Fantastic game but have some questions

1. The game retired me in my first game at the age of 49 but what determines when you retire? Is it simply a random thing based on age or does it depend on the number of times you get hit with the sword.

2. If the game is dependent upon the number of times you get hit with the sword, isn't it better to play on a lower level like adventurer rather than swashbuckler as although you get a smaller cut, you will more than make up for it in with longevity?

3. Which skill do you find best to choose. I initially thought medicine because I will live longer and have longer to plunder etc but now am thinking navigation because sailing against the wind is so painful and takes so long (but yes I do know about zig zagging to help this).

Thanks.

I think it depends on the number of your hits, and some randon effects. You can reduce the aging with some items you can find and the medcine skill.

You will still age, and playing on a lowel level will become boring

Still fencing.

The # 1 thing that determines when you retire is your Health. Now there are a couple of things that affect your health.

1. Age

2. Number of times wounded in battle

A few things will help preserve/prevent damage to your health.

1. What skill you choose at the start, this one is touchy since obviously medicine will help you live longer, but what good is it if you get hit all the time in duels. Fencing might be a better choice..

2. Medicinal items you may or may not have.

3. Special swords that improve your fencing skill.

4. Pistols

5. Armor

In addition you may want to get a Surgeon on board your ship. `PG-110`(NOTE: it is not clear to me if the surgeon has any effect on your character. I am inclined to think not as the manual states only, "crewman")

These "special items" are detailed on pages `113-116` of the U.S. english version of the manual.

Or you could just retire from the start. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />
