Cutthroats: Terror on the High Seas

Davie Jones

Landlubber
Hey mates.

Any o' ye ever play Cutthroats: Terror on the High Seas?

It was a blast and the forum at Eidos was a hoot!

Barkeep! A round o' rum fer everyone!!!

I played Cutthroats, what I could of it, and I liked the land battles and taking over the towns, however, the game gave me no end of frustration due to crashes. It wouldn't even load onto my current computer, so I never really got the full Cutthroats experience. You mentioned a forum at Eidos for the game, and I may go and check that out to see if anyone else ran into the problems that I was having and/or if there are any patches or fixes that may help me develop a greater appreciation for the game.

I do recall enjoying capturing large groups of townspeople and trying to herd them back to my ship, but that was also right about when the game would crash for me. Arrgh! :x

Arrr, Sir Chris! Fred Bob didn't be a knowin' ye onct played CT! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Broke the game the first day you got it, eh, Sir Christopher? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Hmmm, I have the game but couldn't get it to work - and I am not quite sure why I didn't seek out any fixes. Maybe I got caught up in a different game (like Corsairs, as I recall, which I got right around the same time, or maybe it was Redguard)...

Thanks Fred Bob!

I played it a few times many years ago - i just couldn't quite decide if it was better than the classic Pirates! by Microprose though.

It had more of mostly everything, better tactical battles at sea and on land, more detail with most things too.

BUT it somehow didnt have that same addicitiveness i remember Pirates! having.

An excellent game though and as i still have it this thread has made me want to have another go at it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Added:25/08/04

I've got it running ok on a P166 with 48MB ram + 2MB graphics card.
I last played it on a PII500 with 64MB ram + 8MB card - it was a bit smoother on this system, the music occasionaly skips on the P166.

Still i got the latest uk patch and will post how it all goes - intial impressions are favourable <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

ok i've been playing this for the last week or so, so its early days but i'll give some more info on the game.

Positive review here <a href="http://www.gamepro.com/computer/pc/games/reviews/2560.shtml" target="_blank">http://www.gamepro.com/computer/pc/games/r...iews/2560.shtml</a>

Negative review here <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/cutthroatsterroronths/review.html" target="_blank">http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/cutthr...ths/review.html</a>

And to add to Fred_Bob's patch link i found the one that Eidos still have on their site here <a href="http://support.eidosinteractive.com/GI/CustomerSupport/FaqSearchResults.jsp?problemType=13&searchText=&game=60&platform=3" target="_blank">http://support.eidosinteractive.com/GI/Cus...e=60&platform=3</a>

Still it is worth noting that even with the latest patch the game has its odd momments of frustration.

The system i'm running it on is:

P166
48MB ram
2mb video card
Win98se

I find with many older titles it is best to use older hardware, this quite often solves many of the problems you get otherwise.

I've had two crashes so far, and noticed that the land battles moved very slowly(even for a P166!). A quick read through the FAQ mentioned something about graphic card settings and crashing - so i followed the advice and in my card properties window i turned the graphics card slider from 'full' two notches down but not completely to 'none'.

Since then i've noticed a marked improvement in the speed of landbattles, and best of all no crashes since <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The game itself is full of pirate flavour, from the things you get to do in game to all the sound effects and amusing voice acting that when it isnt annoying the hell out of you, is full of salty seadog pirate goodness.
Its basically a complicated version of Sids origonal Pirates! game.

But its not as easy to play or get into - you have to really spend time with it and get to learn the interface which is rather fiddly and buggy in places(like in the Dock screen when loading your ships with goods!)

Still so far i'm having a blast and starting from the early period of 1625 its proving to be very hard as Spain , your main source of pirate income, are the only real power in the caribbean. Hopefully i can survive and keep going for the 80 odd years the game covers! Luckily i love a good challange.

I'll post more info that might help people with problems as i get to grips with the game, this is quite an epic game so i'll need to have a good go at it first.

