I'm thinking of working on a ship model but well... I have no idea where to start, I mean I know what I want to make and all but there is so many parts, I wouldn't know in which order to make or modify them. And how do you make the blasted rigging and sails? That's got me scratching my head. I know there is at least a few ship modelers still here, any advice? Thanks.

You will need to know 3d modeling (Maya 4.5 and the GM plugin), 2d graphics (Photoshop, etc.) and some coding. Unfortunately, most of it's gonna be trial-and-error, as there is no "here's how to build a new ship from scratch" guide.

Look here for a step-by-step semi-howto in building a ship from scratch (Bermuda Sloops)...

Thanks I appreciate the links, I must not have been to clear though. I know how to model and all, I use 3ds max. But I imported the black pearl just to see how they are set up. Kinda thought I'd reverse engineer it so that I'd be able to make my own from the ground up but there wasn't any sails or riggin included in the files. So that is the part thats got me confused. Does the game render these real-time? And if so how does it know the coordinates? I'm assuming thats the coding you mentioned? And my last question is if the hull and masts and cross sections and what not are seperate files, how does it reference them all together in game, and in the right positions on the ship? I just need a clue of any kind so I can shoot in the right direction. Thanks all.

Locators. Open a ship model in the GM Viewer and enable the "Show locators" and "Show labels" options at the bottom of the screen. The cannons have locators, the masts have locators, the ropes and sails have locators. They're basically just invisible points where these things are attached to. You can modify the locators with Inez Dias' tool.

Perfect, thanks Pieter. Thats all I needed to know. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />

Also, in POTC in general, ship models will have the locators for masts and some ropes

The ***mast#.gm models will have the locators for the spars (***rey#.gm)

The ***rey#.gm models will have the locators for sails and ropes.

I mentioned <a href="http://www.burningsea.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6828" target="_blank">these</a> articles before in "publicity - thats what we need" but nobody seems to have noticed them, at least nobody have commentede on them. I am not a modeller and can´t use the programs for making ships, but check it out just in case.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I suppose I should take this opportunity to ask before I start, has anyone made the HMS Interceptor yet? I found out the sail and rigging layout for the Lady Washington, the ship used as the Interceptor for the film and will get started asap. Later.

I know somebody was working on her, but I don't know how far he got. He's been having trouble getting the ship ingame from Maya and needs some help, but apparently nobody can actually help him. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

what if you retexture a brig as a start? it's just that it needs a quarterdeck. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

We can temporarily use a black-and-yellow brig as Interceptor in the game. We've already got at least one of those.

Foun <a href="http://www.worldwideflood.com/CAD/start.htm" target="_blank">this</a> tutorial, also. Its for AutoCad but the issues should be general disregarding what program you use...

Think Maya 4.5 is an annoying tool to work with, as far as I can read everywhere they talk hull molding?

Would Maya 7 tutorials be of any interest? I can also get my little dirty fingers into a copy of a pirate-ship modeling and a texturing tut...but they´re 817 mb each! Also, a tut on Maya character setup, but loads only 4.17 mb however.

Also, some e-books:
1) Dancing Comicbook
2) Character Animation
3) Creating a Dragon
4) Creating the Logo from the Matrix
5) Using Maya: Hypergraphs, Sets and Expressions
6) Maya Fundamentals
7) Creating a Grass Logo
