Elite and its successors

A pirate's life it is for me...

Kieron: It's called Independence War 2 (and IIRC Epic mod if it ever gets done will make it much more `Frontier-ish`). That, or X2 is supposed to do that too.
Whatever happened to Elite 3 anyway?

The freeform mod for `I-War2` has been out a while, but `I-War2` still makes you travel down the main quest route if you want to upgrade, the sameway that DA's Freelancer does. The nearest to free form pirate play is `X2-The` Threat. There is an expansion planned for X2, I think it'll be out for Xmas, although I'm not 100% sure on that. The only problem with the `X-Universe` series of games, is that it's more trade focused than combat. Combat is there, but it's a tadge on the dull side. It's the economy system that sells X2 (Unfortunately I lean more towards the combat side of it, as opposed to the bean counting side).

David Braben creator of the original Elite, the one for the BBC model B microcomputer, that came on Tape then `re-released` on Floppy disk with extra content (Lol I remember playing this back in 1982, it doesn't seem that long ago in my head) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> is on target for the release of Elite 4, there has even been adverts in PC magazines saying that it's in production. So this time it seems more than just a rumour.

Elite 3 was called "Elite: First Encounters" and apparently was crap and was even more bug riddled then POTC was. I've still got the first two Elites around somewhere.

The good news is that one of the original programmers for Elite, David Braben, is planning on eventually making an Elite 4 that may be multiplayer. This will be a long way off but here's a link to a very recent interview with him:

Since I actually have FFE on my _drive_ at the moment, that's a really stupid error. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
Good to hear that's still on the way.

Sorry for threadjacking btw...should take this to other games (sooper dooper mod powers, ENGAGE!)

Taken.

Hmm. I should try X2 then. IW2, I'm referring to the Epic mod that, um, GrandpaTrout, Shane, Hot4Darmat, and some others whom I do not at this moment recall, were working on, at SoupDragon's site (iwar2.net?), not the freeform mod that PS released. It was adding a whole new sector of space, new empires and stories, a dynamic world/relation/trade/war model, all the works.

X2 is great but the story was a bit on the short side, lots of cool features and very pretty. The galaxy seems a bit lifeless though.. maybe the addon will address this. Right now I think I preffer Freelancer, there are allot of really good mods and multiplay to boot.

I wasnt a big fan of freelancer, i played it through but the whole trading thing that made elite fun i found to be quite boring, plus there seemed to be pirates everywhere in the solarsystem, i stopped following it though a bit after, so i havnt seen any of the mods, I might have to check in soon on it again <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

((I've been playing on a multiplayer Freelancer mod server off and on for a long time; it's great fun.

I'm not a huge `sci-fi` fanatic, though, so my interest in the game comes and goes from time to time. And it does tend to draw a... younger demographic than the people I'd usually prefer to be gaming with. Still, very cool though.))

Check out what the Lancers are doing, there are some great mods:
