Erm, it's not the CPU or the wind, it's a bug, and this game is full of em!

My pc is: AMD 2600, and I'm running a Radeon 9600 XT,and I have set the game to 1024 X 768 or 800 X 600. Either way, the engine slows down on zoom in, and speeds up on zoom out. The auto scale/camera is bugged.

Should be the reverse since if you think about it things appear slower when against a larger backdrop, then when they are close (scientific term is parallex error).

Also, the sailing against the wind doesn't always slow down the real speed, and the onscreen knotspeed is near worthless, I have fast movement with slow displayed knot speed and vice versa.

The fight and dance arcade sequences are awesome.

The rest of the game sailing/trading/story is largely ripped from Koei's uncharted waters 2 made more than 10 years ago, and even so UW2 is more versatile than the primitive game dynamics economics etc in here.

They should have went with the civ scenario system instead of only 1 story and the same side quests over and over again.

They even left out basic things like health bars and ship health etc. As a courtesy, Atari should at least fix the speed bugs, as for content, we might have to wait for an addon pack unless it becomes public generated like Civ.

In the meantime, you should search for Koei's Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons. Now that was a good game. It even made game time user defined so you can speed up the movement etc. You could commission ships, the whole world was included not just the Carribean, the trading, and guild missions were interesting and varied.

Damn Sid Meier is losing his touch.

Uh huh, and where do you think UW2 ripped these elements from? Perhaps a game released 17 years ago?

That's true that pirates! gave rise to the whole genre, all the more reason, why this edition seems very sloppy like all other recent releases from firaxis.

Actually they are doing a remake of UW2 as well for an online 2005 PS2 release:
<a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/506/506880p1.html" target="_blank">http://pc.ign.com/articles/506/506880p1.html</a>

Not really much of an online gamer myself....

I don't have a problem with not having health bars. The onscreen damage indicators work for me... holes in the sails, hull starts smoking etc. I know what I am up against and have a pretty good idea what my ship can take. Adds some suspense to me.

Sorry you don't like the game. I find that it's a wonderful remake of the original (and I agree with StarEye about it's lineage).

First: If sailing against the wind slowed you down it would be a very frustrating game. You could sail west easily but when you tried to go back east you wouldn't move anywhere!

Second: The Knot speed it shows in the lower `left-hand` screen is showing wind speed, not your speed. If it says 6 knots that mean the wind is blowing at 6 knots, not you ship(s).

yeah, sailing against the wind is not a problem at all. But still the game has it's drawbacks, sometimes to the point of a common sense violation. For instance, the quest system seems to be out of touch with the life simulation system. You sack the spanish town of Coro and appoint an english governor there. Then you start romancing his daughter, give her a ruby ring etc. And then they ask you to escort a new governor to Coro. So you do it. When he arrives, you think that the old governor is gone. But every time you visit, you still meet the daughter of the old governor and very oddly -- she apparently considers the new governor her father and he also is treating her like they are related. But they're not! He is NOT her father, he's just another mayor from some nearby town. Yet he keeps asking you to save his "daughter" from the captivity and finally you ask HIM "a very important question". Why should he care? I never played the original so may be it's nothing new, but it seems to me that things like this shouldn't happen in the game that is considered to be one of the all time greatest. And it's such an easy thing to discover, yet it's never mentioned in any of the reviews so I think v4pirate has a point here.
I'm also curious if `beta-testers` found it and let firaxis know about it.
This should be fixed, it's just as moronic as letting Raymondo escape all the time to track him down over and over again.

There are some things in this game that are not like they should be and Im not thinking only about bugs,and I think that we all can agre on that , but it is a REMAKE!!!!! and a damm good 1(IMHO) .I played this game on c64 and It wos my first love...........Now Im glad thet Iam starting to fall in love again <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/love.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":luv" border="0" alt="love.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" /> , <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/love.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":luv" border="0" alt="love.gif" />

Seabro - I don't remember it coming up during beta. But the version we had, all the governors looked the same etc.. so it's possible that the flakeyness happened (or became more noticeable) in a later version than we had.

Yeah, I think it would make sense that you get the cold shoulder from a recently sacked governor. And that the girlies should change when the governor changes. I also think that a daughter of any governor that you install, should invite you to the ball, no matter what your rank.. out of courtesy <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I have also noticed that if you sack a spanish town, install and english governor, the ship that arrives, bringing the "new" governor, is Spanish. That's a bug that I never noticed in beta either.

But, not big deals to me. Though I would like it to be fixed.

