Corsair, Adventurer, Merchant?

What are the differences between these three? I can guess at merchant...but they don't do a very good job at explaining the difference between "adventurer" and "corsair".

The only difference between the classes is the standard PIRATES skills. Each class starts out with what the designers consider an optimal setting for that class.

But no matter what, you get a chance to change those settings shortly after you start a new game.

Oh...so when the back of box says that all 3 have unique quests for them, they were lying?

It's not a lie. You have three unique characters.
Peter Blood (corsair)
Diego Espinoza (adventurer)
Ian Thorpe (merchant) - I'm not sure about his surname. I don't have game at hand right now

Yeah, but they don't have unique quests (well okay, Blood does, but not the other two).

Well, this can be modded. Blood deserves a good story based on the book "Captain Blood" from Rafael Sabatini and/or the movie with Errol Flynn.

The unique quests are not based on class as far as I can tell, but nationality.

And each nationality has its own custom series of quests.

The random quests are the same for all nationalities.

Actually, judging by the synopsis of the book, the prologue does seem to be based on it.

Well not to be overly critical, but while I liked the little nod they gave to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies by including Jacques Swallow, when you find out about his history, it's EXACTLY like the movies. So...the devs aren't exactly imaginative with their stories. I don't really care, but it does speak to the devs' lack of narrative imagination. Then again, I'm just thankful that there ARE stories in this one. I couldn't play the first AoP.

Yeah, that one was really horrible in this regard. But come on, Swallow was just an easter egg meant to be funny. Of course his history was exactly as in the movies, that was the whole <i>point</i>.

Yeah I get it. I guess I just think that they should have named the guy Swallow, had him act like Johnny Depp, had his quest to get him off the island and that was that. You either got the reference or you didn't. But they took it that one step further and almost word for word plagiarized the script of the movie. That last part took it from easter egg to lazy looking. See the difference?

No, because the way your character and Swallow play the scene for a while before realizing they're not in the movie is the whole point, that's what makes it funny. I did say that.
Althought it would've been even better if they stuck him somewhere on one of the uninhabited islands instead. He's a bit too visible for an easter egg.

What exactly happens when you talk to this Jacques Swallow? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
Oh... and I suppose it's probably really easy to move him elsewhere through the character init files.

Whenever people encounter something that needs to be improved and is easily done, why not somebody does it,
then stick everybody's modifications together, eh? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

He's one of the quests you can do as Peter Blood to get money together for an escape ship. He's in the Bridgetown store.

I don't have the game yet, but I'd like to know what actually happens. Dialog-wise. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Oh well he basically just wants you to find him a ship captain to smuggle him out off of the island. When you go to the shipwright to ask if he knows anyone, and if you tell him that it's Jacques Swallow who needs to be smuggled, the shipwright gives you the whole backstory of Swallow. This includes the story of how his crew mutinied against him (aboard the Ebony Oyster...yuck yuck), how they left him on an island...they even pretty much copy the whole "strapping two sea turtles together" fable and the real way he got off, by hitching a ride with smugglers who were visiting their rum stash. Anyway the backstory is, like I said, pretty much a word for word plaigerizing of the movie. Finally he tells you of a captain that will take him. You have to lie about who you want smuggled to the captain but then you go find Swallow in the tavern and demand compensation. And then he's gone.

Hehe. Alright then; thanks. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />
Does the character resemble Jack Sparrow in any way? Or is he another "Horatio Hornblower"? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

They just use the model of one of the officers that has the tri-corn hat.
