Disabling shouting voice when cannons fire

vaustein

Powder Monkey
Does anyone know the name of the audio file containing the "OOOAAAAAPPPP!" voice that bellows out whenever you fire the cannons? It's sort of obnoxious and it completely overwhelms other audio. I'd like to replace it with the Windows OS "chimes.wav" or maybe a fart sound.

go into the folder sounds under the folder resources in your gamefolder... there should be another folder there called objects and under that shipcharge...
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin that folder theres a couple of files called something like cannonreload-000 to 002 or something like that... just replace those...

you are going to seriously regret the fart sound when you have a manowar. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> or maybe loose every battle becuase you can't stop laughing. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

im actually thinking of replacing the cannon shot sounds...
if theres any serious interest for a mod like that i might release it, otherwise ill just fiddle with it on my spare time...

There are two sets of cannon sounds in the game now. There's a toggle in buildsettings.h called JRH_GUNSOUNDS I think. Give it a try.

But if you want to make some new ones, go for it. No one is going to complain!

Hook

yeah i know about the two sets of sounds... but i want the real guns setting on... but i still want more variation on the sounds themselves (if you listen to them in a row youll notice that its the same sound but in different "speeds"...)

The sound files are in RESOURCE\Sounds\OBJECTS\SHIPCHARGE, you can modify RESOURCE\INI\ALIASES\sound_alias.ini to change the cannon sounds and add more diverse ones. If you have a nice compilation finished, be sure to share it with us! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

my suggestion would be that the sound effect would be triggered when you press fire, not when the cannon itself fires.

I think the sound effects ARE played when the cannon fires. It chooses a random sound from the setting in sound_alias.ini for each cannon. But I think there are only a couple of sounds per cannon type; perhaps there is even just one sound per cannon type.

i know that the sound plays when the cannons fire, what i suggested is that it doesn't! i suggested, as i said before, that you hear it only once when you press space. your getting sleepy, pieter. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

every cannon caliber has it's own sound. those puny little four-pounders go off with a ploof or a pluf, while those big ones really make a low, big boom. medium cannons make a very distinctive bang-like noise, like fireworks, but with more 'air' in the sound, if you get my meaning. it sounds muffled.

well, im done with the cannons mod... im gonna release it on rapidshare for now, but if anyone has a better host for it just tell me (or just put it there yourself)

here it is: <a href="http://rapidshare.com/files/14630015/POTC_B13_Cannons.zip.html" target="_blank">my cannon soundmod</a>

EDIT: DO NOT DOWNLOAD THESE SOUNDS UNLESS YOU WANT TO BETA-TEST THEM!

it appears (at least on my computer) that they actually crash the game... i get a ctd when i fire the guns on my ship (and when the fort at oxbay fires... still havent been fired upon by enemy ships)

i have no clue as to why this happens... ill look into it (if anyone knows who made the new sounds for the game tell me his forumname so i can PM him with some questions)

and just to preempt some of the questions that might arise, yes the files are in the right format (PCM format, 44100 freq, 1 channels, 16 bits) and the only thing that sets them apart from the originals is the lenght and filesize (and sometimes only one of those)

ok... so i did some testing on my own (couldnt go to sleep) and changed the CR24C soundfile (since thats the gun i have on my ship right now) and made it play at half the speed, thereby doubling the filesize...
however, in the game, it still played at normal speed... and the game didnt crash either... very very strange...

ps. it seems ive played this game so much to day that the screen is actually bobbing right now... i need to go to bed before i get seasick <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

there's a problem that when there are no soundtracks to be played in a certain location, the game crashes. it doens't matter when you have the playing of a soundtrack programmed in but have already removed the file that should be played, but it does matter when you have programmed in that no file should be played at all. then the game crashes. this might be the case.

The game is very picky about the soundfiles it accepts. Sometimes you save a soundfile to the exact same settings as the original game's files and it still crashes the game. It's driven several people nuts so far and we still haven't figured out how to make soundfiles that the game does accept. Though we DO know it is possible somehow. Several people did manage it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Why shouldn't the cannon fire sound play when a cannon is fired? Seems the most realistic to me; I see no reason to change it.

well... do the ones that did manage to do it know why their sounds worked and not others? and did they have some sounds that failed and others that didnt?

It seems to have to do with the program used to save the files. Some programs work with the game, most don't. I don't really know which programs work.

well ive tried both DBPowerAMP and the normal windows recording thingy... neither work... however im gonna give it another try (check out what i mean in the "Game freezes in ransack screen..." thread)

naah... they still crash the game even tho i removed that memory file wich made the cannon sounds go muffled... thought that might have had something to do with it but i was wrong...

Removing the memory.mp file should improve the performance of the game and decrease the lag and delays. It won't influence the playing of sound files.

ok pieter, as you are obviously not understanding what i mean, here's an example:

now, the soundtrack plays when each gun is fired (i mean the gunman shouting). however, it would be more realistic to have him shout only once, when you press space to fire the guns. having i-don't-know-how-many gunmen on the ship is a bit unrealistic, and having one would remove the annoying sound you hear at the moment.

anyway, if the new method works as well, then that fine with me.

I always just hear it once. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