Aye, Seabro, although de game be lots o' fun, thar truly be some fairly noticeable an' curious inconsistencies indeed dat kin kinda distract ye whilst playin'! Escortin' new gov'nors be a good example! They ne'er seem tew acknowledge ye did anything, even if'n ye slows down an' let dem arrive befer ye! Since Fred Bob cain't tell if'n he benefits from escortin' new Guv'nors, he's taken tew capturin' an' plunderin thar ships! But whar be dis impordant man? Like a fool, every one o' dem seems tew git killed in action! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Wow, Toast, it be soundin' like ye were testin' a purty stripped down game! Are ye still able tew post bugs in thar database or dat be shut down now, ye be thinkin'? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Since V4Pirate mentioned the new Konami game I looked at it, after all, it IS about Pirates <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<a href="http://media.pc.ign.com/media/676/676995/img_2138271.html" target="_blank">http://media.pc.ign.com/media/676/676995/i...mg_2138271.html</a>

While viewing some of the screen shots that appear to be from the Beta test I saw one of the characters was named Catalina.. and I think the Catalina here was a Beta testers for Pirates also.. hmmm ... any conection?

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Since Fred Bob cain't tell if'n he benefits from escortin' new Guv'nors<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Whenever you escort a new governor the town you escort him to will increase by one profitability rating (thus increasing the financial reward of sacking them <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> )

Ive always found that if you go into any town after a governor makes it you receive part of your next promotion towards attracting the beautiful wenches <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

The "bug" mentioned about ships arriving with new governors. With a wee bit of imagination you can explain it away as a ship that had set sail would nay have a mobile phone, and once the course is set, its onward sail <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> Arriving in the now sacked town they would undoubtedly be put to work <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

Also happens with military ships, extra troops and the like, no matter the nation if they have already set their course, they cant change nowt <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

P.S in regards to daughters changing, it would become impossible to get a wife if she was never in the same place <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I actually really like the game which is why I have been so frustrated.

My biggest gripes are:

1) the "slow `non-linear` speed time zoom in zoom out sailing" bug thing even if it is intentional for careful manuevering as someone suggested. By the logic they should slow down the dances and fencing for careful manuevering too.

2) the limited choice of side quests: mr chatterly, find a family member, escort a governor immigrants or peace/war treaty, where should we attack, where should we send the plants, find a treasure. there I listed everything.

3) the 1 ship at a time slow battle. (What is the point of having a fleet??)
Huh? They have online realtime games with many more 3D objects moving much faster, excuse me who is doing the programming for Firaxis??

My problem is that good games come only when you incorporate the good things about other games that come before it, also needs to be carefully playtested before release. Blizzard knows this, Rockstar knows this, Firaxis knows this too, but Firaxis wants us all to buy the expansion pack. Very dissappointed in this lousy policy of releasing buggy stuff from Firaxis, Infogrammes, Atari, just look at the recent Civ, Railroad tycoon stuff from sid and the gang, same deal. their sales strategy is to build the engine with minimal content, and then sell the rest of the content as an additional expansion pack. A game of this stature should have been a DL DVD release instead we get miserly CDs worth of content, it's like getting floppy disk games back when the games should have had CDs worth of content.

As I said IMHO the strengths of this game is in the arcade stuff, dancing fencing and even the crippled ship battles. The rest of the rpg/strategy stuff storyline ...is on the level of those 'budget sim' titles.

I think it's better this way, I've nothing against paying a few extra goldcoins for the expansion pack. But this way we can choose if we want the simplified pure REMAKE of the original, or if we want it modernised with several new elements.

Yeah, sign me up for the expansion pack! Where do I `pre-order`? I'm a fanboy - I admit it.

I think the decision to have single pirate ship battles (even if you have a fleet) was probably made from a playability sake. Things might get too complicated if you had to handle an armada or something. And one thing Sid has always been good at is the "fun factor". His games are usually not overly complicated and have a tendancy to be very approachable for the novice player.

There is a connection, in a way, only it's not the way you might imagine. My nick is based on a `real-life` character, and so is the character in KOEI's game. I picked my nick before I ever played UWNH.

Read this and you'll see... <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.net/content/view/52/34/" target="_blank">http://www.piratesahoy.net/content/view/52/34/</a>

Regarding a SMP! expansion package from Firaxis, I haven't heard anything about it - that doesn't mean it won't happen, but so far NO ONE has peeped a word about it...

Catalina de Erauso is a `real-life` Spanish folk hero. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> I find it incredible that she got the Pope to grant her permission to wear trousers and live her life as a man... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />
