Edited: "The Hand of God" Ability??

Alright i joined a battle between the British and the Dutch. The dutch manowar and the british manowar were side by side duking it out, so I pull behind the dutch manowar turn so im perpendicular and start firing grapes. I eventually board and fight through and capture the ship. I assign one of my officers to the ship. He has a 10 in every category, is around level 60, but has no abilities assigned. I forgot that I had not assigned any abilities to officer, and i wanted to `quick-repair` the Manowar, so I hit "give order" chose the manowar and then hit "use ability" low and behold there is a strange icon ive never seen before. It looks like a black ship with light emenating from it, it had some sort of symbol on its its sail, kinda looked like a jackolantern, also below the ship there was a curved lightning bolt, almost like the kind of lightning bolt on a frosted flakes box... Its not any ability that any officers has, or that this officer has, and ive never seen it before, what is it?
 
That's the "Fire Ship" ability; if you order one of your ships to become a fire ship, and if both your character and the officer assigned to the ship have this ability, the ship will seek out an enemy ship and blow up near it, and heavily damage and maybe even sink it.

I'm pretty certain that you lose the officer that you assign to a fire ship, and you certianly lose the ship. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Various people have determined that this is the only good purpose for a Tartana. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />
 
It wasnt fireship because I know what the fireship icon looks like and it wasnt that one. I dun think. This ship in the icon wasnt on fire the same way or anything.

Edit:

Alright heres a more accurate description of the icon. Its a black ship, with a `purple-ish` glowing outline, and what appears to be an orange skull on the sails.

I have determined that this ability can only be used at night. I fought a pirate frigate and corvette, I capture the corvette and assigned a captain to it. I gave it the order to use this strange ability and he started sailing towards the pirate frigate. I wanted to get a good view for the event so I hit tab to go into first person mode, and while I was about to walk onto the `aft-castle` (proper term?) to get a good look, I heard a strang explosion. Kinda sounded like lightning I think... anyways on the screen it said "The frigate pheocian was destroyed by the hand of god" "The corvette suprise was not destroyed by the hand of god"
the wierd thing is tho, the suprise did sink....
does anywone know anything else about this?
 
Wow sounds very funky indeed! Maradonna up to his old tricks sinking ships rather than English footballing glory eh. Is this in the vanilla POTC or the build?
 
I just took a random pass through the textures to see if there was something there I didn't recognize - short of unpacking all of the textures, I can't figure out if this icon is anywhere...

Hope you can get us a screenshot, Nigel!

Here is the symbol Nigel is talking about, (I know it doesn't match the "abilities" symbol for fireship, but I still maintain that that is what it is. I am waiting for someone to make it an option for your ship's sails.):

and here is an encounter where a captured brig is sent to "fireship" a pirate corvette, and manages to also take out one of the `tarta-bannas` I brought along to use as a fireship. (Notice my lovely frigate is missing her mainmast, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" /> lucky shot!)

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, I put it to you, is this not the fireship ability, indeed? I am under the impression that you get the "Hand of God" message as a default whenever a ship sinks and it can't be determined that a particular ship or fort gun brought it down. Sometimes damaged ships sink when their cumulative damage pulls them down, and if no one is shooting at them you get the default message.

Aye sorry for not being here for awhile it was the end of the jewish holiday sukkot and that lead straight into the sabbath. Anyways, yeah thats the icon and the messages I get. So are you saying it "is" fireship or "is not" fireship? Also does anyone know why it couldnt be found in any of the ability textures?
Why it is only available sometimes and whatever?

The only time I haven't been able to make it work is if I have a "Quest Officer" like Artois or Danielle or Clair LaRousse assigned to a ship and I try to give them the order. As long as the officer has the fireship ability they usually seem willing to follow my orders to go and blow themselves up. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Honestly, I've never had occasion to use it - and haven't found it in the textures... BUT it's a very cool icon! I'd want that orange skull for my sails as long as it also came with that purple glow. Addendum: Sir Chris, you're indeed correct that "Hand of God" is the default.