Cutthroats is one of the best games I have played. i like strategy so this game drawed me in straight away and I felt like I was really in the game! . I no longer have this game because I snapped it in half because I kept on playing it to much and I got into trouble. Now I don't know where I can find the original game. Someboedy `E-Mail` back. Ahoy!!!!

your best bet would be to look around on the budget labels at your local store. I did see it a while back for around £5, but that was over a year ago!!

Ahoy there child of Thor! The cheap ones are rubbish as I have bought many games which are £5 each but they often crash and develop problems. So anyone out there on the high seas who knows where I can get the ORIGINAL game. What age are all you people? I am 15 almost 16! I want to build a computer with the following specifications once I leave school, although I am going to college:
AMD Athlon 64 `FX-53`
Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra
A PCI Express motherboard. ( Not sure which one as of yet)
250GB SATA Western Digital Hard Drive
A VERY good case!!!
Then I am not sure what else although I am going to opt fro no less then a 480W PSU. This and the other parts which I have yet to come across will cost me approx. £4,000!!
Now you may be wondering why I am telling you this, well firstly because once I have made it I will mainly use it as a extremly fast gaming computer, and secondly to know whether or not there are any computer enthusiasts out here in these trechorus oceans of the seven seas! Any good advice?? `E-Mail` back mateys. Arghhh~!

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> Ahoy Mitesh007,

well it's difficult to find many of these older games on anything other than budget labels.
I've got many of them and they all work fine for me. But that might be beause i also play them on old hardware.
I've found that if you want to play an older game this is the best way to avoid any compatibility problems.
And even patched on my old pc, Cutthroats isn't a smooth sailing game - still for pure pirate fun i like it very much <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Has anyone here heard of Eve online? Well I was wondering if there is a version of it which does not require the internet to play, for example a multiplayer version? I am very interested in space strategy as well especially games such as Eve online. I do not understand much about how Eve online works, does it cost all the time during the period at which you are playing? Or is there only a charge when you begin playing? Do you have to pay to join a game? Is it a fixed amount or is it per month etc? If I ever do make the computer I talked about then I would consider not having the internet, because I feel it is a waste of money when you can just go around your local library, and also because of the massive amounts of viruses and spam getting through. `E-Mail` back.

heard of it but dont know of it, found a link for it and it looks good, although i'm not really a MMORPG player. Just type 'eve online' into google and it should take you to the main site for more info on it or click the link here <a href="http://www.`eve-online`.com/" target="_blank">http://www.`eve-online`.com/</a> to go there.

I've not been playing Cutthroats so much recently, its one of those games that can go on for ages and i've been sidetracked by a few other games.
I will get back to it though and do a write up of my pirate adventure for you all sometime <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

Having missed out on pirates! Cutthroats got me into Pirating games in a big way, i never experienced any crashes or unreliability but i was playing it on a low spec machine. I do seem to remember that the loading sequences were horrifically long though between action phases though. Oh and captured people never followed you back to your ship but used to walk off randomly, PAtch v7.00 fixed the first of these, the second i circumnavigated by mowing them down from sea with mighty broadsides. The AI was so silly the townsfolk would walk to the scene of an explosion, so you could lower sails and blast away. Taking cannon into the streets was good fun though.

Yeah got it ,but since its is a old game and i use WindowsXP i can't start so ME MONEY WNT TO THE DRAIN ,but nevermind <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

One of my favorite games! Love it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p2" border="0" alt="pirate3.gif" />

The game has potential but also a lot of annoying feats.
The land battles took way to long and the men sometimes moved around clueless even if you ordered them to do something.

The sea battles are fun sometimes but when, for instance, you want to escape a ship it can take forever to change to the normal view.

So, not my kind of pirate game.

AAaaarrrr! It be one of my fav games of all times too!

Does it not work on XP? Erk! I just upgraded my PC recently and was planning on installing CT on there... maybe its not to be <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

The forum has moved twice, once when Eidos closed it and once when STSTS froze - they can't sink us!!! We're now at <a href="http://loifsplace.com/smf/index.php/board,3.0.html" target="_blank">http://loifsplace.com/smf/index.php/board,3.0.html</a>
