Engine.exe crash, graphics card?

Hi all,

Please can one of you clever chaps help me:

I have a Pentium 2.5 with 512 Ram but a NVIDIA 64MB GeForce4 MX 440 graphics card. When I try to play AOP I get as far as a black screen with a pirate wheel spinning in the bottom right corner before it crashes with the Engine.exe message.

Is it because my graphics card is out dated that I can't play the game?

Any help would be grately appreciated!

Thank you

Sure is, and your ram is not very exciting either!
.....wish, I had better news! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Curses!

Thanks for your reply. Just bought a cheap NVIDIA 128mb card off Ebay, should be ok when thats in I hope!

Thanks again

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" /> That should help! I use a ATI Radeon 9800 series 128mb,
did not pay much for it, and it works well. The 512 mb ram does seem a bit stingy,
but should work. Just make sure you don't run any programs in the Background,
like Antyvirus etc. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

512MB ram! i never even had that much! i have always worked with 258 (or something like that), and it has always worked for me.

this clearly does not meet the minimum requirements as printed on the game box.

that's definatly a reason to stick to PotC. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" /> You poor Pirate! If you run WinXP on your computer 258 mb is the bare minimum
and does'nt leave anything for other applications! You should be ok if running Win98/ME.
Are there still people doing that? Sounds like stoneage to me. Most modern games want
and demand a lot more than that! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Oh yes,

be warned that a new video card may draw more power than your Power Supply can provide.

You may be looking at upgrading your PS
especially if it is under 250 watts.
(or 400 watts if you get one of the better cards)

Heck this machine came with a 150 watt PS. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />
Barely able to drive my MX 440.
(I play on a different machine)

that would certainly explain the overheating. i have a pretty ancient video card, but i think that it's still too much for my 125 watt ( <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> ) power supply. the overheating is now solved by leaving the outer casing for my computer off. i definatly need a new computer.

Hi guys,

I am planning to put the new video card in today. I am upgrading from a NVIDIA 64MB 440 MX to a NVIDIA 128 MB 5200 card. The PC is a Pentium 4 2.5 but I'm at work and can't chech the motherboard type. Please can someone tell me how I find out the wattage of my PS? Since I'm not upgrading to a super fast graphics card, do you think I will have a problem with over heating or something like this? I deliberately didn't upgrade to a very powerful card incase that caused problems.

Thanks for your help

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" /> You should be ok! Your running a Pentium4, that's all I have and no problemo!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

just in case you are still curious, the power supply is (with my computer) at the back, in the top. with me, the wattage was on the bottom of it.

5200 FX card doesn't require too much power, 350 watt power supply should be adequate, 6600 an up requires a more Horse Power <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Just to conclude the thread, put the 128mb card in and all works fine! Thanks for all your help guys!

Time to set sail ...

so...if i want a new video card i'd better buy an entire new computer, right? it certainly looks like it.

Yep, Morgan it sounds like its time for you to spend some O' yer booty for a new box mate, Maybe check around your local PC shops for deals on PC components, buy piece by piece and build it yourself or pay a PC shop to put it together for you if you don't know how, its what I did an saved a bundle O' loot and have a better PC than ye can buy in the shops <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> They almost always stick in some piece of crap video card and power supply unless you pay bigger bucks for a gameing PC <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
