Firing cannons in 1st person view

Hey Forum, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

i have a question:

Is it possible to mod some files, so that i can fire the cannons in the 1st person view as in the 3rd person without aiming ?

As of right now, as far as I understand, in Build 13 that's the default way of firing. To fire manually in 1st person view press "V".

Kazeite is correct. The mod you ask for is part of the Build 13 Beta version. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I can´t even imagine to play game without manual aiming in the first person style. With automatic aiming all game would lost any meaning for me. I wonder why modders ever complicated situation with adding V for manual aiming because I think there shouldn´t be any other alternative in game than manual aiming. And I think people who stayed devoted PoTC and like this game very much would never use automatic aminig. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

If you don't want to use automatic aiming don't use it. It's very simple.

Some people want to be able to fire the same way in first person as in third, so I added that ability. Now you don't have to go to third person view every time you want to fire your cannons.

We can't eliminate manual aiming, because sometimes you have to fire at something that isn't considered a target by the game (neutral ship, for example) or to aim higher to hit sails.

Part of the reason I added automatic aiming for first person was so that I could use a voice command program to give all commands in first person by speaking them into a microphone, never having to touch the keyboard.

The automatic helps in various times as well. Like when I am between three ships and all volleys can go at once, its nice to be able to just shout "FIRE AT WILL!" and all volleys unload. Usually though I use manual, as I am trying to harm a ships sails, or rake their crew without damaging my prize.

Having the ability to do either in 1stPerson without having to quit the game to go f**k with some BS.h setting is a good thing.

And like Hook said, you dont like automatic, then dont use it?!

I set my manual aiming to right mouse buttong, and scope is on left mouse button... that way I am already aiming with the mouse, then just *click* and I fire where I am looking.

Honestly, the default settings of keys is abominable.

Sory, I couldn´t imagine that any of PoTC fan could use automatic aiming. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I use automatic aiming all the time. I hardly ever do manual aiming myself. You can set everything back to normal by setting AUTO_AIMED_FIRE to 0 in BuildSettings.h. Then set controls back to default and press to reinitialize. After that, everything works exactly how it always worked again. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

So, maybe you could try manual aiming. For me this is just the thing that entertain me the most of all. I think the manual aiming asks for practise and some craft. Once I recommended PoTC to my friend and after some time of playing he told me he is bored by this game already because he only pushes the button and his ship shoot at enemy. He didn´t know that manual aiming ever exists.....

And this is probably reason Pieter that we touched previously about ranges of cannons. When I constantly use the manual aiming the max distant of my cannons with manual aiming is about 600 yards because uf low elevation and other parameters. And I increased this elevation as much as possible already. I will have to do some further correction in program for myself yet. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Yeah right. The ability to aim automatically is a very recent addition to the game. And this is the first sailing game I've ever seen where you even *could* aim manually. In fact, the game used to *force* you to aim manualy. What a pain in the butt.

We're not saying we never use manual aiming, just that for most purposes it's totally unnecessary and a needless aggravation. We don't need to *try it*, we were forced to do it before my mod.

Anyway: The way it is now, you can fire manually if you want to AND can fire automatically if you want to. Everybody gets it the way he wants, right?

Hook, you probably didn´t play Sea Dogs. The aiming is manual here too and we always used it. So, for that reason I was a little surprised by your using automatic aiming. By the way if you never play Sea Dogs I would recommended to play it. I think you would be pleasantly surprised by this game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Yes Pieter, I am for it. Let´s anybody choose what likes. In that lies the beauty of this game and democracy in decission making. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

I'm aware that Sea Dogs existed, and if it were that good we'd be moddig it instead. If I want to go back to that kind of game, I'll play the base PotC.

Perhaps you don't understand the concept of voice command. You have a microphone, and you speak the commands into it instead of typing on the keyboard. "Make all sail... turn starboard... steady as she goes... fire cannons." Try that while having to manually aim your guns.

The captain doesn't aim the guns. He specifies the target, and whether to fire high or low. The gun captains handle all the aiming. If you want the feeling of being a real captain, you won't be aiming your cannons. That's what I was trying to capture.

Now, since it's a game, and since the game doesn't have the ability to specifiy autoaiming high or low, you have to be able to aim manually sometimes. I've solved part of that problem by making chainshot fire higher than in the normal game. That's not part of the current build, but may be in the next one.

And since it's *MY* game, no one is going to tell me how to play, or how I *ought* to be playing. "I didn't pay $50 to be aggravated." You want to manually aim every shot, go for it. That ability was never removed. But don't even think about judging my playing style. I paid my dues over 30 years ago and I'm currently putting in over 12 hours a day, every day, on making this game better. Play any way you like, but don't think that your style of play is the only proper one.

This discussion is heading in a sort-of not-so-nice direction. Shall we discontinue this discussion? The way it is currently, everybody should be able to have it work the way he wants, so there should be no reason for complaining, right?

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> ...and double cheers to you Hook!!!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> I for one like it just the way it is, it gives the maximum amount of options to the player, which is what most people want anyway. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hook, you should tame your ego. You said PoTC is the first game you have seen with manual aiming but there is manual aiming in Sea Dogs too. It´s a fact. And I never tell anybody how to play one´s game. I only told I am surprised. Nothing more. I even didn´t mean you Hook concretely in this case but you as a plural because I know now that more people use this automatic aiming. You shouldn´t see anything wrong in that and you shouldn´t say I am trying to tell you how to play your game because it isn´t true. And you shouldn´t use such an invading tone. And I am using commands menu too. By the way Sea Dogs is very extensively modified but modding is more difficult than in PoTC because it has different and not so friendly code as PoTC has. You could ask Couch Captain Charles about it if you would like <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Can this discussion please be stopped now? I think it has served it's purpose. If I see any more posts that are not-so-nice, I will close this thread. But I don't want to. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

Let me just say that sometimes, like when I'm more involved in steering the ship, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> I use auto aiming.

Other times, I need to aim at a particular ship in a group and use manual aiming <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> .

But right now I have <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> such poor cannon accuracy skills <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> that it really doesn't matter <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> I miss either way.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />

I've done a little work on that one too. After watching my character with accuracy 6 missing wildly enough times I put in an additional calculation to use a normalized random number as well as the original calculation. You'll still get wild misses once in a while, but sometimes the aiming will be somewhat more accurate, with more shots hitting toward the center of your aim than way off to one side.

I also added a slight increase to the minimum radius the game uses to calculate the hit point so that at accuracy 10 you won't be putting your entire broadside into a one foot circle on the enemy ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I've tested these in a lot of sea battles, both myself against an enemy ship and watching fleet actions between two opposing forces, and it's looking pretty good.

You'll still need to do manual aiming if you want to target the enemy ship's sails with roundshot. And of course you can fire manually on every shot if you prefer.

Edit: note that the effect is subtle and if I hadn't mentioned it you'd probably never notice it. You'd just be slightly less frustrated. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
