I was wondering if the ship models, marine skins, and music pack downloads, on Peiters Pirate Site, were compatible with the Alpha build?

Also do you need more play testers for the Alpha version. I would gladly help playtest, but I was wondering how stable it acttually was. How many crashes and bugs do users experiance? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

Final Question: Can I download all of the music packs, to have all of the songs in my game, or will the songs all play at once and sound like nails on a chalkboard? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

Thanks!!!

the modders always make everything compatible to the newest builds(s), so don't worry about that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> also: i think that the skins are already there, you can get at least some of the navy skins for your crew in the buildsettings. have them myself. i think that the ship skins are already in the build too, except the ones you can see on the world map.

the music pack definatly works. to use one music pack you should just overwrite when asked, otherwise you'll hear nothing, or you'll hear the old music if you do something wrong. what you need to do is:

place the 'music' folder over the old.
put 'music-aliases' and 'piratesofthecaribbean-aliases' (names might be different, but they should be somewhat similar. remember: these are the files for the pirates of the caribbean music pack!) in resource\sound\music\aliases. (maybe the aliases folder is in the sound folder, but it has been a long time since i did this, so i'm not sure. if the aliases folder is in the sound folder, that's the one you need) just overwrite them.

you cannot use all the music packs at the same time. you can install them all, but you can only use one for the game. if you want a different one, replace the two files in aliases with the ones that come with the music pack. it's imprtant that you don't mix them up, otherwise it won't work. the songs themselves can simply all be put into the music folder. to better understand this, this is how it works:

all the music files go into the music folder. naturally, these are not used until they are opened by the files in aliases. the files in aliases are programmed in a way that when you are in a specific location, a random selection is chosen out of the files that are appointed for that location. what you basically could do, is program the file in a way that it chooses a music file from the different music packs, which is a pretty easy process. i strongly recommend not to do this however, because some people have experienced problems when they did this. with to much music, the game starts removing other lines of code currently active in the game, causing all kinds of bugs and crashes. the amount of music in a music pack is already very near the maximum amount of files, but i don't think it would matter to just have the music files in the music folder so you can use them if you want a different music pack. as long as the files aren't used by the aliases files that you have installed, there won't be a problem. as i said, to uset hose other music files, just install the different aliases files that come with the download.

we can always use more testers, and most of the bugs are out of build 14 alpha anyway, but you're of course always welcome. if you use build 14, remember to install the two updates for it as well. otherwise you will have the build, but with all the annoying game-killing bugs.

there! probably my longest sensible post yet!

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
The ship models are compatible with all game versions from the original unmodded game up until the Build 14 Alpha version. The same goes for the music downloads. The marine skins are 100% compatible with Build 13. When put on top of the Build 14 Alpha package, this will cause some new Build 14 skins to be removed from the tailor's shops. This is easily fixed by making some changed to initModels.c. I will make these changes myself some time later and put them up on my site, so you can use the mod with full Build 14 Alpha compatibility. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

There are some odd bugs, but I think it isn't all that bad. Also: If we can confirm parts of the Build 14 Alpha pack to be working properly, we can then add them into a stable Build 13 update. So that way we'd get new features in Build 13 without introducing new bugs into Build 13, because we already checked that they work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The music packs overwrite each other. It is possible to use all of them at once, but you need to edit music_alias.ini for that manually. Whatever you do, the tracks will never all play at once.

That is not entirely true. Some changes were made to the Build 13 update that make the officer skins not 100% compatible anymore. It is not a big problem and probably not something anyone would notice, but I will fix it soon anyway.

There already are navy skins in Build 13, but they're not the ones available as additional download. These are not in Build 13 by default.

The only ships available from my site are the world map ships. There are no additional downloads for other ships.

The original Build 14 Alpha package is not available anymore. If you download the Build 14 Alpha now, you'll immediately have the most up-to-date version.

apart from all those things that pieter corrected, i know what i'm talking about. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> however: i say it again, to many music files <u>will</u> cause problems! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! i heard this from a modder who knows about these things, so be careful. you can add a few soundtracks, but not many. if you experience problems or wierd bugs (that wheren't already there) remove a few soundtracks, and it will work again as before. i speak from experience and advice that was given to me.

oh, the file pieter mentioned was the one i meant. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> there is also a specific one in each modpack that you need to change as well. if you really want to have music from all the different musicpacks, then you should fish out the ones you like and put them in place of the original. warning: the file you replace must have the EXACT same name, otherwise it wont work.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
This happens when you have many different .ini files the aliases folder. The game loads ALL ini files in there, whether the game actually needs them or not. When it loads too many, some sounds may start disappearing. The solution is simple: If you make back-ups of the ini files there, DON'T put them in the same folder. Installing music packs on top of each other will cause no trouble and I don't think adding new tracks to existing music cases will cause trouble either.

that would explain those missing sounds...however, i've added only one soundtrack, but i have replaced two soundtracks by two very long ones. i think i'll just put them in two seperate folders, as you said. i am going to replace one music file with a shorter one, which i'm probably going to get from nelson, so the problem should be solved soon enough.

Thanks for the Info!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

I think I'll start with one music pack and then overwrite it if I need to.

I'm going to try the new music files out for a bit with build 13, and then download the Alpha and updates after the holidays to help with the playtesting. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

Btw: Has anyone ever considered adding the music from the Horatio Hornblower movies. I'll have to watch them again to hear all the music and see if it would sound right in the game. I'll also keep my ears open to see if any other songs could be put into a music pack. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

I liked that music in those films, but is it available anywhere WITHOUT sound effects? If so, I would very much like to have it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

remember: if you install a build, the music is changed backto the old music. i don't know why, just that it does. it seems like the download overwrites the file that plays the music. just remember to keep a backup file. this doesn't happen with build 14 alpha or any updates of that build. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

Apparently you do know why, because what you say is quite right. The Build overwrites the music_alias.ini file, so if you want to use the new music, you have to re-overwrite it with the custom music file.

seems like i keep making less sense since i joined this forum. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wacko:" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />
