Landlubber
Anyone else see the dramatised documentary on Edward Teach aka Blackbeard last night on BBC1? its was very good indeed, based on the factual logs and memoirs. I only just caught it in time and missed the first tem minutes, the second part is one next sunday. Well worth a look.

Wikipedia says it was released in the Netherlands in July...maybe ye have seen it then.

Yeah I seen it last night. A jolly affaire indeed.
Rather liked James Purefoy's attempte at a Bristol accent. Wasn't so sure I liked them portraying Israel Hands as something of a wet Blankett and Cowarde to boot. Wonder whether they have any evidence of that (apart from Hands turning King's Evidence against Gov. Eden and Thomas Knight).

Was glad to see they didn't slavishly follow Johnson either, with the fictitous attack on the Scarborough, and claims that Hornigold was present when La Concorde was taken. I do worry about the Outfits for Brand and Maynard though...look too much like a Uniform for my liking, at a time when Uniforms were still a long way from being adopt'd. The accompanying Book an't bad. Picked it up a while ago.

Curious casting of Antonia Campbell-Hughes, an Irish fashion designer as Louis Arrot...though she does look a lot younger than her mid-twenties age and a stick thin androgynous type.

Aye mate, nought like watching Blackbeard with a good dram in your belly. Proven to be a might useful in garnering a few ideas for dialog in me revisions of Malcolm Hatcher's files. A few bitter references to the authorities branding once privateers as pirates once their usefulness had passed, and borrowing Vane's dismissal of the amnesty and the opportunity to turn farmer.
But really...I watch it for the hats. Just for the hats.

I have this DVD. I frickin' LOVED it. There were some spots that will make you go to your local book collection (the uni's and some other things) but I liked it. I think Purefoy did an excellent job at the role.

Oh, and my DVD case isn't as cool as the one listed there. Mine is the pee yellow National Geographic cover. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

I have the National Geographic DVD version. It is fairly decent, but I was disappointed somewhat. James Purefoy did a middling job, but needs to work on his Bristol accent. And for a film titled "Terror at Sea", there wasn't much terror. I think the movie would have been much better if they'd actually included all the things Blackbeard did to cultivate everyone's fear of him.
For example, the time Blackbeard decided to see if he couldn't make a "hell on earth, and try how long we might stand it". Having himself and some of the crew sealed in the hold with burning sulfur, to see who would last the longest. Naturally Blackbeard himself lasted longer than anyone else, which pleased him to no end. That is one of the few stories actually known of him, why they didn't use it I don't understand. Would have made a great scene.
And they completely changed why Blackbeard shot Israel Hands in the knee.
It wasn't to "save his life" at all. Blackbeard, Hands and others were drinking in the ships cabin, when Blackbeard suddenly drew his pistols and put them under the table. All but Hands saw this, and quickly got up and left. Hands, being too drunk, didn't notice anything. Blackbeard then blew out the candle on the table and fired the pistols, striking Hands in the knee and crippling him for life. When asked why he did such a thing, Blackbeard replied: "If I didn't kill one of the crew now and then, they'd forget who I was!" Or in the final battle when Blackbeard was sliced in the neck by a cutlass, to the point he was literally holding his head on with one hand while continuing to fight. These are all scenes that should've made it into the film.
Oh well, it was at least a pirate film, and there are all too few of those...
