Few minor modifications/additions/`bug-fixes` for PotC

Pieter Boelen

Hello guys,

I've been busy making some small modifications to PotC, trying to improve it just a little bit more. Of course, what I did is nothing compared to what certain other people did, but I hope my small contribution will be appreciated too. You can find a file containing some modifications (some by me, but defenitly not all) <a href="http://millenniumdock.bravepages.com/storage/others/PotCMods.zip" target="_blank">here</a>.

<i>The file contains the following modifications:</i>
[<span style='color:red'>Please note:</span>
- Automatic showing of the name of the character you're facing (can't remember who modded this, Nathan Kell added the ability to toggle it on/off in BuildSettings.h, I didn't do anything about this)
- Improved Captain Jack Sparrow skin (by Kodo Boon)
- Build 11 Dutch sails added so they can be selected as pirate sails. This doesn't work for red whole and torn sails, nor for white torn sails (thanks for Nathan Kell for sending me the old files)
<i>Following minor modifications ARE done by me, unlike the previous ones:</i>
- Changed dialog for the French governor Joseph Claude le Moigne, so that it is clear which dialog options are English warship quest related and which ones are random pirate related. This should get rid of the confusion. Some other, even more minor things were changed too.
- Changed dialog for the Redmond portmaster Laurence Wellman, so that he knows Rys's last name to be Bloom, instead of naming him Bloom, Blum and Boon. Again to save confusion.
- Changed dialog for Rys Bloom, so that it's clear that when you say "Really, it's a big sum...", you do not hire him.
- Toff Oremans gives you an excellent Saber of Nicholas Sharp instead of an avarage one for rescuing his daughter from the pirate. This because in the stock game, this used to be a very special gift, but since in Build 11/12 Sabers of Nicholas Sharp are rather common (quite weird actually; I suppose there was just one Nicholas Sharp) and it isn't a special gift at all anymore. Hope to have changed that.
- Dutch first rank named "2e Luitenant" instead of "Luitenant 2e", because that is how the real Dutch rank would be.

Obviously, my mods are really minor indeed, but I hope it will add to the game anyway, if even just a little bit.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> nice!

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Ah, that's wonderful, Pieter! Thank you! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

It's not how important a mod is, we're all contributing little tweaks here and there - yours are most welcome! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Although I always thought the harbormaster butchering Bloom's name was because Bloom was simply too insignificant for him to take notice of...

Good idea to change that sword from Toff! That's always bothered me, since the weapons mod was implemented.

It does also seem odd that there are so MANY Nicolas Sharpe sabers around... Did you tweak the settings so that they are more uncommon than common? Maybe they should be extremely RARE... Although I suppose Cortez's sword and the Cardinal's Guard sword should also be pretty rare... I guess they are, it just depends upon your level in the game...

Which reminds me, I haven't played - just played - in a while. I might just start up a new game... (and practice some work avoidance, LOL!)

Again, great job! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Thanks Modder Pirate and Catalina,

Maybe some day, I'll try to do some more complicated mods. Might I ever get into `more-or`-less serious modding, I'd like to model a new ship into the game (the Amsterdam, see my Praise, comments, questions and suggestions thread) and make a quest out of it.

You're right about Bloom being insignificant. He really isn't an impressive guy, is he? Of course, if you want the portmaster to keep messing his name up, you can just reset the old dialog file. I didn't change anything else anyway. I just thought that calling him Boon might be a bit too confusing since that French guy's also called Boon. And Blum is pronounced like Bloom anyway.

Nope: Didn't tweak any settings to change the rarity. Would it be a good idea to make sure nobody sells it and nobody walks around with one, just like in the stock game? And if so: how might I manage that? And when we'd be fiddling with that, maybe we could increase the stats a bit to make it a really good sword instead of rather a mediocre one, so you can keep using it into the end of the game, if you like.

BTW: If you are going to play the game again, be sure to check out a little possible bug with your Fred Bob quest: When I met Estrella and received the quest to look for Armand, I could talk with her again right after we finished talking and I could skip visiting Armand. Weird.

BTW 2: I was thinking of adding the default dialog options for `tavern-hired` officers to the `quest-hired` ones. And maybe add some extra girlfriend/wife dialog to Danielle Greene after completeing the main quest. Would that be possible and if so, how?
Edit: And how might I add boarding crew model settings to BuildSettings.h?
Again: Thanks for everything! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Also: The SailTo function still hasn't been fixed, while it is now apparent that I am not the only one with the problem and JMV's skinpack also doesn't work properly yet. Please help me guys. I am wanting to try and fix it, but with my minimal amount of knowledge, I really need your help!

Would that be possible and if so, how?
I deliberately left that open - so that another modder (or myself) might build off of it (i.e., another quest). So go ahead, if you wish - I don't mind at all! To edit that, you need to play both with the dialog.c files AND quests_reaction.c - it takes a bit of work to get used to. Take a look at the PotC Wiki tutorials/Code Help for tips and tricks...

<!--`QuoteBegin-Pieter` Boelen+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pieter Boelen)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Edit: And how might I add boarding crew model settings to BuildSettings.h?
Ah, I'd have to look that up... Ahhh, Pieter, you've got the bug, now... There's no cure for this!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I updated my <a href="http://millenniumdock.bravepages.com/storage/others/PotCMods.zip" target="_blank">PotCMods.zip</a> file to change it into a `sort-of` cumulative update for Build 12, adding everything I managed to properly add to the game that wasn't yet in it with the Build 12 installation. Maybe Catalina or somebody else can use this file as a basis for a real Build 12 update.

