Confused on how to board ships.

I just downloaded build 13. I haven't played this game in over a year. I can't figure out however how to board ships now. It used to be that you would just pull up beside them and the grappling hook would show up in the menu. You would select it, board the ship, and fight on the deck. Now when I pull up along side a ship nothing happens. I never see the grappling hook.

Am I missing something?

check your boarding skill and abilities and if any of your officers has them. how close are you and at what angle?

I just started a new game. I guess my boarding skill would only be 1...as I haven't leveled up yet. I don't have any officers either. Perhaps I'll try that.

When I have been trying to board however, I've been right beside them, hitting them even in some cases.

what you're probably doing wrong is your speed. try slowly overtaking your enemy, and then striking sail when in position. (it might be nessesary to strike all your sails to get at the right speed in time, but then you will have to be even faster when selecting to board) master of boarding will largely neutralize the speed and angle factor. pressing F3 when the boarding icon appears will immediatly initiate boarding. higher boarding skill increases the range at which you can board. trying to board at level 1 boarding skill and no boarding abilities is an extrememly delicate procedure, but it can be done. just get the speed and angle right at the same time. the speed's the tricky bit, but if you follow my advice, you should be able to manage.
