some said only at main ship (not in the vessel/ship)

how abaout me??

I found it always at different places, once it was on the deck of Eva once on the deck of the moneylender`s ship.It IS randomly placed!!!
If you having trouble finding it start running around one ship at a time(!!!!)(don`t forget to check the foredecks!)and look for the hand icon appear not for the actual key...
Of course you can still replace the key for a ladder as others did before

Edit: dont forget to trigger the event by talking to one of the maids(?) in the tavern

replace by ladder?[means what?]can you describe how to do it?

You really have to have a lot of luck to find that stupid key
I actually ran over it without having seen it but then I noticed the hand icon on the bow of the san augustine. But it is really randomly placed. I can confirm though that it is only on the decks, not inside the ships.
Replacing the key with a ladder means, that you can change the item "chads key" (or whatever it is called) with another item in the game data which is bigger and which is therefore better to spot on the ships decks.
I cant describe what exactly you have to do but I think I read it in the "preparations for walktrough" topic, so you might have a look there.
Good luck finding that bastard

And another tipp: Once you find it and open dexters chest you should take all the items in it. I couldnt carry it all, so I swam to the diffindur with only half of the loot and when I came back the rest was gone. Luckily I got the three skulls and the rat totem on my first run.

Sorry for double post but I found the description! Here it is:

Just as I expected... better look for a sword than a tiny key <img src="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Make a backup of the Key item models (3 of them, not sure what is fromt both of them):
RESOURCE\MODELS\Items\keygrand.gm
RESOURCE\MODELS\Items\keymiddle.gm
RESOURCE\MODELS\Items\keysimple.gm

Make 3 copies of blade1.gm and rename those copies as the 3 keys.
Enter the game and look for a sword on the floor <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/jackhat.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":j2" border="0" alt="jackhat.gif" />
Once you get the Admiral�s key, save, exit and restore the backup of the 3 original key models.