Anyway, the following things were included:
- Everything that was originally in the file (as stated in my first post in this thread)
- Alan Smithee's blacksmith mod (+ I fixed the bug where you couldn't get into Falaise de Fleurs through Octopus Bay anymore)
- Alan Smithee's brace of pistols mod (but I haven't tested that myself yet)
- Alan Smithee's Captain Hook skin (now buyable from the QC tailor - seems to work fine)
- Catalina's new characters
- Petros's greybeard skin
- Petros's lady portraits (+ the skins are now buyable from the countries he suggested)
<span style='color:red'>Please note:</span> Most of these will only work in a new game.

This file seems to work fine when extracting it straight on top of a clean Build 12 installation. Hope nobody minds that I have done this; if so, I'll get it off again as soon as I can.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Funny, I was just working on the same compilation, but hadn't gotten that far yet. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

The Blacksmith mod is the only thing that should make you have to start a new game... I was wondering if we should hold it out until we actually make a "Build 13", or if we should just go for it and tell everyone they have to start a new game... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I'd say just add it. Everyone starting a new game will have the great new option and everyone not starting a new game will still have the Douwesen blacksmith. Looks like an `all-win` position to me. Anyway: I can't imagine it would hurt in any way to add the new blacksmith mod, right? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

That was my first inclination, Pieter... Just wanted to see where everyone else was on this thought. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

It'd be great to see it added, especially since I missed the deadline for the B12 initial release, but there're a few small tweaks, fixes and improvements I need to make on it.

Thanks for fixing/including my new stuff, Pieter; you're even a step ahead of me, with integrating cap'n hook into the tailors mod. If you didn't update the little cannon model in the blacksmith shops yet, with the new "stable" one from Inez, I'll make that part of my next fix.

With the testing of CCC's SWAK/Stormy Start mod yet to be done, we can be patient for your tweaks, Alan. Might as well get these all in one download... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

With your permission, (and when I find some time) I wouldn't mind working on your Blacksmith skins to see if I could get them looking a little better... Do you mind? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-alan_smithee`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(alan_smithee)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Thanks for fixing/including my new stuff, Pieter; you're even a step ahead of me, with integrating cap'n hook into the tailors mod. I did try replacing the little cannon model, but the version I got from Inez's `zip-file` was a bit smaller in actual size (not filesize) than the version used in your blacksmith, so I kept the old one until you'd fix it.
I don't know if you're happy with the text for the Capt'n Hook skin. It now says "Do you know that captain James Hook character from the 2003 Peter Pan movie?" I'm sure a better text could be thought of.

<!--`QuoteBegin-CatalinaThePirate`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(CatalinaThePirate)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->...CCC's SWAK/Stormy Start mod...
What's that? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Don't mind at all, and I'm glad you offered. I made those skins months ago, when I was still a filthy n00b to hardcore graphics editing; some of my first attempts. I like to think I've gotten better since...

I forget, did I have character portraits for the 'smiths in that download? I've made them, and I'm pretty sure I haven't yet integrated them into facemaker or tailorsmod... But would anyone really wanna cruise the caribbean as a sweaty sooty blacksmith, I wonder?

<b>Pieter Boelen, </b>CCC just sent some of us a new mod with new weapons - the ones he mentioned here - <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net/ftopic3802.php" target="_blank">http://forum.piratesahoy.net/ftopic3802.php</a> - we're testing it now (if I can ever get off of the web, LOL!) but it will be available for download soon, and will be included in the package of upgrades to B12. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<b>alan_smithee, </b>I'd say don't worry about the portraits for facemaker/tailorsmod - that's only if you want these smiths for your personal skin or for an officer.

I'll see what I can do with some of the smith skins later on today, hopefully. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Ahh, work avoidance, with practice, can be a beautiful thing! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I found an error hailing back to build 10 or so, with vigila mendez' dialog... I didn't have a high enough rep when I spoke with him, so the dialog file referred me to a link to "node_exit," a case not to be found anywhere in the dialog. You fix it, I assume, by just making it link to the "exit" case... I couldn't guess why a "node_exit" case would be needed, unless it's important for the condition that he won't speak to you till you get your rep up.

---

Also: I made a little icon for the gunboat, so it doesn't have to use the same one as the little tartane, but I couldn't get it to work. I made a reference to it in "pictures.ini", but the interface still shows the tartane. Even when i delete the original reference to the image in the code.

If anyone thinks they could get it to work, I have the file. It's just a single 128x128 image.

Heh, I found messing with the blacksmith skins a bit more involved than I expected, simply because I thought I'd try to make the girl look like the female blacksmith in "A Knights Tale" - Laura Fraser. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I see... when I made her she was just Jeniffer Connely's face all dirtied up, no character in mind.

----

This is my image for the gunboat icon... I had no luck getting it to work `in-game`.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/gunboat.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Ah, I thought she looked familiar! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Gunboat image looks good. I wonder why it won't work!

Where is NathanKell when you need him? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> He would know more about the ship interfaces, I think. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

i think we should combine A&M `add-on` with build mod. And we get A&MBuild <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />
