How do you swap one character for another?

For instance I want to change some soldiers from one model to another. And if I do make this change, will I have to edit the model to use another texture?

The idea I'm throwing around in my mind is this:

English soldiers look like they belong in the late 17th century, early 18th century. From the pictures I've seen of English soldiers from the Civil War, 1642-1651 which is much closer to COAS time frame, they look more like the Spanish soldiers in the game.

So I was thinking if it were possible to swap out the current English soldier model with the Spanish soldiers, then change the texture of the model and make them look English instead. But leaving the Spanish soldiers (for Spain) unchanged.

Copy the file, rename it (the model)

Copy texture, make it english looking (save it as a word the same length as original texture)

Open the gm file with a hex-editor and change the texture name to the new one...

(if you name the gm what the original model is called it will be in game instead of them ;))

Doesn't sound too complicated xD:

It's just a bit difficult to peg a uniform on them since by the mid or late 17th century the English look different from the early half of the 17th from what I'm seeing. Plus the models themselves aren't 100% accurate so it creates bit of a give and take.

The only thing I can say with certainty i think is that the English coat the models have shouldn't be there untill the early 17th century.

Update: I just realized that the character mod replaces the original English soldiers with the ones I'm thinking of replacing, I just never noticed since I installed the mod before playing an unmodded game. I see it replaces the French too.

What do the original soldiers look like? :shrug

After getting a look at the original soldiers, I've decided that this idea is a little too ambitious at the moment.

But, here are some pictures I was able to find of various soldiers and officers from 1660.

An attempt at the uniform seen in the final link :?

Nice for a first try. This is what I have come up with lasts weeks (Officer needs still some work though):

1660-1680 First picture is regular soldier, second musketeer and last one an officer

So anybody interested?

Awesome! :onya

I'd d/l for sure! Best part is I think you don't need to start a new game either. I replaced soldier models and textures of that character pack with the orginals and it works fine on my save game.

How are your English troops coming along? I'm looking forward to using them to replace the default ones in my game :onya

While on the subject, I installed POTC and AOP again and saw that there are still some models that haven't been ported over into COAS. Would porting some of the POTC/AOP models into the game be a problem? Animation wise?

I found the thread on how to do it, so I hope it proves as easy as it sounds. If I can get it working, I'll be sure to include this into the COAS CM.

I'm still collecting the POTC files, so far I can say there will be about 20+ characters from POTC. I haven't started in AOP yet but I don't think many will come out of that one since a lot of the COAS characters came from AOP.
