Dialog Not Showing Up

Hi! First post here. Just picked this game up, installed it, and immediately got frustrated because the text isn't showing up in the dialog boxes. Very, very annoying. Everything else works great...had graphics problem and disc recognition problem, but I fixed those by running in windowed mode and getting a no CD fix respectively. Any ideas? Could the path to the fonts be screwed up somewhere? Any help is greatly, GREATLY appreciated.
 
I should also add that I just upgraded my Geforce 4 64 meg card's latest drivers, which fixed the fullscreen graphics problem. Still no text, tho. However, I just remembered that when I installed it, when it asked for Disk 1 after it was finished, it wouldn't recognize it. Still won't, actually, I just tried reinstalling it. It stuck there asking for Disc 1, so I had to force the process to end by hitting ctrl-alt-del (this happened both times) it copied all the files, and did this only after I told it not to install DX and MSMP, but could that be the problem? And if so, how in the hell am I supposed to fix it?! I'm willing to trade my soul for any help, so... <eg>

Not sure what to tell you on the font problem, that's something I haven't seen before. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

As far as that Disk 1 problem, check your disk, perhaps it is scratched? If it is, you might be able to return it to the store and get a replacement.

A good fix for all that ails you MAY be to download our Build mods. You won't need a CD after they're installed, and it improves the game immensely (fixes bugs, adds content, you can play past the end of the main quest &tc). It's a LOT of files, long download especially if you're on an analog dialup connection, but it's well worth it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

If you are in US/UK you should be able to get the Build via the online installer, otherwise, Euro version copies of PotC have had trouble with the online installer and need the full version download (Pieter's).

Thanks for the warm welcome, Catalina! I really wasn't expecting an answer that fast! Unfortunately tho, I really can't download that. I live in a rural area in Texas, and the god forsaken cable access ends a half mile down the road!! So, I guess I'll keep looking. Thanks anyways, tho! I have no idea what could be going wrong. I even fixed the CD recognition problem and reinstalled it again, this time with no errors...still a problem, tho. I'll try some more ideas. Thinking maybe its something wrong with my video card...thats only a guess, tho.

I suppose you'll want my soul now, huh? :p I'll need some more ale first. And maybe some whiskey. >;)

When I first installed PotC, when I tried to run it, it also didn't recognize the CD if I recall correctly. Or did it just crash before even attempting to load. I can't quite remember. But what worked was to, in Windows XP, open up a different user and then run the game through that. Beats me why, but it worked. You might want to try. GAH!! Still no good. I don't get it!! Some of the text shows up, like some of my options for replies, but none of the actual dialog. I saw there was a patch for Nvidia cards, but the links are dead. And so is the link to the dialog editor.

Anyone have ANY ideas whats going on? I got Build 11 while I'm waiting on Build12, and it didn't fix anything. I'm thinking something's wrong with my dialog files, or the language setting is screwed up. Is there any issues with this game and nVidia GeForce4 cards running on WinXP?

Man, its kinda nostalgic, tho. I haven't had this much trouble getting a game to run since good ol' MS-DOS days. Of course, this problem seems to make no sense at all..but oh well! I'll fix it someday, its like a challenge now. >:)
 
If you open up the PROGRAM\DIALOGS folder, are there a whole bunch of dialog files there? Dialog files are <i>personname</i>_dialog.c and <i>personname</i>_dialog.h . Or are they in a subfolder with the name of a language (Say a subfolder called "ENGLISH" or "RUSSIAN" or anything). If so, move the files from the language subfolder into the main folder and see if that does any good.
 
The Nvidia patch is for if you have foglike conditions all the time. Not sure if that applies to your troubles.

This game is FULL of mysterious things that seem to happen for no reason at all... Thanks for the suggestion. but all the dialog files were in their correct place. And yes Catalina, I'm starting to think some higher force is at work here...some mysterious unseeen horror that really doesn't want me to play this game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Bethesda IS doing that Cthulhu game...hmm...


I'll prolly be getting Build 12 tonight, and I'll see what happens after I get that installed. Wish me luck! Apparently I REALLY need it!
 
Quick update, I replaced the fonts.ini file in resource/ini with the one in resource/ini/euro, and I get seemingly random words showing up in the the dialog. Still useless, but I guess this can be considered progress?? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Also, forgot to mention earlier...some of the options in the option menu aren't even showing up. The two things listed under controls are just blank bars.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure its either the fonts.ini file or the font texture files themselves. Not sure what to do about it, tho.

I can't tell ya how many times I have installed PotC on my computer.

START FIRST with the stock game, and make sure it works, then go from there to the B12 installer - then make sure it works - and then go from there to anything else. That'll at least help us track down what's happening.

So you're having this problem with stock POTC as well as b11, and now as well in b12?

Can you tell me the size of your modules\DX8Render.DLL file is? (size, not size-on-disk).
With the build, it should be 274,432 bytes.

I can send you the build's (Euro-based) font textures and INIs, but they'll probably not work on stock POTC without some modding (but you have the build now, right?).

Because ...I am having it too...have read the thread and seems we went throught the same steps here...

This is rather mind bogling <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

And frustrating to say the least.

I have compared fonts.ini files from other people and it turns out they are the same, so the file is not really the cause.

I am thinking it maybe a Application/Utility...but not easy to identify which one.

just a hunch here..HeadKickRodeo...have you by any chance Installed Rome Total War ever played it or Modded it?

Also...have you ever installed any Nvidia .DDS tools?

PotC uses the .DDS compression for the textures...however an older version...

I get exactly the same Symptoms...

No Dialogs except bits and peaces here and there...

No Text inside Options...

In the Character Page there is no text for "Nathaniel Hawk" name either...

Haven't heard of any solution, but I haven't heard of the problem either lately. Maybe something that only certain hardware/software constellations have? Those are the hardest to find <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

Pieter's latest modpack includes new interface/fonts by maximus. Have you tried that?
